I believe the band has (re)won many souls in Arnhem. I say this because they put in a great effort and a huge amount of enthousiasm, even when the crowd was not really responsive, imo. My guess would be that about 66% of the crowd couldn't tell the difference between Insignificance and All or None (just to name something) if they were asked to.
These days lots of people go to a concert just so they can tell their colleagues they have seen Pearl Jam. That in itself is not really a problem, everybody has a right to see whatever they like. It starts to be a problem when people just do not even give applause for a song, talk throughout the entire show or spent more time getting beers than actually listening to the music. Unfortunately, I was on the tribune opposite the stage, and this behaviour really was going on all the time around me. The two guys in front of me talked to eachother during the whole show, I'm not kidding you. Pretty annoying.
Anyway, coming back to the point here, even though most people around me didn't recognize Leash (!), Man of the Hour or Lukin, the band really gave all they had. I have a feeling they knew the crowd mostly wanted to hear songs from Ten, and they did just that. That is not criticism, mind you. If you can reach a big audience by giving them a right mix between old songs and "new" songs, if you can turn a mindboggling ugly venue with bad acoustics (I couldn't hear Boom playing the whole show) into a party-hall, you really are the best band in the world. I really was overwhelmed by the pure enthousiasm of the band. Great job.
I'm new to the message pit and this show was my very first Pearl Jam gig. I loved it. I'll just copy here what I wrote on my Livejournal.
Two days after the show and I'm still utterly speechless. More than 'damn' and 'Eddie is my personal god' isn't coming from lips. I am madly in love since the gig. It was awesome, draining and life changing. I still feel empty (show opener 'Release' is responsible for this mostly) but so awake and alive. I've barely slept tonight, but I feel like I'm back.
I can't describe what happened when Eddie stood there in blue light, his arms raised forward and started singing "Ooh..., ooh..., I see the world...". It's like with his soul and his singing he pulled another part of the pain locked inside me out. There is still the self doubting, but the pain is almost gone. And i didn't even consciously know it was still there. I know this will be a marker in my life forever. A new tattoo is on it's way.
The set list was amazing. There were a few song I would love to have heard, but hey, who am I to whine about this after such an amazing show.
I want more!! Damn my empty bank account!
Hi there, I'm new too and I can totally recognize myself in your words and also I hate my empty bank account... I'm married to the greatest guy in the world, but all I can think of is Eddie and his voice and his/their performance!
Therefore I just need to see them again, so I can honestly say: I LOVE PEARL JAM instead of thinking, dreaming and talking about Eddie... It was such an amazing concert.
Maybe I'm also a bit confused because I wanted to see them for such a long time now. I was waiting then in Werchter when the big tragedy took place at Roskilde... Ever since I told everyone that I really needed to see Pearl Jam playing before my death. Well, it has happened now and I'm so happy! (Also that I'm still alive and hey, they did not play my favourite song - Black - maybe it has something to do with the fact I want that song at my funeral?!?!)
Anyway, I'm not working these days, only looking at my bankaccount (in hope to see a lot of money from somewhere...) and at tickets to see the boys again somewhere around Europe... I'm infected with a disease, I'm confused, I want more, I'm overwhelming happy and I'm a member (finally!) of Ten Club, yeah!
This was my second PJ concert, last time was in Oslo 6 years ago. Impossible to compare shows to one another but I have to say that this was an awesome night! There was four of us who drove all night (15 hours in the car) from Sweden. The plan was to hit the pubs and clubs of Arnhem after the show, but we where to damn tired. I guess the long trip did it's part, but all the jumping and screaming our lungs out certainly had something to do with it as well. We hardly needed the car stereo on our way home to Sweden, 'cause we all still had Ed's voice singing inside our heads. Thanks PJ, I hope I'll get the chance to see you guys again!
BTW. My favorite on the night: Man of the hour!!!!!
After waiting for many many years (last time was RAI '96) I finally got the chance to see Pearl Jam again, in Arnhem. And what an experience it was!! I already got emotional when Release started... hahaha...
Unhappily I was not standing in the front, so I had to force my neck to see something, but luckily there where screens on both sides of the stage.
I was feeling really lucky they played songs like Given to Fly, I got ID, RVM and Yellow Ledbetter! Some of my favorites!!
And the joy of the band and Eddie's moving words really made me love them.
Please guys, come back soon!!!
Just can say another word to the concert I saw, absolutely great!
This was my 3rd time I saw Pearl Jam (17-07-'93, Pinkpop 2000 and Arnhem 29-08-'06) and I think they even have got better. I was afraid they maybe didn't got the power anymore, but I was wrong...(so wrong)
I can recognize myself in the words of Nijntje1973...haha, also I'm married, but I'm at this moment totally in love with Eddie...His hands when he's singing and that voice....But of course the rest of PJ also were the best.
And to react on the words of Braudel...yes I think you're right, but...I have to tell that I also didn't know all the songs of Pearl Jam...Why? Well I listened to the albums, but didn't buy them.... The songs I like are the ones remembered, maybe to bad, but I enjoyed the gig even though.... I really love to see them again soon! My love for Pearl Jam is alive!
After a train-journey of about two hours I just returned from the Arnhem-show.
Great show! Unfortunately no big surprises on the setlist. The boys were obviously having great fun.
Moment of the evening: Eddie running up the corridor in the middle during Rocking In The Free World. He stops only 3 feet away from me. Takes the hand of a girl and continues singing. The tears (of joy) of that girl after Eddie went back on stage were so cute.
Tomorrow Antwerp... Can't hardly wait.
It was indeed a great show! ...as I was that girl...
Saw there are some pictures of it on pearljamonline.nl...
If somebody else still has some pictures of Ed while he's singing the last bit of Rockin In the Free World standing in the corridor on the little step next to me....please send them to me or put them on the website please.
Antwerp was fantastic! Cosy, beautiful and lots more!
Still looking for some tickets for Paris...
The show was great but the acoustics in the Gelredome were not that well. Example: did anyone hear Boom play organ or keyboard? I was standing in the middle of the field 10m in front of the sound-mix-thing.
yeah man i could hear boom playing from my place. in front of the right tribune.
what a good choice to let this guy play with pearl jam for so many years!!
Just can say another word to the concert I saw, absolutely great!

