It took the boys a few songs to get going but when paint it black started you can tell they were getting into it.

They've always been that way. Well, not EVERY concert obviously, but (and this isn't exclusive to The Stones) they often come out pretty cold, but they get warmed up and rock out. Look at "Some Girls: Live In Texas '78". They come out VERY cold. The first time I watched it I was actually wincing during Let It Rock, and partially through All Down The Line. But by the time they're getting near the end of All Down The Line they seem to have things in order and the rest of the show is off the chain.

this was awesome.....had about 15 friends over.....I'm just now getting my wits back

was thrilled to hear goin' down. I think we all thought this show was better than we really expected.

beats doing PPV for a fight.....I remember the 20 sec. tyson-spinx debacle.

    91 seconds actually

I saw that on PPV also. Luckily I didn't pay for it. I was 8 and our whole family was at my uncle's house and he ordered it. We weren't there for the fight, we were just there, so he ordered the fight. I forget how much he paid, but he was pissed.

That is a great deal, and it looks like they have free shipping on it too Empty Glass. I already have the CD/DVD set and the vinyl. Even though I'm not much of a vinyl collector I was in a music store and they had it for $19 so I snagged it.

I might order this though to have a backup copy if I ever want to spin one. Plus an extra copy of the DVD which I'm already in danger of wearing out. Though I was going to buy that L&G/Stones In Exile/Live In Texas '78 compilation for my backup DVD. Also for L&G/Exile as it's kind of a pain dragging out the big box set off the shelf whenever I want to watch the movie. And I'm always worried about scratching one of the discs and fucking up my box.

Anybody who doesn't have those movies might check that out as well, 3 Stones movies (2 concert films and an Exile documentary) in one package for $27 on Amazon.

Any of you guys go to IORR? I was just reading over there today and saw that the hilarious guy from the pre-show video with the long hair, when asked which Stone he'd sleep with then said he'd let them all fuck him...

    as seen here...

    Monkeytonk.png
    Monkeytonk2.png

...is actually Monkeytonkman from the boards. I just thought that was pretty cool he got to be in the vid, and he was great. I actually started cracking up at the "It'd be rude to pick, I'd just let 'em all fuck me" line. Classic.

Ga Ga was not that bad... Was disappointed with the Black Keys. I thought Bruce was OK. But for me, the highlights were Midnight Rambler with Mick Taylor and Going Down with John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. Disappointed that Dead Flowers was the poll winner (I voted for Around and Around).

I voted for "Rocks Off", it's one of my favorite songs ever. I love "Dead Flowers" though so I wasn't disappointed that much. They had that webvote thing when I saw them in '97 and we got "Star Star", which was really fucking awesome.

I don't care for Ga Ga that much, but she can sing, and I can't really hate on her too much for her crazy dancing and then defend Mick for the same thing. I think she served her purpose, and did OK.

Black Keys were good I thought, and to play with them on a song they have never played before is cool, because the Stones don't go out on too many limbs with their setlists these days.

Bruce, his voice was kind of off. At times he sounded great, at times he sounded kind of bad, but his energy is what made the performance so great. And I thought it was really great. I'm not even a Bruce fan really, but the guy is an icon, and so is Mick, and seeing those two up there together was awesome. Bruce looked crazy happy, like a kid in a candy store.

Mick Taylor was very awesome. I was so glad, because I was nervous for him. This guy has been playing bars and small rooms for a long time. To go from that to playing a big show like that being broadcast worldwide has got to be an adjustment. Starting off with the non-televised shows to sort of warm up (still a hell of a transition though) probably helped. But he did awesome. I find it funny how animated and mobile he is on stage these days. In the old days he would stand there (sometimes in the dark until he played a solo and got a spotlight) and never move, never have a facial expression, just stare at his guitar and play. Now he's going up and down the stage like Keith used to, putting on a little showmanship, etc. It's kind of silly, but kind of fun at the same time.

Keith really surprised me. He hasn't played that well in years, since probably the Bridges To Babylon tour. He's focused. Notice I said earlier how Keith "used" to prowl the stage? Now he's more like Taylor used to be. He still does a little bit of posing and showing off, but for the most part he's standing there, paying attention to what he's doing, and playing great.

And yes, "Going Down" was great. That Gary Clark, Jr. kid is no joke. He tore that song up, and Keith's solo was really good too.

I was a little disappointed with the sound quality of the broadcast though. Ronnie was really low in the mix, and Keith wasn't that high sometimes. Didn't seem like a whole lot of thought was put into the mix, it's not raw soundboard or anything, but it's not great. Though I'm sure that will be mixed and cleaned up for an official

The only thing missing was Bobby Keys!

