But what was the crowd like near the front? The upcoming Lisbon shows are my first ever big arena shows and i have 10c tickets, but i'm just worried about the crowd. Does it get really really rough and squashed up front?
You really don't need to worry. I was like 4 meters away from the barrier in front of Mike and there was no pushing and it wasn't even really tight. You could have easily walk around between the people.

But how come theses days people don't even dance or jump no more?
I did that all the time, but whenever some people right behind me started to pogue a little, the security guys started yelling at them. Nobody wants shit to happen, but security (who stil did a good job) yelling at fans - that's what creates bad blood!
C'mon, with the big barriers and Eddie telling us to take care of each other (which they/we did!), what's the big deal. It used to be A LOT more aggressive than last night.
So let'em dance!
The band is showing no sign of getting older, why must the crowd?

It's what I said.I'm 31 years but I wanted to enjoy this concert as much as I did ten years ago.
Well, it turned out to be the opposite.
I was with 5 friends and we were all in the front area.
When Release started I was just getting drinks for all of them so I hurried back into the front area.Me and my boyfriend were so happy so we made our way to the stage. Turned out that two other friends were standing about 4 meters beside us and off course we were happy to see them so we danced our way to them.Samen uit samen thuis!
The moment we said hi I felt the arms of two guys(who seemed to be on drugs, I don't know for sure, they just stood there and looked angry the whole concert) and me and my boyfriend were thrown 3 meters backwards. The crowd we were pushed into reacted instantly and so we were pushed back forward.Well you can guess,we were pushed away to all sides, back, front, left and right all because we wanted to be with our friends.
The security came and gave us a warning but we didn't do anything wrong.
The front area is big enough for all of us but people these days seems so occupied with theirselves that their tolerance level is so low.
I was really shaken up about all this and started to cry.
I'm f...ing 31 years old and have seen so many concerts of so many different bands but never have I experienced this before.I stood in front ten years ago in Amsterdam where the crowd was much more moving around and dancing but the vibe there was much more brotherly than I saw yesterday.
It took me till Jeremy to pull myself together and from that moment I could finally enjoy the show.
What are people like those assholes from above doing in de front area.If you wanna stand still and listen just go to the back or buy a cd.
I thought the pit means the place where the crowd goes wild.
Well there was no pit this concert.
I realized that I am getting old and that the society changed a lot this last ten years.
The only time I felt the brotherhood between the fans was when Keep on rocking in a free world started.
At that time everybody was aloud to go wild and party.
So that's all I have to say: Keep on rocking in a free world!
the eyes. it's all about the eyes. I was fifth row, in front of Mike, and was mesmerized by his presence. During Alive, at some point, I just stopped moving, dancing and just stood there, watching him. I've seen every great frontman in music today, I like and respect many bands, but there's nothing like Eddie, and Pearl Jam. Wolfmother were right. They're the best band in the world, period. This is something I will cherish for me forever, probably the second best night of my life (cos nothing will ever beat the birth of my son).
Also, what's rather funny, is that when I see the PJ setlist of the gig before, I sometimes say "yea, nice, but nothing really unusual". Yesterday setlist (at least before the encores) was nothing really special, but it completely changes when you're there.
I think the setlist is special because there are a lot of songs on it that were special to me before the gig. The others are special now because I was there.
It was special to be there and see them for the first time in my life. I wouldn't go so far as to call it the second most special moment, but I will never forget it that's for sure.

I think you are right about the soul and his energy. I was behind and aside from the P.A. and eye contact was not an option. His face and eyes do show a streght that is pure and honest.

My girlfriend's only complaint: no It's OK tag on daughter - no matter; still a great gig.
Ed was on fire - so engaging and intense.
Never seen the guy smile so much - you could tell he was really enjoying it. Maybe he complemented his red wine with some of the local delicacies such as space cake...
Decipher the illusion, know the facts but retain the magic.
I always said I'd go to the first Pearl Jam concert if You'd ever toured Europe again and I did! Arnhem ROCKED guys, thank you so much for the best live performance I ever saw (and I saw quite a lot, I am a festival-addict).
In the years I started listening PJ (wich is hopelessly late compared to when Grunge ruled the rockscene back in '92 - I was sold on house back then)
my mother started to enjoy their music, especially the easy-going tunes. When I said I was ordering tickets she wanted one too. Now she has Eddy as her msn avatar and talks about a goosebump concert. I think she's in love with you Eddy.
Anyway, great show, thanks a lot, you played my favorite tracks, and especially Given to Fly always gets me!

but didn't we all enjoy the local delicacies... bavaria beer and famous holland bakery (not drug- ones but the real sweet bakery - ohh just the best in the world) and, of course,
a good legal smoke

Last night felt like a 2.5 hour orgasm. The sound was great and they played my favorit "state of love and trust". I hope they do europe again after the australian tour.

