my question... why does a group of people predominantly from arid regions practice burial at sea? makes sense for nordic folk IMO... but not so much muslims... any islamic scholars care to explain?
did we have a submarine waiting to scoop up the remains below water for more nefarious disposal?
lets fuel the flames of conspiracy
I think the law states if no land burial is possible then sea is OK or something like that. Not that they practice burial at sea. No country would take his body so they had no choice to bury him at sea. I guess it also stops his resting place as a shrine.
makes sense
its just too bad only jesus has the power to dance on his grave now

I just have to say something to the comments about Bin Laden having been buried at sea according to Muslim tradition of immediate burial. That may be the case, but I saw some of the talking heads on CNN this morning (I wish I'd remembered who this particular person was, I believe some sort of a diplomat, of Islamic descent) who was saying that he was told by some other officials, you know, down the lane, of the US military or govt that the actual reason that the burial at sea took place was that the U.S. wanted to avoid the possibility of Bin Laden's burial site becoming some sort of a shrine to his life and beliefs...and so on. Think whichever you want. I wish that the first was true..but you know...doubts creep in.
I tried finding a video of it, but failed. Maybe if you search long enough on CNN you can see the actual remark..there a a thousand op eds on it, but couldn't' find the actual remarks.
I don't think there is any denying why they went ahead with the sea burial, the point they were making was that they decided to do the sea burial within 24 hrs in accordance with Islamic law.
ahhh..got it thanks for all who clarified
peace,

Hmm...I'm sure this won't be understood but I feel I need to write it down. I come in peace.
I find all of this cheering around Osama's death quite "funny". You are so happy as if the whole evil on this planet has been forever banished- instead it is your politics who is spreading it. Are you blinded by your internal and international politics and media...or maybe just in denial ?(it is much to handle...)
Without USA there would be no Bin Laden. It is USA who is always financing wars around the world and molding dictators with their double-standards and greed for resources. As long as those puppets play their game they can kill their local people and do what they want, no problems with morals, nothing. Then if they revolt, USA goes and sells weapons and all that is necessary to their enemies. How many wars were there in the name of democracy and peace? It's sad. And then I see people on TV waving American flags and shouting. Really sad. I am of course not supporting terrorism or any violence, but these cheers are like a pervert theater, you are no different then them, full of hate. But their countries are more and more messy, and they've got nothing to lose. The consequence is not just terrorism but the reign of fear and instability everywhere. I think it would be much better if you would just stop interfering. A lot of blame for the status quo is also on the hands of the corporations. Instead of asking why they act the way they do - you throw bombs. This way, nothing is going to change, it is just going to be worse and worse. But you go and wave that American flag, eat a hamburger, drink some Coke, watch some soap opera or royal wedding or what ever keeps you from thinking too much and have a nice day in your marvelous country of freedom and success. Sorry for sarcasm, but I feel like Americans as a nation are really easy to lead and you lack a lot of self-criticism.
Peace.
Stereotype, I actually do understand what you are saying and unfortunately our role in the world is something many citizens are very unhappy with.
This superpower thing the US has going needs to stop.
Stop borrowing money, stop lending money and aid, stop having our hands in everything that goes on.
Stop sending our children to die for others.
Let another country get called upon and the finger pointed at them that they are handling everything wrong. Let someone else take the blame. We are tired of being hated for something we can not even control...
Superpowers after super money.
Let America tend to its own needs... get the country back for its own citizens, those who are legal.
Tend to our own house, make our own products again... get American corporations back to American.
"marvelous country of freedom and success" ?
tell that to the small businesses that are failing and the millions of people unemployed.
America is falling like the rest of the world ... we are all very fragile not just the countries you call 'messy' with nothing to lose.
But Stereotype, my question for you is ....
what would you have the average person do to stop the US role in the world?
write their congressman... pardon me while I fall down laughing... no sarcasm intended
Gather in protest, violent or otherwise? We all know how that goes.... getting messier by the minute.
This thing is on a roll, it is worldwide, out of our control and it is everyone's problem.
Once it is broken perhaps then it can be fixed.
Maybe that has been the plan all along and it is not a US Plan it is a Worldwide Plan.
At which point I will be happy to be in a country that can take a back seat
but
I wonder who is driving
Pandi..I wonder who is driving too...all the time. I wonder if people in other countries believe that we can just say it's so and then it's so..as in, writing our representatives and congresspersons Maybe they do ?
It was my personal perspective, some thoughts that have crossed my mind (not sure anymore while I shared them). I can't answer every single post now...but I will answer PM-s, if somebody feels like continuing this debate.
I wish you would stay and have a conversation with us. Perhaps then you would have a more varied opinion of Americans. (but you're right, I do love coke and burgers..sorry fellow Americans, but I truly do)
peace,
jo

i think you are brave to post what you did and i understand where you may be coming from- I do understand some of your post in terms of the US's huge hand over the world and the too often maneouvering (sp?) and usage of other countries for greed - but that's not just the US. Most countries do it too, UK included.
I don't really think that the stuff about sitting and eating burgers was necessary, or the generalisation of all americans either. Like it's been pointed out, not all Americans were cheering last night and it is quite awkward and uncomfortable when you think of them as celebrating DEATH, which I don't think (or don't want to believe) is what they were doing.
At the same time you need to understand that SOME americans are happy because it's a symbolic victory. It offers a tiny bit of relief that justifies 9/11 and they are not celebrating DEATH as such but JUSTICE in the fact that a man who has caused the death of many, who had twisted and crazy ideas, has died. While I don't agree with killing people for killing others (I agree with StillHere's posts) I understand that they had to - if all the info we are being told is true - they had no choice but to kill him (and they also went in with intentions to kill too)
I don't think this is anything more than a symbolic victory and I think it could have worse repercussions on the world, particularly the US.
To those who are angry that people from outside the US are commenting on the situation and possibly even criticising it or whatever, well the USA is the "big brother" as someone called it, of the world. Wherever you go you see influences and interference from the US - and yeah a lot of the times that is a good thing, but sometimes it's not so good and just because I'm not from America doesn't mean I don't have the right to criticise or be angry at some of the decisions made by your government - since it affects huge amounts of the world, including my own country.
I understand the anger of many Americans, it's a sensitive topic and I think we all just need to wait and get all the details before people go and type all this judgemental and insensitive stuff on here.
Great post, thank you.
