Last Wednesday I went with my family to see Glen Hansard at the Moore Theater in Seattle and it was amazing. Being a fan of Glen since seeing him at the EV show last summer, I could not wait to see him. I met up with Marcus (Crazy Marcus) before the show and talked to him about how he was able to meet Glen and talk to him twice, have a picture taken with him and have his CD signed by him. So he told me he would try to help me meet Glen. After hours of waiting outside the theater I saw Mr. Hansard walking down the street. I shook his hand and told him how I couldn’t wait for the show and was able to get my picture taken with him. He was a super night guy and it was a perfect start to the show! The Moore Theater is a great venue, we had great seats and the sound was terrific. The opening band, The Lost Brothers, were really good. Had a folk sound and was a perfect opening band for Glen. Then, after much anticipation, Glen and his band hit the stage and started off with “The Storm, its coming.” After a rockin’ version of “Talking with the Wolves” the band played “Love don’t Keep me waiting” which was full of energy and had an awesome “Respect” tag at the end. After hearing the wonderful “Philander” and the classic “When your mind’s made up”, they covered Pearl Jam’s “Smile” which was awesome! Glen’s voice sounded amazing and you could tell he loved singing that song. Throughout the concert he would tell funny stories like getting his haircut and the upcoming Presidential Election. Not to mention he invited the people from the balcony to the stage for the rest of the concert. Next, came the awesome “Low Rising” and then a very inspirational version of “Bird of Sorrow” dedicated to Chris Pickles. “Song of Good Hope” was next, my favorite Glen solo song, and it was beautiful to hear as ever. Another highlight was after the encore when Glen busked “Say it to me now” and “Gold” It was so great to hear those songs live finally. And after a rockin’ version of “Astral Weeks”, the beautiful “In these Arms” and the coolness of “Paper Cup”, the band dived into my favorite Frames song, “Fitzcarraldo” everything about it was amazing, the music, Glen’s voice, the energy. Just fantastic. After a few more songs and covers the concert came to an end with a cover of “Passin’ Through” and it was so great because the whole band got off the stage, walk though the aisles, out the doors and continued to play in the streets of Seattle! Overall the concert was amazing. The band sounded so good, Glen’s energy and voice was perfect as ever and I loved the setlist. If you have the chance to see him, go and buy tickets now!

Awesome review Fixer! I'll just step on down from my usual show review soapbox and cede that now... I saw a great pic on Twitter of the street scene in Seattle, will try and send it over to you.

So I saw him on the final night of the tour in San Francisco ... on Saturday night ... and I hate to tell ya, they didn't wanna leave the stage.... Show started at 9pm with The Lost Brothers hitting some classic covers (Moonriver) and their own tunes for 40 mins, and Levon Helms' horn section came out with Glen on a tune. Sweeet start. Helms' men were there for most of Glen's set as well (and they played the Hardly Strickly Blue Grass Festival on Sunday in SF - Glen, them, the frames, etc)

Sets sound nearly identical, haven't read back to see if anyone mentions it -- 11-12 folks on the stage for most of the night! Violin, Viola, Cello, Keyboards, Bass, Drummer, Guitarist, Trombone, Trumpet/French Horn, Sax, and Glen .. and his roadie on occassion! I couldn't see who was playin steel drums on one tune, mighta been keyboards, but I was just cut off from Helms' men by the PA.

Glen unplugged and stepped to the front of the stage for 2-3 songs, then his violin player came out -- and they called up a couple that had just come from a wedding straight to the show! She was gorgeous in her white wedding dress, he in his tux. Glen grabbed the keyboardist's chair and sat her down, they turned and serenaded her! Beautiful, to his credit, the groom sang along to the whole song too ... so yeah, they were fans.

And they just kept going, brought the Lost Brothers back out for a full band tune, Corinna Corinna, brought a dude out who played in the upstairs cafe 'tween sets ... He was VERY Black Keys-y, Glen's drummer came out and thumped while he shredded.

Then everyone back out for a bit o BRUCE! 40 minutes of Lost Brothers, TWO HOURS AND FORTY-FIVE MINUTES of GLEN, and we all got Posters as we left!

Yeah, I stumbled away at 12:45 am!