Thanx for the complete setlist guys!!! I had already written down 99% myself ROFLL
I have missed the first two songs ( thank GOD, but still kicking myself!!!) because of the traffic.
The show was spectaculair and it was my second (!) show in 15 years of PJ-fanhood. Keep on rockin' in the free world boys!!!
Usually something goes wrong when I want to attent one of their gigs :-(
But anyways, I really had the time of my life last night and played 100 times all their cd's the entire time today, just like any other day really ...hmmmm...
I'm still floating on a little pink cloud and wish(list) that I had tickets to go to all their venues!!! Luckely I can type, because my throat is still sore.
But hopefully it won't take our guys another 6 (light)years to come and visit us again.
Oh, we also had a really annoying dude on our stairs, he was very very drunk and thought he was gonna puke any moment. My friend almost tripped over the poor fellow, but he was really spaced out and wanted to kick him off the stairs, for being such a jerk and he tried talking to my friend all the time. She wanted to enjoy the good music and the kickass cords and not have a conversation with such a fool!!!
Damn... what a superb performance. After the first four songs I thought Eddie would collapse... He seemed so aggressive. Ten years ago I was there, at pinkpop 2000 I was there, but this show totally rocked!! Because of the totally fucked up traffic (it took me 3 hours to get from Amsterdam to Arnhem), I wasn't able to get to the front, so we had to see the show from a small distance :(
And the fans... yeah what shall I say; the attitude changed drastically since Mojo has put fences everywhere and came up with the studid anti-crowdsurfing boards. Since that time the hippies took over I guess. No more pogueing, no more pushing, because that might hurt :?
People look very angry at you when you push them, and even the tiniest ceebration seems to be 'not done'. Wgat the fuck is going on?? Right in front of me was a couple, who didn't sing along anything, who didn't move, the only thing they did was leaning on the fence and looking angry because some people pushed them. I wouldn't say that is was better 10 years ago (damn I talk like I'm old, I'm only 29), but the people who wanted to chill and not get pushed stood in the back and the ones that were not offended by some pogueing and a little kick here and there celebrated at front. Now people think they buy a ticket and they think they have a kind of a chairseat, only standing. 'this is my place, don't push me, because I paid for it.' Such fools..... It is a pretty negative side effect to the safety precausions I guess....
however, my girlfriend Marieke brought her camera, and she made some great pics, concidering the distance:

It's the first time I saw Pearl Jam live, I used to see them at Werchter, but that was after Roskilde so...
It was the best gig I ever saw, I came from Belgium to see them and I'm glad I did it. I hope Pearl Jam comes to Werchter this year, hopefully there won't be an accident this time. At Arnehm a magnificent setlist, the only number I would have heard they hadn't play was I am mine, and Betterman was fantastic.
I hope I see them at Werchter this year.
I've been waiting 6 years to see PJ play live! And even though we were "benched" it was a friggin' awesome show! First time I saw a live show but ... wow! Last year me and my (now ex-)girlfriend went to see Coldplay in the same venue. Somehow it wasn't the same. Pearl Jam, you beat any other band hands down.
Heart & Kidnies!
"Cannot be held responsible for content."
That's it! I mean I like other bands, loads. But non of them can cut it when it comes to Pearl Jam. They're just so different and awesome at the same time!
I wish I'd started a "Black" chant...
Ahhhggg, so many little memories clawing there way back! I don't mind though, as Eddie say's the best gigs are the ones you can't remember.

Great Pics, thanks! Love the mask! I was at the Denver show when he pulled this out, and as you know all hell broke loose!
I've been a huge Pearl Jam fan since about 10 years and I tried to see you for all this time. Yesterday was the first time I saw Pearl Jam live on stage at the Gelderedome in Arnhem!
In my mind you guys got greater and greater al this time. I got to know Pearl Jams music by a friend of mine, who first lend me a lot cd's and later on I got to know the other ones. I'm sure it won't be possible for the band to read all the fan reviews on this website, but if you do: you made my expectations come true yesterday and it was even better!!
It was absolutely incredible to hear Eddies voice live at once! I felt like the energy of the band, went over to the crowd. I think a lot of people didn't even realise already what a great songs you have apart from the hits like Jeremy and alive. It blew me away that you played Rearview Mirror, Leash and even Man of the hour!! :-D
The concert went so fast that afterwards I already wished that I got to see you another time. Thank you so much, it was great!! Good luck with the rest of the tour and I hope to see you back to Holland soon!

