Oh. It's already started.
Last week, my buddy walked in to a convenience store at the corner of the block on which he lives.
On the way out, he held the door open for a group of 4-5 young (early 20s) men in front of him.
As he walked out behind them (having held the door open for them, mind you) the last one in line in front of him turned around and said, "You got a problem?"
He responded, somewhat confused by the nonsensical response to having a door held open for you, "nah man. get out of here with that! i got no problem." ... he continued to walk back across the lot to his truck. He did say he turned around at one point, because he heard foot steps, and noticed one of the group following him, but he just assumed they were going to their own vehicle.
Instead, as soon as he closed the door to his truck, and was buckling his seat belt, he noticed his door was opening again. Next thing he "knew", he felt jarred, and temporarily dazed ... the shrimpiest of the four kids had opened his door and sucker-punched him in the left side of his face. ... then ran back to his group 15 feet away.
My buddy pulled his truck up, and said, "hey man. what the fuck was that? That's the most racist shit i've seen in my life. You just fucking punched me in the face for no reason. What the fuck?"
The response was, "You best get on out of here with that mess. You best go on, before it goes down."
???
The cops arrived after he called them, and LITERALLY told him, "you have no business shopping at that store. You should really NOT go back there again."
???
I have no doubt in my mind that this was racially motivated, and my friend was targeted simply for being a young, fit, white boy, in the "wrong place" ... and i'd bet dollars to donuts it was at least subconsciously motivated by the perceived injustice of the TM killing.
:(
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

That is unfortunate and very sad but do you think TM case will be the untimate trigger to a percieved future race riot? i can't believe the police didn't investigate the matter further what was that all about? I would want to know why they weren't checking out what happened.

oh. i mean, who can know for certain.
but i'm betting PSYCHOLOGICALLY speaking, this was a latent factor.
Unless you think that random beatings for no apparent reason are just something that are done for shits-and-giggles on their own, and you think that my buddy had just as much of a chance at a completely-random and non-instigated punch in the face as the next black man to have walked out the door.
From the setup it seemed like he was being "baited" with the smallest (by a WIDE margin) of the 4 ... and that the hope was he would "go off" and then get "beat down" by the rest of the group (two of the members of which were over twice his weight).
again, who can know if TM was directly or indirectly related. That was just my personal hunch \ assumption.

I am ASSUMING that the punch was racially motivated (they were black, he is white) ...
just as the entire offended black community is ASSUMING that the TM killing was
a. racially motivated in and of itselft
b. the police response\non-response was racially motivated.
I'm not sure i really see the difference. except one was a punch, and one was a sadly-tragic killing.

you don't think that sort of things happens?
I seriously doubt this was a case of a bunch of kids just looking for someone, anyone to punch.
But ya'll are more than welcome to go ahead and flip this around and assume that *I* am the latent racist, making racist assumptions. if that is how you want to swing this story.

i was jsut saying i doubt TM played a role. if you don't want to believe this shit doesn't happen, go right ahead.
Random acts of violence happen every single day. White on black, black on white, white on white, black on black. I don't think you can take one example and equate it to an impending race war.
Also, some of us don't believe the Martin shooting was racially motivated. We believe the lack of arrest for two months was racially motivated. If Martin would have followed and killed Zimmerman we believe he would have been arrested much sooner.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

i think this is part of the problem ... so many people want to not believe there are racial tensions in the US ... and want to chalk it up to isolated incidents ... when the reality is that the signs are evident of racial tension ... and it goes every which way ... white on black, black on white, latino and black, white and latino, etc ...
people are in denial to me ...
this is the question one has to ask ... if drifting's friend was black - would he have been assaulted? ... if trayvon martin was white and zimmerman black - would the black zimmerman been sent free and no charges laid?
As I mentioned we now are a watch neighborhood ... color doesn't enter the equation
someone prowling the neighborhood that doesn't belong here does.
Zimmerman was doing his job following Trayvon while staying on the phone with police.
Personally I think Zimmerman feared for his life, mistakenly assuming Trayvon had a weapon
and was much older.
I spoke with our watch captain who had a similar episode and he said his heart was in his throat
until police arrived. He just didn't know how desperate the person might be.

I do not think he was doing his job. And neighborhood watch programs are instructed by police to not follow people and never carry a weapon. If you take into account the mans past and his over zealous attitude of calling police about nothing dozens and dozens of times, the condescending things he mutters on the phone to the dispatchers about treyvon (ie -- "they always get away...he looks like hes on drugs or something... somethings wrong with him..")
Is there a chance he overreacted and misjudged? He wouldnt go back to his car when asked to do so. Also, he said on the police phone call that he thought Treyvon was a teenager...Then he lied in court this past friday and said that he thought Treyvon was about his age.

Yeah, I knew a woman (sister's friend's mom) who was just walking down the sidewalk in downtown Vancouver in the 80s - a good looking well-to-do white woman - and another crazy white dude run up and bashed her face in for no reason (shits and giggles) and ran away. She lost her sight in one eye. Random non-racial attacks do happen. Honestly, the story about the friend at the store doesn't really sound racial to me unless there were racial slurs and shit being yelled. Sounds like the guy just rubbed a real delinquent asshole the wrong way. I mean, maybe it was racial, but I didn't read anything in the story that said that.

what about the part where the cop says he shouldn't be in that store or area?

Perhaps you have to be racist to see the tension?
Or there is a need to see racism .... much like the Ouija board works.
Also, I was driving this weekend when a middle-age lady passing by flipped me the bird for no apparent reason. She appeared to be white. I'm not sure what to make of this ....

Yeah, that's fucked up, but that doesn't say anything about the motivation behind the attack. It just says that that cops is a really shitty cop making an assumption about the incident.
Not trying to say there isn't a racism problem in the US btw. It's pretty fucking obvious that there is a bad one! Just best not to jump to conclusions, as that can just cause more hate.

One of our block captains followed at a safe distant while on the phone with 911
did not engage but attempted to keep a line of vision on the person.
I think that was ok in fact appreciated.
As far as color when it comes to Neighborhood watch, crime, victims there is no color
just the perpetrators and their prey.
I believe Zimmerman thought he was doing what was required of him and then
a confrontation occurred and in that scary moment he protected himself.
But there should be a punishment for what he did, it was just not a calculated killing
in my opinion. I don't want to see him overly punished because of race.
I believe Zimmerman thought he was doing what was required of him and then
a confrontation occurred and in that scary moment he protected himself.
I believe Zimmerman was an out-of-control vigilante who has a clearly demonstrated unstable past (assault on a police officer while resisting arrest?) ... a history of making mountains-out-of-molehills with regard to phoning the cops for nothing ... a questionable attitude toward race at best ... and who was heard on the phone with the cops huffing-and-puffing in predatory pursuit of a small child (who he had made several condescending\derrogatory remarks about already) and whom he hunted down and then likely lunged upon -- a kid whom you can then hear in a neighbor's phone call screaming bloody-murder for his life after trying to fight off an attacker over twice his stature -- and then shot him dead, for no reason other than he had nothing better to do, was slightly deranged to start with, and should have been removed from neighborhood watch after one of the first 45 times he called the cops for no good reason.