Here's nice write-up I found looking for setlists:

As a long time PJ fan, I'm finally getting started on the forums. Thanks to all who share their stories, pics and to get reviews on music. I first saw Glen w/EV in Chicago. Then at PJ 20. Fantastic. Seems like the kind of guy who if he wasn't touring, would be down at the local bar, hangin' with the everyday folks and blending right in. He's a great storyteller, in song and person. Seems to wear his heart on his sleeve in such a genuine fashion, that's what I've really noticed. So, thanks Glen for all the great music, and thanks to all the posters who offer great insights...
It's amazing what you hear when you take time to listen.

  • Mini Review from Munich - Muffathalle

A cool little venue in a cool town. When I arrive there are signs up saying the show is sold out - amazing how Glen can continually do that without really doing any promotion at all!

    Highlights as follows:

    * Lisa Hannigan delights the crowd with her opening set - Knots and Little Bird in particular sound fab and Graham and Justin join her for a song - she gets a great response and sells plenty of cds after the show when she turns up at the merch stand to sign things.

    * Glen pitches up on stage shortly after and following the now standard opener (The Storm, It's Coming) they launch into Talkin With the Wolves. It is a treat for the ears - the lads are sounding really, really tight and I think that we are getting the benefit of the US tour 'warm up' - there is a clear difference between the sound of this track now compared to the Union Chapel gig - it is so much more dynamic and the crowd respond in kind. It's a great tune to draw people in and focus their attention.

    * Philander is introduced as a song about the first girlfriend you kissed and the feeling that after that event nothing else matters other than finding a private spot to re-live that moment - Glen notes that even a wardrobe or the shadow of a speaker looks tempting for the purpose

    * Before Bird of Sorrow (which STILL rocks my soul) Justin Carroll is introduced to the crowd as someone that Glen and the Frames guys had been watching playing Mingus tunes on Tuesday nights for a long time in Dublin - they are really happy that they've been able to nab him into the touring band. It's nice to see the Frames family expanding.

    * Just prior to Glen starting Backbroke solo there is an almighty grinding noise from the back of the hall - Glen soldiers on with the song introduction but eventually has to ask what it is and is told that it is the espresso machine at the bar - he then asks if someone can bring him one

    * The version of Please, Please, Please which is delivered is about as good as you are going to get for a white Irishman covering James Brown. As you might expect, the horns sound amazing on this track and it is jam-band central. There is a great vibe coming off the stage and it ebbs and flows through to the crowd - great stuff!

    * The trio of Fitzcarraldo, God Bless Mom and Star, Star are fab for us Frames fanatics - ohhhh I'm gagging for some more Frames tunes - could you guys not just drop in Santa Maria, Headlong or Red Chord? - puhlease

    * The Song of Good Hope is dedicated to the now Munich based Berny - great to see him at the show

    * As always the incredible off mic abilities of Glen and Colm in Say It To Me Now and Gold shine from the front of the stage - this shit never gets old to me and the crowd agrees with my assessment.

    * Lisa brings her uke on for a gorgeous duet with Glen of Blue Moon. Its melodic sweetness is pretty much the dessert to this musical cordon bleu and the after dinner glass of port is Bruce's Drive All Night which segues aptly into The Parting Glass.

Danke Munchen, Danke Glen, Danke Frames & Danke Lisa

  • Review from Vienna - Arena Wien

This is an even funkier venue than Munich - really you could easily visualise a place like this somewhere in a cool part of Berlin. When I read 'Arena' I imagined some over- commercialised venue (think O2 Arena in London) without any soul that simply did the job - of course this being Glen I should have known better (smacks myself on the hand!).

This show was sold out ages ago and there are plenty of people outside looking for tickets. I was a bit slow off the mark getting tickets but luckily I was able to get in touch with a gig angel who helped me out (you know who you are - thank you!).

I was remiss in my Munich review not mentioning the merch (OMG there is merch!) - how exciting is that? It wasn't quite the cool spread of Glen gear that the folks in the US had - so no scarves or hoodies but there were two different Glen t-shirts (the Silencio one and a new Glen Euro tour one which has an art kinda print of Glen's profile on it) together with a Euro specific poster (with the same profile print). Did I take pics of them? No - sorry - but I'm sure someone will come good with some shortly.

