"We Buddhists are supposed to save all sentient beings, but practically speaking this may be too broad a notion for most people. In any case, we must at least think in terms of helping all human beings. This is very important. It is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help another, the least we can do is to desist from hurting them."

I usually don't post much, but PJ Radio seems to be not working this morning....so with fear of getting my head chopped off, I will put in my two cents (with inflation my two cents are not worth much btw, but hopefully someone can find comfort from this message). First let me say that I don't want to try to make anyone believe anything...I just want to share. I have a passion for rapors (birds of prey) and until 2005 I did not know that they exist in my area (Western NY). Pre 2005 hawks, falcons, eagles, were all just names for sport teams--nothing that I thought would be all around me. Well on a trip to Florida in 2005 I saw a huge nest on top of a very high pole and that image stuck with me. When my husband and I returned to NY all of a sudden I started noticing red tailed hawks sitting on the light poles and flying in the air. Flash forward to 2012, now I know that hawks, turkey vulters, even eagles (I was soooo happy the first time I saw an eagle at Braddocks Bay) are around this area.
My point. Just because you don't see something, does not mean that it does not exist... The hawks were always there...I just never looked up. I am a believer, and nothing that anyone could say would change my mind, I have seen the many wonderful ways that God has worked in my life. (now I am not saying its all roses, but I can mix the light into the grey.) God is not responsible for the horrible things of this world..THIS is hell IMO. Luckily for me the Holy Spirit has given me the ability to look past all of the horrible things that God's name has been used for, because that almost killed my belief. I don't have all the answers tho.
Much love and goodluck to this thread. IMHO this has made for some good reading.

I for one am glad PJ radio is on the fritz cause I very much enjoyed your story...
I love birds and it brought great visual pictures to my day... thank you!
I felt your comparison was insightful and heartfelt, one I will ponder often.
My bird watching times ...
I feel a great connection to God's world and find my peace there.
Thank you Pandora, I dunno there is just something that is spiritual about bird watching to me, and it is amazing that I am so passionate about something that I was unaware about before. I don't want to tell people what to do, and one cannot really show someone HOW to believe...but it is amazing how we can live our lives without knowing what is all around us...like me with the birds.. . If one could just consider that this could be the case for GOD. Anyways "eyes no eyes, theres no difference, every life is looking in"---no matter if you believe or not--we all seem to be looking in.

beautiful thought!
and also me with football, didn't discover till I was fifty :? ...
I even went to games but just never appreciated the game, the talent,
the excitement, the love of.
It is about appreciation and one day I just felt it!
There might have been a guy named Jesus that walked the earth but I wouldn't bet on it. Who's to say that they recorded everything accurately back then anyway? I mean we live in a time of modern technology and we can call across the world in a nano second and we still cannot get our stories straight. So what makes you think that in this time of writing on lamb’s skin that they were so deadly accurate? Sorry not buying it. Jesus at best was a made up story for people to follow his example. Which is fine. I mean from all the stories Jesus seemed nice. You don't need God on your life to be a good person to other people. If that helps you then great but I find religious people being the biggest hypocrites.
Look at the Pope...he just said that "Gay marriage is the fall of man kind". This is coming from a guy who wears red shoes!!!!

JB wears red shoes ... what are we insinuating
yes I agree wholeheartedly
Also I'm seeing a lot of not nice people around in our world
I wonder if they did believe if they would be nicer :?
I don't think religious people are hypocrites anymore than anyone else
none of us are perfect nor claim to be. I do think religious people
seem to be judged more than others though and expected to be perfect.
To clarify "me" ... I'm not religious, I do not follow a religion ...
I believe in God.