I really like they played Porch!
Doris1976. Don't get me wrong, I do not expect that everybody who goes to the gig knows all the songs...hell, I was with a good friend of mine who asked me 'what was that first song they played?' ...(!)That's the thing about a good live band like PJ, you really can feel their energy coming from the stage, even if they play a song you don't really like that much.
Did I already say that the first four songs were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING?
I'm back in Canada after putting around Europe for two weeks, including one memorable night in Arnhem with Royals55.
August 29 began with waking up in Amsterdam in a daze from one too many Heineken from the night before. Cleaned ourselves up and along with our wives headed for a little breakfast. Amazing how good fried egg sandwich's can be when you are a little hungover. Walked over to Amsterdam Centraal to catch the train to Arnhem.
We were sitting on a train that was suddenly put out of service as apparently some power lines were down and Royals55 says I wonder how much a cab is to Arnhem?!?! Thankfully, we just had to get to Utrech station and then switch trains. Back on track.
Arrived in Arnhem, searched out our Hotel then went walkabout in the city center to grab a bite to eat. I must say it was nice being in a smaller town with a nice feel to it after the craziness of Amsterdam.
We headed over to the Gelredome around 5:30 and picked up a t-shirt and a poster. Then headed over to where they were selling beer and picked up some Bavaria and both Royals55 and I felt it was a bit of a tough one after drinking the champagne called Heineken. Went inside around 7:00pm got some more Bavaria found our seats in section 121 and waited for the show to start.
Was hoping for an Ed pre-set but no such luck. Wolfmother went on at 7:30pm and I have to say I enjoyed their set. They sound very much like Sabbath and Zeppelin which is cool.
There must have been 40,000 people in there by now, the place was packed and the GA floor looked unbelievable from our seats. Here we go, show time. I had been saying to Royals55 all day we were getting 'Release' opener and they nailed it. Truly great.
The rest of the show was fantastic with No Woman, No cry into Betterman, I Got Shit, MOTH, Bushleaguer(with mask and jacket) and RIFTW which we were waving our Canadian Flag to as being hi-lights.
Back to the Hotel for some water and sleep to help get the Bavaria out.
All in all it was a great night they really rocked out, the crowd was great. I was a little surprised at the lack of new material played but what they did play was perfect.
Simply, the best band in the World.
One other thing. Sorry Royals55 for turning the TV off while you were still watching!
Next Up Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it was my first concert ever so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I drove straight from my work to Arnhem. As it took more than two hours I got much time to think about it and prepare myself for the gig. There were a lot of people when I arrived (1 1/2 hour before the concert began). So I was already having the feeling that it would be a concert which I wouldn't forget for a long time. Wolfmother did your job very well. It really got me into the right mood and the band was very good. And then... The real intro began.
Thr lights turned off again and PJ played the first song, 'Release'. A perfect start! Was I really taking part of the gig? Yes, I was! They played a lot of songs I wanted to hear such as 'Even Flow', 'Rearviermirror', 'Man Of The Hour', 'World Wide Suicide', 'I Got ID'. When they played 'Jeremy' and 'Alive' the whole crowd were singing along with Eddie. Everyone in the audience singing "Alive, I'm Still Alive', well, that just gave me a unique vibe I will never forget. What an energy I've felt!
Unforunately I couldn't be at the gig in Antwerp. But the one in Arnhem was really, and really worth it!
I've been to Arnhem and Antwerp (Paris & Berlin still to come)
There was a review in a Dutch newspaper saying "they did what they didn't do 6 years ago: jump around like maniacs, sweat, run around the stage and really enjoy the show. I must say I liked the Arnhem show but Antwerp was better for me. Pearl Jam is back...

