Judith was Maynard James Keenan's mother's name. She was a very religious person. One day she had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This stroke only strengthened her belief in God - something that Maynard found to be pretty ironic. The lyrics in this song reflect how he felt about the whole situation -
    You're such an inspiration
For the ways that I will
    Never, ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you

Fuck your God, your Lord, your Christ
He did this, took all you had and
Left you this way, still you pray, never stray, never
Taste of the fruit, never thought to question "Why?"

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed

He did it all for you...
He did it all for you...

Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you

Pray to your Christ, to your God
Never taste of the fruit, never stray, never break, never
Choke on a lie even though he's the one who
Did this to you, you never thought to question "Why?"

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ as if he knows the reasons why

He did it all for you...

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

It's funny. I am no christian scholar. I was raised Catholic my whole life. I go to church once in awile just to make my mom happy. She is a great christan woman. I have never seen her drink alcohal, swear, ect, ect. In fact she just retired from cleaning our local church after 19 yrs. My parents, hard working middle class folks, sent all four of their boys to a christian school.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, i've seen many a good christian person in my day. From what I have seen and read from the original poster he/she does not represent in any way shape or form the Christ or God I learned about.

Well you are free to believe that "god" intervened in the founding of our nation, but that doesn't make it truth either.

I'm naive? Do you believe in Santa Claus and tooth fairy as well? You know...invisible beings who people have been built up and created fairy tales from to make their own little existence feel special, secure or necessary? Sound like god at all? If there was a god, and any one actually worth "worshiping", we see a world full of great things and great people. Instead we see a history full of war, greed, anger, hate, selfishness and religion being used as a tool to conquer and control, so please save the whole, god is everywhere speech.

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

He also said, ""Ich bin ein Berliner." It didn't mean he was actually a donut. Sometimes being a good person doesn't need to involve doing it in someone else's name.

Most of the atrocities this world has seen and continues to see are done in His name. Holiness is a form of greed that causes normally decent people to do unspeakable things.

And you can quote me on that.

What makes you think people who put Jesus above them automatically makes them more responsible in life? I actually think it makes them the opposite. If you can always get forgiveness, there's no motive not to do what you want. You can even tell a priest you killed someone, and by LAW he can't rat you out! That's fucked!

Many men have died wrongly. Hell, I would have gone on the cross if I honestly thought that it would save the world. doesn't take a special person to do that. it takes a coward not to.

I put my own morality and conscience above me. And it serves me just fine, thank you.

and you are not blessed to be born in the US, it's geographical happenstance. by saying that god blesses the US basically says he hates 98% of the rest of the world, since the other 2% lives in utter poverty and despair.

nice god. good thing to worship.

And why would it be America out of all the countries? Because you have the most money? Because he likes our National Anthem? Maybe it’s because he heard we have 18 delicious flavors of Classic Rice-A-Roni! It’s delusional thinking! And America is not alone with this sort of delusions. Military cemeteries around the world are packed with brainwashed dead soldiers who were convinced God was on their side. America prays for God to destroy our enemies. Our enemies pray for God to destroy us. Somebody’s gonna be disappointed. Somebody’s wasting their fucking time. Could it be everyone?"

Jesus Christ had many good ideals and history paints him as a great role model. But I beleive he would be very saddened and disappointed that his message has been corrupted .
Religion is a point of view. Your entitled to have it if you want.
But it should not be allowed to control people's life .
I do not beleive in god. And as such it should play no part in my life. But my society is controlled by Christian ethos. Just as if I live d in many middle eastern countries I would be affected by Muslim beliefs.
    This is wrong
I'm not a bad person because I dont beleive, I do follow christs teaching in how to treat my fellow man. But this is not persuaded by god. It's cause I think it's good to help those less fortunate, it's good to love my fellow man

I beleive in you my fellow man(woman) and if we can all respect and get along no matter what your beliefs, our world our future would be wonderful.

see this is the thing... for many many of us, we follow 'christian' tenets without even being christians or a part of any godsquad and yet there are those that will tell us were going to a hell that doesnt even exist for us.

And your point, you say you act better because there is a higher power? I just try and be a good person because it's the right thing to do, I want to do right by my girlfriend, my family, my friends, THAT'S why I'm a good person. Not for some higher power, but for people I love. That's why I do what I do. It's worked okay for me.

being a good person just cause is the easiest thing in the world. it flows from within and most of the time you dont even have to think before you act, you just do it... and its the 'right' thing. and its way better than watching your back waiting for someone or something to come back and bite you in the arse.

God or no god, I don't need it in my life.

I'm happy as is. I don't need to waste my time "worshipping" something that may or may not be.

If you need faith in your life, so be it. Either way, I'm sure a god would understand your reasons.

An A+ for having the balls to talk about something on this stupid train full of blocked minds knowing your were going to be bashed. I like your positive message.

Bottom line is when someone is not smart enough to come up with a heartfelt or thoughtful response, they think sarcasm is the way to bring you down. The word comes from the Greek and it means "to tear flesh, gnash the teeth and speak bitterly." That is not the kind of person who wins noble peace prizes. There were many people who loved what you said and it was positive. Here is all I know for myself..

I posted the link above because I understand the power of faith. I once held it close
But I have lost it. And that's my choice. That's where my journey has taken me . It may one day take me back
I was once under th assumption through religion ( not faith) that we needed to save the wicked. That my god was the one true god and others worshiped false prophets.
That if we didn't save them they would burn in hell for eternity..

Well sorry that's wrong . If there is a god I'm sure he would forgive me of not kneeling on the ground worshipping him, living in fear of him. But he would recognize that I am a good person. That I do good in this world and he would allow me access to heaven .
But my reason to do good and be good is based on me wanting to do that. To teach my daughter to do that. To be good and encourage that kindness in others so that we may all share in the bounty of this planet together
Sometimes I fail to be good as well. I'm only human. But I will say sorry to those I offend or hurt
Not sorry to god and feel forgiven meanwhile those I hurt feel that hurt and cannot heal without my offer of sorry

"God is nowhere to be found conveniently."

That lyric sums it up for me. God? God to me is a great Mystery. I'm happy leaving it at that. When I want to get close to something sacred I look at a tiny spider mite or a huge redwood, dew sparkling on the ground or stars flickering in the great cosmos, or marvel at the power of love.

so why do nonbelievers come to dis the joy and beliefs of others who are celebrating?

The OP is talking about a historical figure, a man to celebrate whether
one believes he was what religion has said or not.

If one doesn't want to celebrate and enjoy why come at all?

I'm an atheist, but I find atheists (a few evident on this thread) who belittle and mock Christians to be made of the same stuff that pushy bible bashing Christians are - with similar self assured, blinkered tactics.

Nobody should try and make somebody else feel stupid for their beliefs (or lack thereof). That applies to both sides of the fence. Have a debate about what the OP said, but the moment you start......

    a) implying someone is lacking some character or "missing out" in their lives without god; or
    b) liken god to the tooth fairy

...you have no credibility in my eyes.

My philosophy is, all people, irrespective of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation have equal opportunities and capabilities to be wonderful, or to be c*nts.