  • Not exactly 50 anniversary material but what is your favorite stones lineup? And what is your favorite stones record?
I got the Mick Taylor Stones lineup, with Bobby keys, Nicky Hopkins and Ian Stewart
I got Exhile on Main Street.

The whole period from Beggars Banquet to Some Girls is their best I'd say.

I'm a big fan of the Taylor era too, as well as Bobby and Nicky, so that would be my favorite lineup too. One only needs to watch "Ladies & Gentlemen" to see how smokin' that lineup was. Though I also like the lineup from the '73 tour of Europe (before Bobby got fired) where they had Billy Preston on the keyboards.

There's a thread about just Exile somewhere here on the board if you're interested by the way. It's hard to choose a favorite, but gun to my head I'd probably say Exile too, though it only has two songs I'd rank among my favorites in "Rocks Off" and "Shine A Light". But as far as albums go, it probably is the best.

Lately I've really been into the period between Exile and Some Girls. With those being considered two of their best albums, those three in between (Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock & Roll, Black & Blue) often get overlooked. But there is some great material there.

Ladies and gentleman the Rolling Stones is awesome, it's too bad mick Taylor didn't enjoy his time better in those days..... Heroin will do that I guess.

Goats head soup is kick ass, I've never fully enjoyed rock and roll and black and blue. As far as Exhile goes "Torn and Frayed and Casino Boogie are at the top for me. Ventilator Blues is amazing as well.

I've never fully enjoyed rock and roll and black and blue.

Yeah, "It's Only Rock And Roll" isn't for everybody, and doesn't get a lot of respect. Neither does "Black And Blue", but that's understandable because it was basically a series of guitar player auditions that they recorded. It sounds good, but kind of scattered. But IORR being the final album of the Taylor era, and having one of their most well-known songs as the title track, always makes me surprised that it's not more popular.

I love IORR, it was actually one of the first Stones albums I bought, and I'm pretty sure the first studio album. I might be wrong, but if memory serves me I think my first Stones purchase was Hot Rocks and IORR, because I was specifically looking for "Paint It, Black" and "It's Only Rock And Roll (But I Like It)", and there was no album with both at the time. I bought it mainly because I loved IORR the song, and the album was really the only place to get it at the time. The only compilation it had appeared on back then was "Rewind", and I've never seen a copy of that in a store, and by that time it may have already been out of print. There is some really great Taylor guitar on that album though. "Dance Little Sister" has a mind blowing lead guitar, that for some reason (perhaps Keith being threatened or just mad at Taylor) is buried in the mix, but with some headphones and some volume you can enjoy it. "Luxury" is a simple but cool track as well. "If You Can't Rock Me" is about as generic of a Stones song as you can get, but I love the studio track because the sound/production is great. Don't care for live versions though. I really enjoy "Fingerprint FIle" too, I love Taylor's bass (Wyman is playing synth). The live version from "L.A. Friday" with Ronnie on bass is really great too. Then you have "Time Waits For No One" which is gorgeous. Taylor's guitar work is great. "Short And Curlies" isn't one of my favorites, but it's a decent little track. If you stripped it down a little bit, try to imagine it without the 70's sounding production, it would fit right in on "Beggars Banquet". "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" is a fun little cover but nothing groundbreaking, and I don't think they really expanded/improved on the song or did anything to make it their own. I'll take The Temptations version any day of the week. All in all I don't consider it great (at least not compared to their Beggars through Exile work), but it's a good little record with some songs I enjoy.

"Black And Blue", I like it but I'm not crazy about. It's interesting. Kind of an oddity. Doesn't really belong to any of the 3 main eras since there are various guitarist on the album due to it being both a recording session and auditions, but Ronnie is on the back cover. "Hand Of Fate" and "Memory Motel" are the only tracks I REALLY enjoy. A few others like "Hey Negrita" (love the guitar riff), "Cherry Oh Baby" and "Crazy Mama" are really good but not among my favorites. "Hot Stuff" is kind of silly and VERY dated, but I enjoy it. I'd rather get raped by a grizzly bear than listen to "Melody" or "Fool To Cry" though. Once again, a good little album, but nothing groundbreaking about it.

Speaking of "Hot Stuff", I jokingly predicted that it would open the 12/15 PPV concert. When the show started, I heard the opening little riff of it, and I started laughing my ass off. I couldn't believe they'd play it at all, let alone open with it. But it turned out to be the beginning of the fan video (I didn't know they were going to show that, I thought they'd go right into the show) and the studio version was just being used in the video.

Saw this funny "story" posted on IORR and thought it should probably be put up here as well, it really cracked me up. Don't forget to watch The Lion King trailer.

    http://www.newsfromtheend.com/2012/06/scientists-using-gimme-shelter-in_1903.html

Scientists: Using ‘Gimme Shelter’ In Trailer Makes Movie Look Cool As Shit

Berkeley, CA– Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley this week released the results of an extensive ten-year study that analyzed the reactions of potential movie-goers after watching trailers featuring the iconic song ‘Gimme Shelter’ by The Rolling Stones.

“Our data clearly shows that this song instantly makes any movie look crazy awesome,” announced Dr. Garrett Leonard, who led the elite team of scientists. “You lay down a bed of ‘Gimme Shelter’ under some choice lines of dialogue, you got yourself a bad-ass lookin’ flick.”

The study estimated that ‘Gimme Shelter’ has been used in nearly 10,000 movie trailers– mostly by director Martin Scorcese– but also indicated that, with its dramatic guitar riff and passionate vocals, the classic track could potentially give a film in any genre the intense feel of a gritty crime thriller.
“It could be a poorly written, goofy romantic comedy starring Jennifer Garner and the dude from Grey’s Anatomy,” Dr. Leonard said. “But you toss in Mick Jagger screaming ‘War, children,’ and just about everyone assumes that movie is going to deliver a sharp script, buttloads of action, and a sick cameo by Jack Nicholson playing a twisted mob boss. God, that song rules.”

Looks like a tour might be happening. Nothing solid yet of course, but some indicators. Ronnie has said publicly that The Stones are going into rehearsals in April. And Mick Taylor has postponed his April shows. Could be he's sick (though cancelling shows that far in advance would hint at serious illness, so I hope not), and it's not the first time he's cancelled/postponed shows. But unlike past shows, they're staying pretty hush-hush on why he's postponed them, only calling them "unforeseen events". And since it just happens to coincide with the rehearsals that Ronnie mentioned, it's pretty easy to jump to conclusions.

The Rolling Stones'** '50 and Counting' shows in London and New York last year were some of their tightest shows in years. "There have been quite a few offers," Mick Jagger said afterward, weighing a full tour. Added Keith Richards, "Really, all you're going to have to do is wait for an announcement."

The wait will be over soon. A concert business source confirms to Rolling Stone the band is planning 18 concerts in North America this year. Billboard also reported yesterday the band will play "fewer than 20" dates in North America in the first half of 2013, with Australian promoter Paul Dainty and Virgin music promoting the tour (the team also promoted the '50 and Counting' run.) It would be the band's first tour since 2005-2007's A Bigger Bang, and, if the '50 and Counting' shows were any indication, the band is even more adventurous these days. Last year they performed with former members Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, invited guests like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck** and played rarities like "Around and Around" and "I Wanna Be Your Man."

It's not a "new" release, but April 2nd they're putting out a new version of "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" 40th Anniversary Edition. I think the box set is well worth the $40-$45 you can get it for, but they're releasing a jewel case version of it for $20. Has all the same material, 3 CD's and 1 DVD. Though I'm guessing it doesn't come with the book, though some of it may appear in the booklet, or the mini poster replica.

If you don't have the 40th Anniversary version already, this is worth getting. The version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" on the second disc is well worth the $20 alone. The original album on the first disc is well worth that as well.

Also, there's finally a release date for "Crossfire Hurricane" in North America. It's coming out May 21st, and has some extras that aren't on the other international versions. I guess that's the reward for the long wait.

    crossfire_zps38d0254e.png

    Bonus Features:
-Cinema trailer for Crossfire Hurricane / Interview with director Brett Morgen/Additional bonus performances

-NME Poll Winners Concert 1964: (featuring Not Fade Away , I Just Wanna Make Love To You, I'm All Right)

-NME Poll Winners Concert 1965: (featuring Pain In My Heart, The Last Time)

-Live In Germany 1965: (featuring (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, I'm All Right)

-The Arthur Haynes Show 1964: (featuring I Wanna Be Your Man, You Better Move On)

Also, for Record Store Day the Stones will be re-releasing the "Five By Five" EP.

Some big announcement, probably a tour announcement, coming Wednesday. The only hint is a post on their website about an announcement coming, with this picture of a Stones sign at a Chicago L station...

If it is a tour announcement, I'm guessing the "You Get What You Need" sign in Chicago points to show(s) in Chicago.

There are people around here who paid twice that much for a copy of the Limited Edition PJ20 or white vinyl Backspacer. I'd go see The Stones for $160 probably, I don't know. They aren't coming here though, so I won't find out if I'd be willing to pay it.
