Now that I've listened to it from start to finish, I'm digging Leeds '82. Might have been the same tour, and very similar setlists, but a different vibe from Hampton, for better or worse. It's pretty sloppy at times, because on this leg they decided to play songs a lot faster, and Keith got a new guitar he was dicking around with, so he has a crunchier guitar sound. It's a good show to have. Especially since it was their last with Stu. I think that has a lot to do with them releasing it.
Nice. I have not gotten Toronto '05 yet. How is that one?

Well, I still feel like maybe an older show would have been the way to go with these Archives. Like I said when there was speculation about it, if they were going to release a club show from Toronto, why not the famous El Mocambo '77 Show? And I was admittedly not excited about it AT ALL. But it's actually really awesome.
Even though that tour was covered pretty well, the club show has a completely different sound/vibe. The arrangements are for a club setting, so they're not the same live versions we hear on The Biggest Bang, etc. So it's not tired at all. There is only one track that I don't like, 19th Nervous Breakdown. The arrangement is strange. I don't mind different arrangements, but it doesn't sound good. They play it at about 1/4 speed. A few of the highlights are Keith and Mick doing a duet of Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up", a cover of Otis Redding's "Mr. Pitiful", and Dead Flowers sounds great. Even the old standards sound pretty good and fresh compared to the stadium arrangements.
It's probably comparable to Shine A Light, since it was a small venue show as well. The setlist is shorter, but they sound fresher, and a little less polished. Less polished in a good way I mean, they sound more rock n roll and less "Hey, we're being filmed for a movie".

Rehearsal list from today is starting to look like a working setlist. I'd be pleased if this is the set at the Newark shows!

There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.
I've spent thousands on Stones tickets over the years (30 shows) and never regretted it. Due to work and my kids wrestling schedule, I'm only able to travel to one of these shows this year (Newark Dec 13) and can't wait!

Prices are very high, but the demand is matching it. There is no one to compare the Stones to. There has not been a band that has been touring at this level for this many years. I can understand Mick's frustration with seeing the secondary market taking huge profits on their tickets.
For these limited shows, I have no issues paying the prices, but can understand how others do.

I don't really know what to think of those prices to be honest. The thing is, I've never had high expectations out of the Stones, they've always been a pretty high dollar act. These tickets really go beyond anything in the past, but I kind of understand the rationale of just charging what the secondary market charges, that way there's really not much room to go up. But at the same time it screws the actual people who tried to buy tickets who aren't. So I don't know. If actually going to one of these shows were any kind of real possibility to me and I had to wrestle with the idea of paying that kind of money I might have a strong opinion on it.
On an unrelated note, though still Stones related, I made kind of a frivolous buy today. I was in Best Buy picking up a pair of headphones on my lunch break and they had a Stones display (on account of Grrr!), and I saw they had "Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)". Seeing as I have all the studio albums and several compilations, basically all of their work that's been released, it's a COMPLETELY redundant album for me to buy. If I were hell bent on it hearing it I could have just patched together a playlist. But it was probably one of my favorite albums in high school, when that was the only CD I had a lot of those songs on. So I guess it has sentimental value. I wore that CD out, literally. It was only $9.99, so I bought it. I also loved the artwork (especially the back cover) for some reason, so I'm glad I have it. I haven't owned it for like 13-14 years.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
Yeah, it was really the perfect comp for the teenage stoner I was at the time. Didn't care about the early stuff, didn't care about the blues stuff, I mainly was into that particular era. I wasn't even a big fan of songs like Brown Sugar back then.
By the way, I'm talking about the American version. I'm not crazy about the UK tracklisting. Mainly because You Better Move On (from the self titled 1964 EP) does not fit in at all with the rest of the songs. Sittin' On A Fence from '65 is kind of out of place too. The US tracklisting sticks to the Aftermath through Honky Tonk Women era.

