I can't say I'm that familiar with all his work - but I saw him at the Seattle show (the night before yours Rico), and I thought he was top notch, first rate, world class, right up to the mark - phrases like that! Had Eddie not been coming on, and I had gone solely to see Glen Hansard, I might have been blown away - but I really did enjoy his set. I probably should get to know his work better. Any pointers for where to start?

Well I would say get the Swell Season's first album called The Swell Season...after that get The Frame's album Burn the Maps and then get the second Swell Season album called Strict Joy!

The guy is an absolute treasure. One of the best songwriters out there right now.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I hadn't gotten to see him before this weekend, and I was floored. he was amazing...so much raw power and emotion in his voice...and he looks like he has so much fun--which is always good to see! I was moved to tears during Falling Slowly with the random fan from the crowd :-)

Glen and Ed doing that song together on EV's solo tour was fantastic. I was like wow. Enjoyed "sleepless nights" too.

  • seems like a really nice guy. i think once was one of the best movies of the last decade, and have seen the swell season twice.

plus the fact that he's friends with damien rice and lisa hannigan is always a plus.

the last few years, in dublin, on christmas eve, bono, damien rice, glen and others all gather outside in the street and sing songs, christmas songs and each others songs. how cool would that be?
  • I was at the show that Glen referenced on Sunday. This was the show in Saratoga, CA. where a fan jumped to his death while the swell season performed. The person just barely missed landing on Glen. I along with everyone else in attendance was pretty traumatized by the event. I posted about it here on the forum, and I likened Glen's music to Eddie's solo material from Into the Wild. I had heard Glen mention Ed's phone calls at the shows in Oakland, in which Ed called him up to see how he was doing after the tragedy. I always wondered if Ed read my post, or if it was just coincidence.

good to see people taking an interest but the best way to experience what Glen does, apart from live is to get

    setlist-the frames (live record)
    for the birds- the frames
    dance the devil-the frames
    fitzcarraldo-the frames

then get the swell season stuff. I've been following glen and the frames for about 20 years and it's great to see him do so well but especially getting up there with ed and pj.

and those christmas gigs in grafton st, it's Glen put those together, not damien rice and certainly not Bono. just a heads up.

Incredibly talented musician. SO glad Ed had him open up for him on the Uke Songs tour, thanks to him I discovered another amazing artist!! Glen is so passionate when he performs, from solo stuff to Swell Season to The Frames- gotta love it!! He also happens to be just the nicest guy, had the pleasure of meeting him before Ed's Beacon 2 show!

i think The Frames are one of the best bands I have seen live... espec as its only ever in front of a couple of hundred people. Glen is a consummate singer songwriter and everything he is involved in shows touches of brilliance. His voice in "Leave" is nothing short of shuddering....

and Falling Slowly was our first dance when we got married....
  • We've posted reviews, setlists, videos and pics from Glen's sets at PJ20 on our Frames fansite here: http://www.orderinthesound.com/3-4-sept ... ic-theatre

While you're there, feel free to click around and fall into a rabbit hole filled with 20 years of Frames-y goodness!

there's a DVD of josh Ritter called live at vicar street and he talks about one night when he hung around with glen damien and Lisa playing guitar singing songs. That's fucking awesome!!!
