The PJ 20 hardcover book is AMAZING. I'm loving every single page. But...anyone else notice a distinct lack of Abbruzzese photos?? Simple oversight, or intentional?? Kinda weird...

100% intentional. I'm surprised he's mentioned as much as he is. The subject was pretty well off limits for the movie.

I know it wasn't the most amicable parting, but I'm surprised they STILL (or somebody still) harbors enough bad feelings to gloss over his contribution to PJ history. I mean, in 1995, okay, but 2011. Really?

(Haven't seen the movie yet, so can't comment on that part of this minor controversy...ha...)

I just find it weird how much they have shunned him. Especially after all these years.

They hardly show him in the book, and they have minimum footage from 93 and 94 in the movie. Blood is from the '95 tour. The movie is mostly about the first 5 years and all they went through, and Dave was a huge part of the whole story in those formative years. We all get the fact that Ed and Dave did not get along and they fired him along those lines, but the fact remains: Dave was every bit as important in the early years as anyone. It's pretty crazy that after all these years they couldn't rise above whatever went down and just let the story unfold while including Dave. There must be some really bad blood there.

I bet you there are NDAs in place over what happened.

I think you are projecting how much YOU think Dave meant to the band. In a group of five people he obviously was the black sheep of the group. He had to go, end of story... Move on. Plus who the he'll needs 15 fucking cymbals on their kit anyways? Some of those live recordings are hard to listen to with a damn cymbal crash every second.

You guys keep pictures of co workers past, ex gfs, ex bfs, former friends around???

Why should they? Its over folks. They lost a band member over the years, big deal. Most bands lose alot more or don't last 5yrs nevermind 20+

I think everyone just wants the juicy details of the split.

    I could care less

    1) Alive Guy
    2) The intros to both VS and Vitalogy.
    3) WMA
    4) He and Jeff jamming in Porch during unplugged
    5) The drum stick toss heard on the album at the end of RVM
    6) and on and on

I don't think his importance in those early years is being overstated. The fact remains that he was in the band as they were the biggest band in the world, and his departure was soon met by them NOT being the biggest band in the world. I realize they intentionally pulled back from the spotlight, and getting rid of Dave was a big part of that. But the movie was mostly about those years, and he was every bit as integral as any of the other guys. IMO at least.

So if someone wanted to know what my life was like in the 5 years before I met my current wife, I would just glaze over my girlfriend of 3 years?

I dunno, a few of the members had some pretty positive things to say about him in the book.
I really think it was a clash between type of rockstar he wanted to be vs. the type Ed wanted to be. Oddly enough I think he'd fit right in as far as that sorta stuff goes nowadays.

As far as there being NDA's or something of that sort I dunno, but I would guess Dave A would jump at the chance to just have some current connection to the band.

If your wife is present during that question then yes.
  • I haven't seen the movie or read the book, so I don't really know, but I don't think he's been redacted from Pearl Jam history. I know in the Orpheum booklet there is a cool picture of him (no other band members present) standing at the front of the bus, with the bus driver I think, and looking out the window. The inclusion of that picture makes me think they aren't trying to pretend he never existed.

I wouldn't think they would still have such hard feelings after all this time. I've held some serious grudges in my day, but over time they all sort of petered out and we were like "what were we thinking?" and hugged it out. I don't know what all happened in this relationship. I don't know if they minimize him because they dislike him, or maybe they aren't proud of the way it was handled. I don't know, but it is what it is I guess. WE know he was there, and how awesome he was, that's the important thing.

It's the fact that people have a hard time letting go of this issue. The band clearly doesn't need to air out it's dirty laundry like fuckin Van Halen or Aerosmith etc. Peoples relationships end, all the time. It's clearly not a Rey of sunshine. I respect Dave

But maybe just maybe Dave had a hand in his own demise

I do keep pictures of those who were once in my life, but are no longer. They're shoved away in a box in a closet, but if I were to do a book about my life, they would be included. It's personal history. And Dave A. IS a significant part of PJ history.

I don't even wish they focused on the "juicy details of the split" in the book (or movie)...I just was hoping for a little more acknowledgement of his time in the band and his musical/performance contribution. I don't care much for gossip, but I do want solid historical documentation. That's what they're giving throughout the book, and this just happened to be a facet of their history that they glossed over.

To be fair, I guess, they also glossed over Jack in the movie for the most part. They also don't go into why Dave K. left.

I really don't know how people don't understand this...

Dave didnt mesh great with the group, we know he broke a special guitar to Ed and didn't want to take responsibility for it. Probably the last straw, they fired his ass, he probably got a lawyer and sued the group, then a settlement, then NDAs. Get over it, move on like the rest of the group.

    That's not the point.

I am not saying they should have used the movie to vent about the situation. The fact remains: 75% of the movie is from 90-95, and Dave was integral in the band from 92-94.

I loved the movie, and for a band that has been around for 20 years, with thousands of hours of footage and dozens of great stories to tell, of course some stuff will get left out in a 2 hour movie. I'm just saying that completely ignoring any mention of Dave seems like a grudge they are still holding. Its all good. I am not complaining. I just think it's crazy they still seem reluctant to talk about it, at all.

  • Maybe it's him and not them. I'm sure its not just because they hold some grudge.
