it's saturday afternoon around about 1543hrs. here are my thoughts and memories of my trip from cardiff to dublin to see pearl jam.
wednesday was spent travelling to and then walking around dublin. everyone was able to get their stuff together and we had no problems getting to cardiff airport. our flight was delayed by 45mins but no problems after take off and it was only an hour flight in our "canoe with wings" across the sea to dublin. on arrival, we grabbed a bus into town. mu mate chief and i picked up our tickets, found our hotel and generally walked a lot of phucking miles before getting back into town and meeting our erstwhile colleagues who were calmly ensconsed in a quiet pub. there we met some more jammers having a few drinks pre-gig.
roll on to wednesday evening and pearl jam in dublin was a blast, my vocal chords still hurt from the singing and shouting that happenned while i was jumping around in the pit. the music that was played was excellent. the set began with "inside job" which was a storming choice for an opener. there began an awesome couple of hours that didn't stop until the end of 2nd encore. songs played included world wide suicide, animal, given to fly, corduroy and life wasted. oh, and a song that pearl jam have never ever played to an audience ever, a song called education from the lost dogs album. the 1st encore included the most haunting spine tingling version of black i've ever heard or could imagine experiencing. the band finally played out the 2nd encore with a cover of thin lizzy's boys are back in town; their own song leash; and then neil young's fuckin' up. the whole evening with pearl jam was so good, it held so many thoughtful vibes and grooves. the whole crowd singing pretty much every word of every song. this is the best gig i've been to in many years, and i've been to a lot.
my travelling compatriots and i headed on back into dublin town for a few drinks afterwards. a brief sojourn through the temple bar until 0200hrs thursday. after that, my mate chief and i headed out to get some food and found an awesome american diner called eddie rockets. this produced the best cheeseburger i've devoured in a long time (if you know me that's saying a lot as not much compares favourably with cardiff's own servinis diner), coupled with fries and a strawberry shake. overall, we managed about 3 and a half hrs kip in the hotel then we were out the door to grab the bus and get to dublin airport by 0730 thursday morning. the flight back to cardiff was pretty cool as cloud cover was minimal and i had an excellent view of the gower and worms head while my head rang with the joyous music from the night before.
for Gen of cardiff, i'm sorry you couldn't get a good view from the main auditorium, 2 of the ladies travelling in my party from cardiff had the same problem - fortunately, they were overheard talking about how they couldn't see by a friendly security guard who gave them the required pink wristbands and they got into the early-bird front pit.
i can only wish to get to see pearl jam again on this european tour, but i'm a bit broke now and there are others out there who have yet to see them so i guess they are more deserving than me...
been 3 days since the gig... just coming round now.... words just aren't enough guys...
been to every one of their irish gigs, this one just left me speechless... the greatest band in the world by far...
die on a hilltop.. eyeing the crows,
waiting for your lids to close..
but you want to watch as they peck your flesh..
Ironic that they go for the eyes first
haven't got a chance to post anything on this yet...it was the best gig i was ever at and if any gig ever tops it i'll b very suprised! been waitin for 6 years for that gig and it was everything and more than i imagined! leash was amazing..rvm, wws, indiffierence and so on! there wasn't a weak moment in the whole night! it now means that i have 2 see them again by the end of this tour! they are the greatest band in the world and even better life! its still sinking in that i actually seen them..the pit was amazing! really good atmosphere and a really vocal crowd! unemplyable in the sound check was cool..dont know if any1 else heard it..but yeah truly amazing!
er ... yes it is .... ive had this arguement a million times ... the republic is obviously a republic and not part of the uk, or great britain, but it is part of the british isles. Its only a geographical reference.
the gig was truly awesome .... my first time seeing pearl jam .... up there with the best gigs ive been to
This completed my Hat-Trick of Pearl Jam gigs in The good aul Point. What a fantastic gig this was, even 4 or 5 days later Im stil smiling thinking about it.This band can do no wrong in my eyes and are for me anyway THE BEST BAND in the world.A lot of different songs had gone through my head as openers but Inside Job caught me completely by surprise,a fucking crackin choice. They played most of what I wanted to hear but I was sorry not to hear Yellowledbetter or Baba O Reily again, but the rest of the set was pure class played with the passion of the band circa the "Ten" era.
I could tell you how i felt during each of the songs they played but Id be here for the next 6 years!
Every song was a highlight for me so no point in trying to list any in particular.
Thank you Pearl Jam for the memories
3 magical nights in The Point:

23rd August 2006
And a craicing weekend in London
18th June 2007
Wembly 18th June 2007
The Dragon was behind Boom on the amps.
No Code and Binaural were toured in Ireland so that is probably why they didnt play many tracks form them.
Did anyone else notice Ed went through 3 or 4 microphones. Alot of what he was singing was not being heard, but this seemed to be ironed out by midway through. But a new mic was put out for each encore.
well, that morning, I woke up to find Helen and newagehippie long gone. I knew they were gonna queue early so I wasn't surprised.
so I sat around with redrock, waiting for stoney to wake up. we then changed clothes and all that stuff you do in the morning and got a bus to the centre. (the bus driver tried to hit on me btw. lol. )
then we went to Temple Bar to meet some fellow jammers, which was so so so much fun and overwhelming (had serious trouble trying to remember everyone's name.).
after a few pints and some more people a whole bunch of us decided that now was the time to hit the queue. so we took 3-4 taxis there.
after standing behind the gates for a while we finally entered. :D:D the GA queue was very long but I didn't mind. there was one person I knew standing next to me (dbk ) but it was still good.
the, finally, we got in!
the security was handled qiute well, I just didn't understand why I had to go around the whole damn building to get to the toilets.
after standing about in the lobby for a while I went in. got a place basically in the middle of everything. Byrnzie came and stood with me during Paddy Casey, who wasn't all that bad. he deffinately knew what he was in for and handled it well. felt quite sorry for him.
and then - it was time! the lights went down and the people went crazy. Inside Job! *wwwaaaaahhhhh*
and when I'm saying the crowd went crazy, I mean CRAZY!
after the first few songs I couldn't handle being in the middle anymore because I couldn't breathe, couldn't see anything and was tossed around a lot. so I started politely working my way to the side.
I actually thought I was young but there were some 15-16 years old kids next to me in the middle. when I got to the side I was kinda conserned for them cause the middle of the crowd was very very intense and I hoped they hadn't gotten hurt..
the show was just. just brilliant. the crowd was so great and sang along to just every song. there was a guy near me who kept jumping about to every song.
I had such a great time even though I was "on my own". lol. even when this some guy kept walking back and forth in front of me and grabbed my thigh 3 times as he passed. (I even got a tiny bruise!)
oh and.. Indinfference. I just love that song so much, it means so much to me and brings back so many things. and they played it!!!
when I heard the first couple of seconds of it my eyes just watered. I basically cried during the whole song, singing from the top of my lungs. after the song, I couldn't believe my ears - Black! so I cried a little bit more.
I just loved it when the crowd kept singing the "dy dy dy dy dy dy dyy"-part in the end of Black.
all in all, I couldn't have asked for a better show. the first Pearl Jam show I've ever seen.
I had so much fun after the show too, talking to all the lovely people!!! :D xxx

ok... i've actually had this argument as well.. and you are correct (and my stance on this was in agreement with yours on an argument on this very forum)
but you must be the only Irish person who acknowledges this fact... the Irish government doesnt officialy recognise it as being part of the British Isles
In Ireland the use of the name "British Isles" is highly controversial, because of the perception that its use implies a continued constitutional relationship between the sovereign states of the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. This perception can often lead to the incorrect belief that the United Kingdom retains sovereignty over the Republic. Due to these geopolitical connotations, the use of the term in the Republic of Ireland is controversial.
According to the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern, British Isles is not an officially recognised or used term, and no branch of the Irish government, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Embassy in London, officially uses the term, though rare usage does occur.

I just thought I'd let you be the gentleman and pay for it. completely forgetting that you are a Scottish gentleman.
and I was gonna pay you back after the show but you disappeared. so get yourself over here and I'll buy you a pint!

Well, thanks to everyone that was there, and thanks to Pearl Jam for showing up. And thanks to the security who, although they hadn’t a clue what was going on, made it a pleasant day – anytime they found out any bit of information, we knew about it. So Paddy Casey wasn’t much of a surprise. One security guy was even offering us coffee at the top of the queue . They were giving us water and sweets at the front row . It was all so well behaved. I was at the barrier in the pit on Mikes side of Jeff and I thought it was the most comfortable concert I’ve ever been to. The only song where I was slightly nervous was DTE but that was it. The people behind me didn’t look so comfortable though
That’s about all I have to say really
It’s ok it’s okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
It will be a long time before I get my head around putting the whole thing into some kinda perspective.
‘We were far from the only ones who were surprised at how rough the crowd were behind the second barrier.’
Jim, I think most people understand. It’s common knowledge that the second barrier is the worst place to be. I probably only had a few hundred people behind me so it was no problem pushing back. Also most of those had been queuing all day so had no drink in them and were pretty dedicated fans. I experienced that at Velvet Revolver in January so I would never stand there again… unless I’m early enough to be in the pit, I’m going to be out the sides towards the back.
Anyway I was so happy for everyone there with me – Casey for his 15th show had to come all the way to Dublin to get to the barrier and to get a pick  , Redrock and chime getting their first picks, Jenny getting an Ed AND a Jeff pick  and Damien getting the tambourine and the cork  . Wow!
Thank you dunk for the badges, Casey and Damien got the other two... I owe you a pint. Sorry I didn't get to meet yer wife and have a drink with yas.

lol. I can't believe Byrnzie didn't see them, I mean, he's wayyy taller than me and all.
but then PJ started and the girl stood up.
not really something I'd like to see again.

and one time when I looked at the Spanish couple's direction.. the girl was down on her knees in front of the guy.. erm. well, giving him a bj.
lol. I can't believe Byrnzie didn't see them, I mean, he's wayyy taller than me and all.
but then PJ started and the girl stood up.
not really something I'd like to see again.
they were also surprised to learn you couldn't smoke indoors. as if the huge banners they have in the venue aren't visible.