My friend and I were two feet from the rail (second row) in front of the most center part of the rail. The railing curved in front of Eddie and divided the front part of the floor into two sections. I was on Mike's side.
The floor on Mike's side was wild; Stone's side seemed a little more tame, but with great energy too. Most people in the seated sections of the stadium were sitting for most of the show. The floor section was huge, and the 10C seemed more into the show than at any other I've seen. Most of the 10C seemed to be Dutch, but there seemed to be a lot of Germans and some Americans too, among others. I heard the ticket lady say that there were around a couple hundred 10C fans there.
Big kudos to Wolfmother for a fantastic set. Stockdale's mic didn't work during the first five seconds of the show opener "Dimension." That fixed, Wolfmother was the best PJ opening act I've seen. Very tight. With three band members, their sound is very clear, their riffs are catchy, and Stockdale's vocals were very good. Looked like many fans were into their music, but most in the very front didn't seem to know the words or be particularly moved by the songs. Wolfmother seemed to have a lot of fun, appreciated the crowd, and gave many compliments to PJ.
At 8:45, the opening of Release began. Then the lights went out. Release turned out to be one of the few physically relaxing moments of the show.
In summary, I can't remember seeing a setlist containing so many of PJ's hard stuff. It was the most physically draining show I've attended.
Here are a few things of the top of my head, in no particular order:
The band seemed to have a lot of sound issues. Ed's mic was replaced three times by my count. He went off to the side of the stage during Stone's second DTE solo then had to sprint back to continue his vocals. I also saw Stone motion to increase the sound of something, either his guitar or Ed's mic. It was hard to tell if the overall sound quality suffered because everyone was singing so loud around me.
Matt's solo during Evenflow was amazing. It was longer and more groovy than the other ones I've seen so far. Jeff was smiling the whole time and seemed in awe.
Bushleaguer was a big surprise. Ed came out with the glittery silver coat and Bush mask and showed us some dance moves. Then he spat wine on the mask, gave it some other lovin', and later apologized for the violence.
Leash didn't get the front floor going as much as the other songs, but I think people were getting tired at that point. Rockin' In The Free World was great. Ed walked around the front part of the arena and handed out tambourines before breaking one on his head.
I uploaded a video of the last 3:37 of Yellow Ledbetter to YouTube. Apologies for the poor camerawork and for not getting the whole song; I was afraid the file would be too big.
Many compliments should go out to the 10C fans for the energy they left on the floor. And as always, thanks for an unforgettable night, Pearl Jam!

i just arrived home from holland, and am still psyched about the concert, as many of you have already said, it was an amazing show! probably one of the best opening sequences i have heard so far. it was such a great surprise that day played mostly their older songs, almost the entire ten, but of course many of you have already described the concert already.
i just finnished sorting through all the photos we made and the four short videos. i will upload them as soon as i get over the flu i managed to catch. they are good but not as great though, as i couldn't get ten club tickets, but we were sitting (jumping around) in an excellent spot on stone's side. just a quick image:

Yes, Pearl Jam is back in Europe and last tuesday they played Gelredome stadium in Arnhem, Netherlands. I have always loved this band since Ten, I don’t own every single album, but when they come here to do a show I just want to be there. I have missed a few shows simply because tickets sell out so fast. My first/last Pearl Jam show was back in 1993 so it was about time to see them again. I was wondering what to expect?
We left Amsterdam in the afternoon to avoid traffic on our way to Arnhem. Arrived at the parking of Gelredome around 4, with plenty of time to visit the city centre of Arnhem since we had reserved seats (yep, field tickets sold out in a matter of 10 minutes!) and be back in time for opening Aussie band Wolfmother (think Deep Purple meets Led Zeppelin, VERY retro). Good band to enjoy live, I would definitely see them again in a club in my hometown.
Around 20:50 Pearl Jam hit the stage and opened with Release (of Ten) I LOVE this song. Absolutely great performance, Eddie Vedder’s voice still sounds amazing, what a way to open the show. After that they rocked the house with Why Go (another Ten song) and ever since then they mostly played the stuff that everyone knows and loves. So not many songs from their latest album, but what a party. The band played very tight and obviously enjoyed themselves. Ed was just great, he sounded spot on and his energy reminded me of that legendary show at Pinkpop 1992! He did a few of his political talks (including spitting on the G.W. Bush mask during Bu$hleager LOL), but he was mostly having a great time with the crowd. The guys are in their 40’s now, but the energy on stage was incredible! After about an hour and after Rearview Mirror had ended they left the stage. I was a little worried, this was short. Obviously I have been out of the Pearl Jam loop for quite a while, I had no idea what their shows are like these days. But the band came back for 2 encores of 5 songs each. During the 2nd encore Ed even left the stage to mingle with the crowd in the field during Rockin’ In The Free World! (Yep, very much like Pinkpop 1992.) So the whole show lasted 2 hours. Wonderful! It has been one hell of a show and it certainly looked like the band was very pleased to be back in Holland. One of my favorites was Man Of The Hour, had never heard that one before, beautiful. It’s been 4 days since the show now, but I’m still touched by the whole night.
I took a look at their setlists here on the Pearl Jam website. It seems that they mix it up a lot (much like Dream Theater), which is great for a band with that much material. I guess they felt like having a party with the old stuff after 6 years of absence. I had a blast!