WOW you dont even believe that Jesus existed? Well i got news for you my friend, all religions believe that Jesus walked this earth. Take a moment and at least think about this.....Muslims....believe that Jesus was a prophet and he ascended into heaven with Allah to be judged. Thats 1/3 of the world my friend! Ok now lets look at Buddhists and Hindus, they believe that Jesus was a wise man and a teacher. They preach about him all the time. Now lets look at Jews-they believe he was a teacher of love. Now lets look at Catholics and Christians, they believe Jesus is the Son of God. So who is left? %10 of the world which are Atheists and Agnostisits and others, well even many of them acknowledge the existance of Jesus walking the earth. So in the history of the world there have been about 120 billion people + and most of them acknowledged the existence of Jesus but you somehow come to a conclusion that he didnt even exist! HMMMMM SO you put yourself into a category that is less than %10 of all the humans that ever existed! So now I have one BIG question for you......dont you need more FAITH to deny Jesus existed, then the amount it takes to believe in Jesus existed? You see? You are putting more Faith into something that is soooooo in the minority and denying something that is ssoooooooo in the majority! Have you ever thought about it? Cause you do have Faith! Just in the odd minority which is much harder to believe! God bless you! !
Theres no time like the present
A man that stands for nothing....will fall for anything!

No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. There is also not a single contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus came well after the life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings.
You cannot prove a negative. For instance, you can't prove I didn't have a three way with Mitt Romney and Angelina Jolie last night. I could just say 'have faith'...

You can 'prove' insofar having 'evidence of absence'. I'm guessing your example could easily be disproved.
What shadowcast is saying is that there is a 'evidence of absence' pointing the the non-existence of Jesus (the christian son of god jesus).

If one looks at the best evidence for creation or the beginning.....its the Bible! There has been no other evidence that is better or stronger. Our founders knew that we would serve one of the two, God or Govt. They also knew from experience that if it was to be Govt., there would never be true liberty and freedom. So they made sure to include God in all of our founding documents and also made religion and moraility our two Pillars of Strength. Even the Atheist founders agreed with that notion because of history in Europe, Russia, Asia and elsewhere. They wanted something new and different. They chose Liberty and Freedom for all mankind with our rights granted from God. That is the only way to stop MAN from taking over the federal govt. and taking over mankind. The Govt. serves and protects us and are subservient to us. They work for us. This experiment has created the most productive, free and prosperous society in world history! There is no other way. Its been a blessing to be born here and be raised here. I pray that we recognize our history and expose the threats to it also, from the growth of progressivism. Cant we all just stay in the middle? Cant we all just stay where we were about 10 years ago....I want to go back......cant we reverse the natural movement to the left....and just hold her steady for another 100 years or so? Without being divisive and rigid.....i have been studying all other religions in the world and every one of them have something in common.....they all acknowledge the existence of Jesus Christ. They all compliment him and think he was smart and wise! They either believe he was a prophet, teacher, wise man or son of god! Even Atheists believe that he walked the earth! So if there have been about 60-70 billion people after Christ, and about %90 of them believe that Jesus walked this earth, and most of them believe he was tortured and hung on a cross, ISNT THAT ENOUGH to praise him? Even if he is just a hero to you.....isnt that enough to praise him? I know one thing.....if you put anything above you, you live differently! You live better for the world! Put anything above you and you look at things differently! You treat people with more love and respect! So cant you just put Jesus above you even if he isnt the SON OF GOD? Cant you just put something above you that makes you more responisble for the life you live? At the end of the day.....its only good for society if we all do this! So may God bless Pearl Jam and its fans, USA and its people, and all the world!
With everything you have written within this entire thread, for all your beliefs and promotion of how great God and Jesus Christ are, here’s my question?
Why do you want to go back 10 years?
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.
You cannot prove a negative. For instance, you can't prove I didn't have a three way with Mitt Romney and Angelina Jolie last night. I could just say 'have faith'...