I was reading a thread over at IORR that says Stu is not so much as even mentioned in Crossfire Hurricane. That's insane. I'm sure it's still a good movie, and Stu, as important as he was, is not what most people want to hear about I'm sure. They've heralded him so much over the years that I don't guess it's that important. And they did release his final show as one of the archives, and play on a tribute album to him. So I don't feel like they're disrespecting him, but it's kind of strange. Still can't wait to see it.

Passed on another sale had sections 19 and 120 in cart but both were still 1600 for a pair. Love the stones but they're absolutely gouging their fans on these ticket sales.

AGREED about Stu. I was shocked as well. That is only challenge #1 with this movie. Again, I loved this flick as I am a fan of most all things Stones... Challenge #2 was there wasn't nearly enough Wyman stuff and Taylors departure takes up a chunk (but not a definitive reason WHY?). Lots of the 1st 25 yrs, very light on the last 25.
Admittedly, my "Stones" love affair is the quadfecta of Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and my personal fave: "Exile on Main Street" To me those are "historic" and show the Stones as the kings of the world - maybe at their personal bests as well.
Once you see it SatansFuton, I'd love your thoughts...

Is there any stuff from the later era? I was reading some reviews, and they made it sound like the movie just ends at '82. There has been talk (and supposedly Mick hinted at it) that a second film will be released in the future covering the later part of their career.
As for Wyman, I'm kind of surprised there isn't a lot of Wyman, and then again I'm kind of not. They have sort of swept his involvement under the rug after he left, but in recent years seem to have warmed up to him. Such as inviting him to rehearsals and possibly to play at one, if not all, of the 50th Anniversary shows, and he joined the rest of the Stones to play on Stu's tribute album.
But given the way they airbrushed him out of the picture for the cover of "Rarities", it's not all that surprising.

I wish they would have given a definitive answer on what happened with Mick Taylor as well. There's so many conflicting stories about it. Even conflicting stories coming from the same people, Taylor included. I think it was complicated and lots of different things. He was having a tough time as an addict, he wasn't getting a lot of respect in the band, and he wasn't really allowed to flourish. And of course, as always with the other Stones, the question of songwriting credits.
I think it all came down the IORR sessions. Keith famously went off on Mick in one of the sessions and told him something like he was great live, but not worth a fuck in the studio. Keith thought Mick was playing too loud, and other stuff. I think one only need to listen to "Dance Little Sister" to see how Taylor was treated. And I'm sure when he heard that song he was pissed. He put down a GENIUS guitar track on that song, and in the final mix it is mixed so low and in the background you almost have to put on headphones to hear him. Yet Keith banging out 2-3 Open G chords non-stop from start to finish is at the forefront of the mix. The fact that Taylor quit the band at the IORR release party is probably the most telling thing, and why I think that song in particular may have played a large role.

Not very good. I watched it once and hated it, then went back and watched it a couple hours later, and still hated it. I prefer the video that's just the animated lyrics.

Yeah, it's genius. I've always loved it, but it took a while for the album as a whole to grow on me. I always loved Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Monkey Man and Live With Me, but it took a while before songs like Love In Vain, Let It Bleed, You Got The Silver, etc to grow on me so that I could enjoy listening to the album all the way through. Midnight Rambler I always liked, but the live version from Ya-Ya's/Hot Rocks has always sort of been the definitive version, and I would usually go to that if I wanted to hear it, instead of the studio version. I can listen to it from start to finish all day every day now.

It's got that funk rock, and that kind of bluesy, country twang sound all in one. Vintage Stones. Just absolutely love the opening riffs to Monkey Man - my head was bobbing the entire time.
And of course if Gimme Shelter doesn't produce some feelings within yourself, I don't know what to say. This song always makes me think of Martin Scorsese, and always the intro to The Departed now. :fp:

I know it's kind of corny, but I like that song. Anything off Black And Blue is cool with me.

Needless to say, the drive was very pleasant.

:fp:
