I just have to say something to the comments about Bin Laden having been buried at sea according to Muslim tradition of immediate burial. That may be the case, but I saw some of the talking heads on CNN this morning (I wish I'd remembered who this particular person was, I believe some sort of a diplomat, of Islamic descent) who was saying that he was told by some other officials, you know, down the lane, of the US military or govt that the actual reason that the burial at sea took place was that the U.S. wanted to avoid the possibility of Bin Laden's burial site becoming some sort of a shrine to his life and beliefs...and so on. Think whichever you want. I wish that the first was true..but you know...doubts creep in.
I tried finding a video of it, but failed. Maybe if you search long enough on CNN you can see the actual remark..there a a thousand op eds on it, but couldn't' find the actual remarks.
They are both true. They buried him at sea within 24 hours to comply with Muslim tradition and to avoid creating a shrine.

i think you are brave to post what you did and i understand where you may be coming from- I do understand some of your post in terms of the US's huge hand over the world and the too often maneouvering (sp?) and usage of other countries for greed - but that's not just the US. Most countries do it too, UK included.
I don't really think that the stuff about sitting and eating burgers was necessary, or the generalisation of all americans either. Like it's been pointed out, not all Americans were cheering last night and it is quite awkward and uncomfortable when you think of them as celebrating DEATH, which I don't think (or don't want to believe) is what they were doing.
At the same time you need to understand that SOME americans are happy because it's a symbolic victory. It offers a tiny bit of relief that justifies 9/11 and they are not celebrating DEATH as such but JUSTICE in the fact that a man who has caused the death of many, who had twisted and crazy ideas, has died. While I don't agree with killing people for killing others (I agree with StillHere's posts) I understand that they had to - if all the info we are being told is true - they had no choice but to kill him (and they also went in with intentions to kill too)
I don't think this is anything more than a symbolic victory and I think it could have worse repercussions on the world, particularly the US.
To those who are angry that people from outside the US are commenting on the situation and possibly even criticising it or whatever, well the USA is the "big brother" as someone called it, of the world. Wherever you go you see influences and interference from the US - and yeah a lot of the times that is a good thing, but sometimes it's not so good and just because I'm not from America doesn't mean I don't have the right to criticise or be angry at some of the decisions made by your government - since it affects huge amounts of the world, including my own country.
I understand the anger of many Americans, it's a sensitive topic and I think we all just need to wait and get all the details before people go and type all this judgemental and insensitive stuff on here.
Hmm...I'm sure this won't be understood but I feel I need to write it down. I come in peace.
I find all of this cheering around Osama's death quite "funny". You are so happy as if the whole evil on this planet has been forever banished- instead it is your politics who is spreading it. Are you blinded by your internal and international politics and media...or maybe just in denial ?(it is much to handle...)
Without USA there would be no Bin Laden. It is USA who is always financing wars around the world and molding dictators with their double-standards and greed for resources. As long as those puppets play their game they can kill their local people and do what they want, no problems with morals, nothing. Then if they revolt, USA goes and sells weapons and all that is necessary to their enemies. How many wars were there in the name of democracy and peace? It's sad. And then I see people on TV waving American flags and shouting. Really sad. I am of course not supporting terrorism or any violence, but these cheers are like a pervert theater, you are no different then them, full of hate. But their countries are more and more messy, and they've got nothing to lose. The consequence is not just terrorism but the reign of fear and instability everywhere. I think it would be much better if you would just stop interfering. A lot of blame for the status quo is also on the hands of the corporations. Instead of asking why they act the way they do - you throw bombs. This way, nothing is going to change, it is just going to be worse and worse. But you go and wave that American flag, eat a hamburger, drink some Coke, watch some soap opera or royal wedding or what ever keeps you from thinking too much and have a nice day in your marvelous country of freedom and success. Sorry for sarcasm, but I feel like Americans as a nation are really easy to lead and you lack a lot of self-criticism.
Peace.
I will wave my flag because i'm proud to be American
I will eat that hamburger and drink my coke. I am American and take great pleasure in that. I didn't like the cheering in the streets either, but it wasn't the whole country.
I could go and make many accusations about Slovenia and its citizens but i know it's just one village idiot on here not the country.
For you to come here on this day and spout this nonsense makes me feel sorry for you more than anything.
Many americans were affected beyond words on 9-11. Today is one good day for them, the pain will go on...no need to poke fingers at us on this day.

Some reports are saying that they wanted Saudi Arabia to take the body but they refused. Burial at sea probably was the best option for the reasons you stated. Good post on the one above too

I find it somewhat odd that this thread is posted on an American rock band's site that strongly opposes almost every thing listed

Wait a minute, this is way too thought-out and rational
I understand the U.S. is not perfect, and I can understand people not liking us for a number of reasons, but isn't the blind hatred and constant nitpicking of everything we do kind of old hat? We are the country that people love to hate, but as others have pointed out, we are not the only country who has misbehaved. No country is squeaky clean, but they would rather focus on our wrong doings, or what they perceive to be wrong doings, than address themselves. The OP says we lack self-criticism, I didn't see anything in the post except for criticizing others, and being pretty rude about it in the process.
Let us not forget that after 9/11 everybody had our backs on going against Osama, NATO declared 9/11 an attack on all NATO nations, and the French newspaper Le Monde famously said "Today We Are All Americans". I don't think nearly as many people would have had a problem with this sort of reaction had it occurred before later events such as the Iraq War jaded everybody. Anti-American sentiment has been at an all-time high since Iraq, and while it may be deserved, it leads to people blindly hating us instead of hating us for a good reason sometimes.
People like the OP hate us anyway, if it hadn't been people cheering over Osama being dead it would likely be something else getting his/her goat. And as it has been pointed out, we are held to a double standard, and even when we do something good, we can't win. People wonder why we get so defensive, and it's because it's a constant stream of BS focused at us no matter what. If we ignore them and act like we don't care they will say that we are being typically arrogant Americans, if we defend ourselves then we are being Ugly Americans. It just gets old after a while, and while people do make some good points about us, it is often lost in the constant stream of nitpicking and hate.
As for the post being "brave". It's the internet. Now if somebody marched into that crowd of cheering people and said all of this, that would be brave (and ill advised), but posting an anti-American rant on a message board for a rock band is not exactly bravery. I support the OP in saying what's on her mind, doesn't mean I have to agree with it. And I might have paid a little more attention if it hadn't been for the stuff about Soap Opera's and the other stereotyping. It really destroyed any chance of the message being taken seriously. If anything it was more a troll post, and was clearly designed to get a negative reaction.

I don't think there is any denying why they went ahead with the sea burial, the point they were making was that they decided to do the sea burial within 24 hrs in accordance with Islamic law.
He was not going to be taken alive they told hi's forces to put down their weapons they refused the Seals gave them the option of being taken into custody Osama was never going to be taken alive .....
like someone mentioned here already..cant't take the risk of him getting out of jail on some bullshit like the airplane bomber
he couldn't go into general population because he would be murdered
so jail for him would have been a peacful vacation for the rest of his life
fuck that
There is no way he would have been let out like that bomber. No way.
You say jail would have been a vacation I think he would have preffered death over jail in the US. For him and his organization it would have been the most demoralising and humiliating. But like I said, the information we could have gotten from him may have helped to save lives in the future, that alone means it was worth capturing him alive.
he would have never given info ..and like i said he wouldn't have been put in a regular jail with hardened criminals
he would have been in protective custody by himself
so like i said a lonely vacation ...
i post on the board of a band that doesn't exsist anymore .......i need my head examined.......
By the way, I'd like to mention that I'm happy to read opinions of people who live somewhere else besides America. It's nice to get a different perspective every once in a while.
Although the part about burgers & Coke & soap operas (what, USA is the only country with soap operas or junk food?) was kind of disconcerting. I haven't had soda in years, although burgers are pretty yummy.

Thank you. I found that bit about locking the thread so non-Americans couldn't post a tad insulting. Because I am not American I can't have an opinion?? Oh and being called an idiot  I have lots of American friends and I don't find any of them to be the, pardon the pun, stereotyped American.
Canada doesn't actually have their own soap operas but have you ever seen Canadian TV??? Most of it is goddamn awful.

In that case the OP should probably take her own advice about self-criticism and and instead of talking about how Americans are "easy to lead" should look at how the media has formed her opinion about Americans for her.