    Some tidbits from the show:

    * If you haven't seen the YouTube videos of the performances of Love Don't Leave Me Waiting with the strings and brass players then do yourself a favour and check it out. I first saw Glen play this song solo but with a 10 piece band it's like the song has been to Chanel and got itself a bitching outfit! It sounds so organic but polished - I am making any sense? How about this - song sound good yah!

    * Ahhh there is always one in the crowd isn't there? Someone who wants to make comments from the audience and just.....not....stop! Tonight it was a loud, tall admirer identified as Gary - he was funny the first time and Glen dealt with him well but the next 3 or 4 times it got a bit tiresome to the point where both the audience and Glen were begging him to "shut the fuck up"! Gaz, mate, it's cool to be enthusiastic but let's leave the comments to the man with the mic. I must say Gary did somewhat redeem himself later on in the night by acting as comedy sidekick to put off a woman continually begging for Falling Slowly when Glen had previously told her he wasn't going to play it without Mar - Gary's call of "It wasn't me" brought huge laughs. We forgive you Gaz!

    * The crowd were up for some singing tonight and Glen took it on board and had us providing backing vocals for Maybe I was Born to Hold You in These Arms and Backbroke. These small pieces of participation always go down well - it's about feeling as if you are a part of the proceedings and not just a punter who has simply paid their money to be entertained. They are very inclusive because even the most tone deaf audience member can give it a go. The classic axiom applies - the little things always count!

    * I find it hard to believe that I am ever going to be tired of hearing Glen's version of Astral Weeks. What I really like doing now is watching the faces of people in the crowd as Glen revs up to guitar-string breaking intensity - there are always a lot of open mouths, wide eyes and spontaneous smiles - I can't think that there is anything better for an artist than to see your onstage efforts translating into a physical response in your audience.

    * I love This Gift - I really do think it is one of the best songs Glen (with the help of Mar) has written in years (well other than Bird of Sorrow!) - around the insistent melody are the lyrics which shine out and speak to me personally for many reasons. I also know that they speak to a lot of people differently which is a great thing for a song and a songwriter.

    * After a Frames double-shot, Glen treats us to a personal Vienna-based story about 'stealing' a Ducati motorbike whilst drunk and managing to get around any resulting arrest and police trouble. It is of course much better when Glen tells it so you should check out the vid here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PDDScch6Ms&sns=em

I wonder who the 'mate" on the bike was? Ahem

    * Mark Geary is also in town and comes on to give us 'It Beats Me' with Glen and the lads. Mark apparently performed a gig at a private home the night before and due to noise restrictions the audience couldn't clap to show their appreciation so instead they gave a salute which looks more like straight jazz hands. The same action is adopted by the Glen and the audience when Mark appears and it's clear they are all having a great time - nothing like playing with your mates!

    * The night ends with a dedication to Mic Christopher via Forever Young - Glen, Mark & Lisa all share verses and it is a perfect illustration of the mateship in the room (and beyond!).

Thanks to all again for a great night!

I am surprised no one posted an update about the 2nd show in Dublin on 18 Dec, so here we go, a short but all encompassing summary: It took 4 hours ... and neither the band nor the audience wanted it to stop. When they started to get tired they just ordered a few pints on stage and went on and on and on. It was amazing.

This take is not perfect quality (thanks for posting anyway) but it is a great representation of the atmosphere (recorded at the end when all musicians including guests like the wonderful Lisa Hannigan and Liam O Maonlai joined the audience on the floor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRIPuSYP8wM :D

It's really cool that you liked the arena in Vienna...it truly is something completely different than its name would suggest. It's independently run by a cultural organization, and has been so since the start, the city has threatened to close it down various times but no success so far, thankfully! I wish I could've gone to that show, but it sold out really quickly.

2 weeks til Glen in London! so excited to see him & so many of the people I did the PJ and EV tours with again! :D

Saw Glen last night at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. He was fantastic, on for over 2 1/2 hours and full of craic.

EV got a wee name check when glen said his new uke was from 'the good man Vedder' who told him to go and learn some some on it. He also tagged one of his songs with 'i miss you already' from Smile.

It was a small hall and at the end he invited everyone down to stand in front of the stage while he sang a cover of a Leonard Cohen song.

Him and his band put on a hell of a show and they deserve all the success in the world
    Hail Hail
