    aikman is ridiculous.

with the bounties, the nfl had to be concerned about player safety so they came down hard on the saints. deflating footballs in a 45-7 blowout? haha. come on. like a couple said earlier, i don't see how they can find any concrete evidence here of who did what and when. so the investigation will probably be inconclusive but they will tighten up the ridiculous rule of letting each team handle their own balls.

I wonder if his handlers coached him up to bring ISIS into the picture to make it seem so silly that we are arguing over a deflated ball or if he was just free styling?

Technically for his comparison to hold up, we all shouldn't give two shits about the game he is playing in a few weeks from now and he would be playing for free and he certainly wouldn't be wrapping up a press conference right now because no one would give a shit or know who Tom Brady even is.

do you think they are the same handlers who handle his balls?

  • I think its time to move on. The NFL cannot do anything until after the SB anyways. McCann on SI (hes a sport lawyer for those who dont know him) laid out what could happen and when. Goodell can really only hand out a small fine by himself for this per the CBA. If he wants to do more it requires a vote by the executive committee. If they go that route the Pats have to be given adequate time to build a defense. With the SB next week they have a valid reason they need until afterwards to do it. So point being we can argue this all next week and it will be just us arguing it. Im sure Goodell will come out later and say they will do a full investigation after the SB and that will be it for now.

On a new note I''m starting to dig the 49ers hires. Mangini should be a really good DC and to get
Tarver and Sparano as position coaches is a big win. Sparano sucked as a HC but as a TE coach he is massively over qualified and should be great. If they are waiting for Chud's contract to end next week (Indy will not let him interview until it expires as they want to keep him) to sign him as OC I will partially forgive them for canning Harbs.

i know....but i just don't see how they can prove who did it and who was responsible. yada yada. and again--bounties were severely penalized because of player safety. this is not nearly as serious in my mind (i also though the bounty penalties were too harsh too, as that kind of stuff has been going on since football was invented--but i understood why the nfl took that stance)

I'd bet the house on Seattle if the NFL doesn't punish NE until after the Super Bowl

The Refs will make sure NE loses if it comes down to it being a close game. They can't let NE carry that trophy off in another close game..... Pats better be that much better than Seattle to pull this off

Well if you say if the game is close the refs will make sure the Patriots will lose the SB game.

Isn't THAT punishment enough? Just saying.....

I doubt I highly doubt that. Those refs reputations are at stake and they aren't going to make obvious bogus calls just to keep NE from winning.

And we haven't heard anything from the league yet. Only reports from sources...what is taking the NFL so long on this?

If Walt Anderson properly tested the balls pregame with a gauge and then they were retested at half and found to be light, the league should make that known and say an investigation is ongoing as to who deflated the balls. The longer the league stays silent the more I'm inclined to believe Anderson just gave the balls a quick once over and passed them without using a gauge pregame, they could have already been under the 12.5 psi and now if the league admits that they look like schmucks.

Everything the league does, with the exception of actually playing the games, makes them look like schmucks.

I will state for the record i am a lifelong pats fan.

This is honestly the dumbest most overblown story ever and it is looking more and more like BS.

    1. It all started when a reporter or ex reporter from indy stated that D'Quell Jackson turned the ball in because it felt under under inflated to him when he intercepted the ball. Or really?

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000462315/article/dqwell-jackson-footballs-didnt-change-outcome

Ok so how did this all start? There is a new report (so with the press saying the pats are liars and cheats ,it turns out the press was lying in the begining) that the Ravens "tipped off" the colts that they felt the pats were using under inflated balls. This is just laughable. So Harbough got no where when he complained about the pats LEGAL formations, that he calls the next opponent and tries another angle.

    2. It has also been stated that the balls were inflated inside and then taken outside where it was about 30-40 degrees colder. Here is a report from an NFL kicker:
    http://profootballzone.com/nfc/panthers-kicker-graham-gano-says-footballs-lose-air-cold/

Sorry but this just more hate thrown at the pats. I mean ESPN was talking about the snowplow game from the early 80s today, they are just looking to make the pats villians. Meanwhile there was a report that the NFL is investigating illigal communication via cell phone from owners and coaches during Browns games, and there is not a word about that? If that was the pats, it would be Textgate!!

Sorry I am just sooooo sick of it all, lets talk about the damn game that coming up, it should be a good one.

have to agree. yeah can you imagine the outrage if the texting thing was on the new england sideline? with the browns--nobody knows and/or cares about it.

in a fucked up way, i think the nfl doesn't mind this nonsense. keeps them in the headlines during a dull sports week leading up to next week's madness and it gives them a villain that people love and hate to root for.

Belichick knows nothing. Brady knows nothing. Goodell's crack investigating squad have yet to investigate.

Probably the worst couple of days for Robert Kraft since Vladimir Putin stole his super bowl ring (which has gone down in value as well, so Vlad is probably a little bummed out too)

The New England Patriots Prevention of Fumbles is Nearly Impossible
    Posted on January 22, 2015
Yesterday I investigated whether or not the New England Patriots outperform expectations in bad weather. I had several recommendations to look at home and road data, as opposed to just home data. Mulling whether or not to undertake that further (time consuming) analysis, I watched this video:

I immediately noticed something that cannot be overlooked: the issue with ball security and fumbles. Then I remembered this remarkable fact:

The 2014 Patriots were just the 3rd team in the last 25 years to never have lost a fumble at home! The biggest difference between the Patriots and the other 2 teams who did it was that New England ran between 150 and 200 MORE plays this year than those teams did in the years they had zero home fumbles, making the Patriots stand alone in this unique statistic.

Based on the desire to incorporate full season data (not just home games, as a team theoretically bring “doctored footballs” with them on the road) I performed the following analysis:

I looked at the last 5 years of data (since 2010) and examined TOTAL FUMBLES in all games (as well as fumbles/game) but more importantly, TOTAL OFFENSIVE PLAYS RUN. Thus, we can to determine average PLAYS per FUMBLE, a much more valuable statistic. The results are displayed in the chart below. Keep in mind, this is for all games since 2010, regardless of indoors, outdoors, weather, site, etc. EVERYTHING.

    Fumble-Chart-1.png

One can CLEARLY SEE the Patriots, visually, are off the chart. There is no other team even close to being near to their rate of 187 offensive plays (passes+rushes+sacks) per fumble. The league average is 105 plays/fumble. Most teams are within 21 plays of that number.

I spoke with a data scientist who I know from work on the NFLproject.com website, and sent him the data. He said:

Based on the assumption that fumbles per play follow a normal distribution, you’d expect to see, according to random fluctuation, the results that the Patriots have gotten over this period, once in 16,233.77 instances”.

Which in layman’s terms means that this result only being a coincidence, is like winning a raffle where you have a 0.0000616 probability to win. Which in other words, it’s very unlikely that it’s a coincidence.

I actually went back and researched 5 year periods for the entire NFL over the last 25 years. The Patriots ratio of 187 plays to 1 fumble is the BEST of ANY team in the NFL for ANY 5 year span of time over the last 25 years. Not was it just the best, it wasn’t close:

    2010-2014 Patriots: 187 plays/fumble
    2009-2013 Patriots: 156 plays/fumble
    2006-2010 Colts: 156 plays/fumble
    2005-2009 Colts: 153 plays/fumble
    2007-2011 Patriots: 149 plays/fumble
    2008-2012 Patriots: 148 plays/fumble
    2010-2014 Texans: 140 plays/fumble
    2004-2008 Colts: 139 plays/fumble
    2006-2010 Jets: 135 plays/fumble
    1999-2003 Chiefs: 134 plays/fumble
There are a few key takeaways. First and foremost, the 187 plays/fumble dwarfs even the rest of the best seasons the last 25 years. Second, the Patriots have been at the top of the NFL since 2007.

Ironically, as my study yesterday showed, the Patriots performance in wet weather home games mysteriously turned ridiculous starting in 2007. In 2006, they went 0-2. From 2007 onward, they went 14-1.
  • omfg, this is so off the rails now. I actually hate whomever was responsible for this football bs just because that is all we can hear about now. All 3 network newscasts yesterday lead with a story on this bullshit. Pretty sure there are many more important things going on in the world/country than the football pressure in a blowout game and the idea that there is a team who plays a sport in New England called Football that tries to find advantages consistently by bending and breaking rules both big and small.

I understand why some football fans are outraged. I understand why some dont much care. I understand that we are in for at least 9 more days of this story being pounded at us and am very resentful of this.

    Fuckers.

That chart, proves nothing, but is interesting. If anyone thinks that was the first time the pats deflated balls, they are crazy. I think it's a nonstory, but those numbers make them look very guilty. Apparently, no team is that good at not fumbling.
  • So here is part f the leagues statement on Deflategate:

"The playing rules are intended to protect the fairness and integrity of our games. We take seriously claims that those rules have been violated and will fully investigate this matter without compromise or delay. The investigation is ongoing, will be thorough and objective, and is being pursued expeditiously. In the coming days, we expect to conduct numerous additional interviews, examine video and other forensic evidence, as well as relevant physical evidence."

The league is really going to start combing through footage to see who deflated the balls but couldn't even ask for the Ray Rice elevator video. This just goes to show how fucked up the league offices are.

Looks like Trent Richardsons career is over. What a bust he's turned out to be. Other than Eddie Lacy, has Alabama ever produced a good nfl running back?

Sadly not really. Shaun Alexander is probably the best they produced. He was very good but considering its Alabama you would expect to see some HOF'ers.

I think we may have struck a nerve.

I'm disappointed that the Golden Boy lied. I had some pollyannish notion that he'd be the first pro athlete to EVER to admit to ANYTHING...but, no. that said, this isn't going to be a "distraction" that hurts NE's "preparation"....they don't give two shits.

    Go Pats!