Sorry - misunderstood how your 'can't prove....' was directed. Regarding the burden of proof...
Depends what you're trying to prove or disprove and why. And whether you're bothered, really. Or if someone accuses you of a crime or something... If you were going on and on and on about your threesome, I could tell you to prove it (ie the burden on you). But then again, you might just keep on going off on tangents, coming up with fairy tales, etc. - so much so that I get really fed up and take it upon myself to do my research/observations to show you there is 'evidence of absence' of this threesome. Or just leave it.... I guess in this case, I could actually prove you didn't do it, but in a more general sense, the burden is on the one who is the most bothered/has the most interest in this 'proof'. Then again, once proof (or absence thereof) has been determined, all parties need to agree on the criteria and the proof or absence of evidence. Jeez... all this 'proof', 'evidence of absence', 'absence of evidence'.... I'm rambling on... should go to the lounge car and have a drink!
It is true there is no evidence at the moment that comes from Jesus' lifetime
that he existed at all.
But this was also true for John the Baptist until just recently
and other poor preachers at that time. Why should there be?
I don't know a lot about religious history but feel this is probably not unusual.
Not to be disrespectful, but during his lifetime Jesus was not someone
who they would write about. His time was short though he touched many with
his new beliefs. These beliefs, a new hope for the down trodden, one God and a heaven
to reward those who have suffered awaits us all.
His life stories were passed down through the generations and chronicled
a century and a half later. For me that is proof enough he existed.
A cave was found that some suspect was John the Baptist
place of worship but of course some are disputing. This 8 years ago or so.
There will always be disputing and this is where people find their faith or not.
I have not found that faith as of yet in my life but perhaps one day.
I feel a very real kinship to Jesus though and after watching a recent documentary
feel he was an amazing man. He stays with me.
Whether he was just a man or whether he was sent here
by God to teach and was given miracles ...and I do believe in miracles!
I don't know
but I know God and God's love just as Jesus did and as he taught.

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win ."
In all fairness, the only thing the Bible can be used for is to use in evidence that Jesus walked the Earth. However, The Bible isn't even complete. I've had 8 years filled with courses and research of religion. Two things to think about: the Roman government assembled the Bible and picked Christianity as the religion of the people and there have been other books of the Bible not included that show very different view points. At the time of Jesus, there were also 4 other men that were thought of to be the equivalent of Jesus, as we have many rabbis or ministers present day. It was an accessible religion: it was new and Christians were the only ones to not accept the Emperor as a "godlike figure". They then needed to have some sort of governing body, so they made a set of rules that incorporated whatever they wanted the followers and citizens to follow. It's still the basic governing rules Christians follow today. Word spread quickly because there were now roads and things that made travel easier. Three more parts of the Bible have been discovered and dated to the times Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written. Over 100 years or more after Jesus' death. No first hand accounts. Peter, Mary Magdalene, and Judas all have gospels that have been found. Mary Magdalene was recognized as a prostitute until recently. Her gospel is the most intriguing. You can sense its written from a woman's perspective and shows Jesus performing no miracles (not saying he didn't ) but rather chronicled her personal relationship with him. From her explanations, they both had more of an agnostic point of view on things. Judas was very similar. To say the be all end all is the Bible is not a very valid argument. The stories are not meant to be taken literally. There was a huge uproar in a theology class of mine when our professor explained this to us because people couldn't grasp the fact and understand that the stories were meant to be teaching tools. I've always pondered the question- if Jesus was a Jew, then why wouldn't his followers be?
And yes, Jesus was crucified. But look at people today claiming to be the "son of God" or a prophet. They are laughed at, thought of as crazy, put in jail- whatever the case may be. During that time, it was a similar situation. Here's this crazy man with followers claiming to be the son of God.
Interesting stuff none the less. Not saying anybody is wrong or right of course and definitely not throwing my beliefs into the ring because I have no fucking clue what they are. I'm just enjoying the open discussion (without superiority or name calling ), the journey, and living the best life that I can.
In all fairness, the only thing the Bible can be used for is to use in evidence that Jesus walked the Earth.
That's not evidence. The Bible was written approx 50-100 years after the supposed date of Jesus's existence, and none of the dozens of contemporary histories of the period make any mention of him.
There is zero historical evidence that Jesus ever lived.
If people think the Bible can be used as an historical document then they must also believe that Moses parted the red sea, and that the Earth is 6000 years old.