I agree with all that is written above....it was such a great evening, was excited about it all week long (still am). Can't stop thinking about a next concert; it would be so cool if Pearl Jam could give a concert in Paradiso or the Melkweg in Amsterdam....(or Tivoli in Utrecht, but A'dam is my home-town ) where the ambience would be even better than it was in the Gelredome football stadium. I just like small concerts. Well, probably I am dreaming too much...
The show was great with Leash as my highlight. I hoped they would play Leash but figured they wouldn't. YEAH! All the other great moments of the show already mentioned in other threads were indeed great, but I think I've seen the dvd's too much to be really surprised. One little problem I had during the show: I didn't know where to look sometimes.
Hmm I think my best song of the night was Porch....! I love it... I just see on YouTube the video of Porch, played at mtv unplugged. I had the whole unplugged on video, but unfortunaly it is gone... :-( I don't know if I can get it on DVD?
The bootlegs how can you buy them if not live in the USA?
I'm still dreaming about the gig...Have buy the new CD, I like it.
What a show, I'll elaborate on my 1st reaction on page 1:
After being nervous for days, listening to Pearl Jam non stop for weeks at home, at friends, on my MP3 player etc i got so pumped i felt like a kid at xmas. I couldnt eat and had to piss 5 times in the venue, luckily not once during the show. While i was getting some beers Master/Slave started playing and i knew the moment was there, luckily i got served exactly at that moment rushed back to the front of the venue finding my friends just before they took the stage.
RELEASE!! I see the world, feel the chill ~~ Arms raised in the air, singing along begin till end, I couldnt be happier. Even though the song is often used as an opener i couldnt care less as it means the world to me (lost my father at 10).
After Release i held my girl and BAM! Why Go?! As far as I could tell the crowd reaction was awesome, everybody around me started jumping and the sing-along part was quite loud. Great energy in the song and recognisable for every one present. Folowed by Save You, also a great powerfull song, love the lyrics, caring about someone and going all the way to save you. Severed Hand is my favorite, music wise, song of the new album, so i said YEAH!! Slow, kinda improvised start of Corduroy, the 1st song i ever saw live (back in 2000 at Pinkpop) ~the rejoicing drove me mad~
Than a crowd pleaser, opened with No Woman no Cry, amazing, just to cool to get the crowds attention straight into Betterman. The audience even sang the 1st verse, which often the crowd picks up/ takes over, seemed they were loving it! One of the (many) highlights of the evening.
WWS sounded great live! I remember hearing it on a boot for the 1st time and thinking this song is made to be played live, and it sounded even better in real life. Another song that made a huge impression in 2000: Insignificance. I remember Ed having a little trouble with the tone of the vocals back than, but he nailed it this time! And another crowd pleaser Jeremy followed, yellow lights over the stage, Jeff's famous bass riff, heard it a million times, and still doesnt sound old.
DTE is just awesome, the power of Stone's riff combined with the cynical lyrics, how can one not enjoy this song? Even tho it felt like I was one of the few who were really exited to hear it.. The guy in front of me turned around, smiled at me, noticed I was having the time of my life, gave me a hand and a pat on my shoulder, very nice. G2F is not one of my fave's (yeah I know I'm weird) but it still was great hearing it. Even Flow was just plain wicked. The song that hooked me on PJ in the 1st place. I really enjoyed Matts solo, he is a god. It looked/ sounded like Mike wasnt happy about his part tho.. Introduced with love for the talent of Neil Young (dunno exact words) I Got Shit was just awesome! Followed by a very tight and loud Lukin, STBC and great version of RVM.
Man Of The Hour was a very sweet surprise and sounded lovely live, sadly I couldnt sense the rest of the crowd realizing was a gem this song is. I hope that for Decides2Dream they'll play it again in Italy. Daughter was received very enthousiastic, the tag was cool, but i really really hoped for It's Ok or WMA, still very cool jam. State Of Love And Trust, what can i say? It was soo awesome to hear such a powerfull, (bit) rare classic! Comatose, the loudest song of the new album was perfect for the encore, I expected something else to follow it, but Porch was also very good. Whats the F* is this world? Mike really putting his soul in the solo, it was just perfect! Ed walked of the stage, doing a sort of moon walk that reminded me of the walk on or after Bu$hleaguer on (I think) the Showbox DVD.
And i was correct! Black out weaves its way thru the cities~~ Quite dark, but Ed articulated very strongly, so the lyrics were pretty understandable, even for the untrained ear. Fooling around with the mask, strangling it, after the song he explained that violance etc isnt good, but yeah well.. Madness followed in the front area with Leash, very cool. Alive was such an incridible moment, like a sigh of relieve thru the entire venue, arms raised, lights on and sing along! One of the closer I really hoped for, and got: Rockin’ In The Free World. It was played into perfection, great jam, Ed running into the crowd. It was plain perfection. Even tho I didnt think it would get a big reaction the chorus was sang along real loud. Than Yellow Ledbetter, seems to me it's a great way for them to end a show, slow paced, long solo, improvisable lyrics, all good, not my pick.
All in all, a great show and a magical/ wonderfull experience!
And I would like to add, for all those who had bad experiences with the crowd, I feel bad for you, as every one around me was so nice.. Can't imagine how that must have felt.. I hope all you were able to block out the negative and let the positive energy from the stage brighten the show.

Great job.

Just can say another word to the concert I saw, absolutely great!

The songs I like are the ones remembered, maybe to bad, but I enjoyed the gig even though.... I really love to see them again soon! My love for Pearl Jam is alive!
I really like they played Porch!
Still looking for some tickets for Paris...
what a good choice to let this guy play with pearl jam for so many years!!
peace and love

There was a review in a Dutch newspaper saying "they did what they didn't do 6 years ago: jump around like maniacs, sweat, run around the stage and really enjoy the show. I must say I liked the Arnhem show but Antwerp was better for me. Pearl Jam is back...

Anrhem review now posted on http://www.thebulletreviews.net

And as always, thanks for an unforgettable night, Pearl Jam!
i just finnished sorting through all the photos we made and the four short videos. i will upload them as soon as i get over the flu i managed to catch. they are good but not as great though, as i couldn't get ten club tickets, but we were sitting (jumping around) in an excellent spot on stone's side. just a quick image:

Hey dude! I think I was sitting around you somewhere. It looks like I had the same view as you did.....
Blond hair, jeans and a Pearl Jam - Binaural t-shirt wearing.
peace and love
great videos of that amazing fucking concert in arnhem
thanks for that, man i love people that share

watch also the dutch/belgium Pearl Jam forum http://www.pearljamonline.nl
best concert I've ever been to.
do they sell the bootlegs on cd at sometime?? I don't want to download it, I want to have the disc with the brown, cardboard cover.
it's okay!!