I DO know...or rather I do know who we were TOLD was responsible. Maybe responsibility lies there. It's been claimed. Do you recall that we were also told that it was the fault of Sadam? Yes.. I remember that well. Excuses for war. We are told a lot of things. I suppose 9-11 was proudly claimed by Bin Laden and his followers. That is not my point. I am very sorry that so many lives were lost. It is horrible. I cried my eyes out then. I still do. However, my convictions do not change with the circumstances. If they did, would they be convictions at all? I don't believe in an eye for an eye. I know half the world wanted him dead. I know its very personal and gut wrenching. I get that. I'm angry...we all are...and we should be. But I say if the elimination of another life were the solution, it were up to me, I couldn't do it. And I don't believe in it. What purpose does the killing of another person serve? Does it bring back our loved ones? It certainly does not. It may satisfy some urge for revenge, and that's it. That's all. I think he needed to be caught, imprisoned for life. Hard time. Yes. I think he should pay for his crimes. I just don't know how taking any other life justifies anything. I mean, isn't it the most contradictory thing a person can possibly ever do? How can you say...OH (and I'm not talking bin laden, I'm talking anyone) that person has killed a person..so I will now kill them. Doesn't that make you exactly the same? Give me all the "its not the same thing" arguments. But when it comes down to it, right down to it..it IS the same thing. And I don't understand it. Never have. I'm a lot older than most of you. Had friends who fought and died in the Vietnam war and continuing on.....and I've never agreed with any of it. Never will. I'm entitled to that opinion just as you are entitled to yours. Disagree. You're entitled. I thank goodness for our freedoms. And I know you all will say that in order to gain those freedoms we had to fight...and kill. You don't have to agree with me. That's the meaning of democracy.
I know I got off track. but ...there it is...bombs away...lemme have it. Doesn't change a thing.
I have no problem with your opinion, but I think you're missing one point: They couldn't have arrested him and taken him prisoner because he resisted. One guy there used a woman as a human shield, for God's sake. Killing him was the only option.
Johnny...Its not so much the killing that I'm appalled with (although I am)..we do it all the time. I resigned myself long ago, and didn't you too? ... that capture or kill meant kill...whether circumstances dictated it or not...what I"m lamenting is the absolute RAPTURE over his death. I can't fathom why the death of anyone by our own two hands is cause for celebration.

I am not happy about it, it's another chapter in a tale of sorrow. His death won't change what happened, but may provide some sense of closure or justice to some people. I believe he will answer to a higher judgement.
I will never celebrate anyone's death.
I am glad I live in a place that people are free to express their reactions, even if it's different from mine. And I will defend their right to do that.
I don't agree with the conflicts that our armed forces are involved in, but I do support the people in the armed forces that defend our country and freedom.
I do think we could tone down and show some humility instead of celebrating like we just won the superbowl, it makes Americans look arrogant instead of proud.

our soaps are far inferior to mexican telenovelas
no one should be taking this personally... let the rest of the world think what they will... i for one am just happy to have news that the pundits cant easily distort with their partisan bullshit
i think you are brave to post what you did and i understand where you may be coming from- I do understand some of your post in terms of the US's huge hand over the world and the too often maneouvering (sp?) and usage of other countries for greed - but that's not just the US.
I think that was my favourite post, thank you.
it's just how i feel on the topic, woke up to it the first thing in the morning and it's been on my mind most of the day
I am not happy about it, it's another chapter in a tale of sorrow.
I do think we could tone down and show some humility instead of celebrating like we just won the superbowl, it makes Americans look arrogant instead of proud.
let me tell you this,,i think me and you has more or less the same opinion in the laden death,i read your post so far..i know the OP in person..she is not a hater or something..believe me....MEDIA outside USA play their role..as inside USA ..filtre the news the way you like...guide people...some of them make people believe muslims are evil and we all feel americans like french said...but some other guide people that Americans, eat coke, and hamburger and are stupid... its so easy to guide people to hate or love...
ill tell u this..some .Greek chanels in tv can make you hate or love American even you havent never met one..
In that case the OP should probably take her own advice about self-criticism and and instead of talking about how Americans are "easy to lead" should look at how the media has formed her opinion about Americans for her.
That's what I was thinking. I would love to hear a well, thought out response from the original poster. One that does not include insulting stereotypes about the citizens of the country that just killed the most wanted man in the world.

They are both true. They buried him at sea within 24 hours to comply with Muslim tradition and to avoid creating a shrine.

While I don't agree with killing people for killing others (I agree with StillHere's posts) I understand that they had to - if all the info we are being told is true - they had no choice but to kill him (and they also went in with intentions to kill too)

this cracked me up so much it almost makes the rest of the thread worth it.
-my dad after hearing Not for You for the first time on SNL .
Good post on the one above too
I think that was my favourite post, thank you.
+1
I find it somewhat odd that this thread is posted on an American rock band's site that strongly opposes almost every thing listed
Wait a minute, this is way too thought-out and rational

I don't think there is any denying why they went ahead with the sea burial, the point they were making was that they decided to do the sea burial within 24 hrs in accordance with Islamic law.
he would have never given info ..and like i said he wouldn't have been put in a regular jail with hardened criminals
he would have been in protective custody by himself
so like i said a lonely vacation ...