I went to the concert on my bicycle cause I live nearby Arnhem . I have to say its just amazing to see these kinds of concerts these days! This was my second time pearl jam show (first time @ Pinkpop 2000) and it was the best show i've ever seen in my life.
I have seen many concerts but I must say that this PJ gig has left me almost enchanted - even now after 2 days! Ten years ago I saw PJ as well in Amsterdam but the show in Arnhem was even better. The energy of the band was amazing. It was so obvious that they were enjoying themselves and they deeply appreciated the feedback from the audience. The crowd sang the first part Better Man - Eddy just listened. Goosebumps!!
I was so glad to see that the anger and fury is still in the band! To me it feels they have a real urge and need to make their music, which is what it makes so damn good. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Definitely an amazing show. Betterman and Even Flow were the highlights for me. That drum solo kicked serious ass. I also have a few pictures, but they're from pretty far off:
The show was great but the acoustics in the Gelredome were not that well. Example: did anyone hear Boom play organ or keyboard? I was standing in the middle of the field 10m in front of the sound-mix-thing.
I'm new to the message pit and this show was my very first Pearl Jam gig. I loved it. I'll just copy here what I wrote on my Livejournal.
Two days after the show and I'm still utterly speechless. More than 'damn' and 'Eddie is my personal god' isn't coming from lips. I am madly in love since the gig. It was awesome, draining and life changing. I still feel empty (show opener 'Release' is responsible for this mostly) but so awake and alive. I've barely slept tonight, but I feel like I'm back.
I can't describe what happened when Eddie stood there in blue light, his arms raised forward and started singing "Ooh..., ooh..., I see the world...". It's like with his soul and his singing he pulled another part of the pain locked inside me out. There is still the self doubting, but the pain is almost gone. And i didn't even consciously know it was still there. I know this will be a marker in my life forever. A new tattoo is on it's way.
The set list was amazing. There were a few song I would love to have heard, but hey, who am I to whine about this after such an amazing show.
I want more!! Damn my empty bank account!
hahaha , yeah same here , keep on logging into to see what others say , btw ellroy , I'm no dude the last time i checked , hehehe
i got touched too by Ed , you can feel what kind of person he is , and next time i will be in front of the stage too , although looking at the crowd gave me a great feeling , aspecially with the lights you could see at the roof , made me feel like heaven for a few moments
think i'm in love
haha sorry for that but hey, dude or girl thanks anyway
What a night!
I liked Ed´s comment about the setlist as he introduced evenflow: "We´re from Seattle and the people there wouold consider this setlist as old school."
Hey, could you stand another drink,
Better when I don't think,
It seems to get me through.

But as a new PJ fan, and my first time seeing them live I felt truly privileged to see Eddie do his George Bush impersonation.
And for them to play Rearview mirror, and Alive, well I couldn't ask for more....But they gave more anyway!
.....They blew me away.....
Now I just need to save up quick and try to see them again.
Thank you Pearl Jam, thank you very much!
I second that.

I’ll lead your angels and demons at play tonight......»
Just wanted to mention that whahahahaha
Thanx you guys!!

It was the best gig I ever saw, I came from Belgium to see them and I'm glad I did it. I hope Pearl Jam comes to Werchter this year, hopefully there won't be an accident this time. At Arnehm a magnificent setlist, the only number I would have heard they hadn't play was I am mine, and Betterman was fantastic.
I hope I see them at Werchter this year.

Sounds like you enjoyed it almost as much as I did, almost.
See him do that spotlight thing from his guitar during Alive, like he did at Reading? That was pretty awesome.
He's a god, a GOD I TELL YOU!
j/k, just getting carried away, sorry...No I'm not...RAARRRW

sorry
Dude those were great pictures. Thanks man. Or girl if you are in fact a girl instead of a boy, whatever, thanks.

Pearl Jam THANX!
p.s. thx for the pics, awesome
I was so glad to see that the anger and fury is still in the band! To me it feels they have a real urge and need to make their music, which is what it makes so damn good. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Anrhem review now posted on http://www.thebulletreviews.net
I liked Ed´s comment about the setlist as he introduced evenflow: "We´re from Seattle and the people there wouold consider this setlist as old school."
Better when I don't think,
It seems to get me through.
