look at stats that show the % of americans who believe obama was not born in the US (birthers) or the % of americans that don't believe in global warming ... that's a beginning ...
well the fact that Op doesn't choose to respond shows she just wanted to ruffle some feathers. Hope she is proud.
It was my personal perspective, some thoughts that have crossed my mind (not sure anymore while I shared them). I can't answer every single post now...but I will answer PM-s, if somebody feels like continuing this debate.
I stand behind my words what concerns the US political and military moves and all. Don't get me wrong - I feel deeply sorry for all who lost their loved ones in 9/11 but also I do not believe that American life is worth more than any other. In Iraq and Afghanistan much much much more than 3000 civilians died and you can't blame such things on media portrayals of US. My point was more around these interventions and questionable motives.
That's all it was - an opinion - the Coke thing yeah, a little provocative plus the point was not there. I admit it was under the belt (I should have wrote something more inspiring instead of something not-fruitful for a discussion - but I get so angry about world politics (of course also European) and where this world is going...Profit driven all the way. It's sickening. And mostly the people (all around) are not critical and mostly passive. I can say for myself, I do my best not to be like that. And trying understand others' point of view is part of my education (social and cultural anthropology).
I apologize for burgers again - maybe we can talk about that in another topic (anybody watched Food Inc.?)
Stereotypes - If you think you don't have them or it is even possible not to have them - read Piaget and his work on cognitive psychology. My nickname is not about that though, it is more musical oriented - Stereo - type. And of course I don't think all people in America are the same (one of my best friend's studied in Harvard and is now my classmate and I know two professors from USA - hate to disappoint you but they probably have even more critical outlooks on your politics).
I appreciate your answers - the one about me having to question our media and my own view on USA was the valid one. The topic today was connected to your country, which doesn't mean I don't have as critical views on the situation in my country. Also I think much of my view was shaped by books (Chomsky, Žižek etc etc).
Peace.

I understand the U.S. is not perfect, and I can understand people not liking us for a number of reasons, but isn't the blind hatred and constant nitpicking of everything we do kind of old hat? We are the country that people love to hate, but as others have pointed out, we are not the only country who has misbehaved. No country is squeaky clean, but they would rather focus on our wrong doings, or what they perceive to be wrong doings, than address themselves. The OP says we lack self-criticism, I didn't see anything in the post except for criticizing others, and being pretty rude about it in the process.
Let us not forget that after 9/11 everybody had our backs on going against Osama, NATO declared 9/11 an attack on all NATO nations, and the French newspaper Le Monde famously said "Today We Are All Americans". I don't think nearly as many people would have had a problem with this sort of reaction had it occurred before later events such as the Iraq War jaded everybody. Anti-American sentiment has been at an all-time high since Iraq, and while it may be deserved, it leads to people blindly hating us instead of hating us for a good reason sometimes.
People like the OP hate us anyway, if it hadn't been people cheering over Osama being dead it would likely be something else getting his/her goat. And as it has been pointed out, we are held to a double standard, and even when we do something good, we can't win. People wonder why we get so defensive, and it's because it's a constant stream of BS focused at us no matter what. If we ignore them and act like we don't care they will say that we are being typically arrogant Americans, if we defend ourselves then we are being Ugly Americans. It just gets old after a while, and while people do make some good points about us, it is often lost in the constant stream of nitpicking and hate.
As for the post being "brave". It's the internet. Now if somebody marched into that crowd of cheering people and said all of this, that would be brave (and ill advised), but posting an anti-American rant on a message board for a rock band is not exactly bravery. I support the OP in saying what's on her mind, doesn't mean I have to agree with it. And I might have paid a little more attention if it hadn't been for the stuff about Soap Opera's and the other stereotyping. It really destroyed any chance of the message being taken seriously. If anything it was more a troll post, and was clearly designed to get a negative reaction.
+1
Also, just a couple of quick points.
1. Although I was certainly not dancing in the streets or celebrating, I think the idea of symbolism is really lost on a lot of people. It's not celebrating a death, as much as celebrating an idea or a feeling. It's getting closure and recognizing someone who finally had to pay for the heinous crimes he committed. I don't think it's absurd to appreciate the importance there.
Of course, I'm sure there's some people that are indeed celebrating simply because he's dead. Even so, overgeneralizing a country with a few hundred million people in it isn't very fair either.
2. Another thing I don't understand is all the questions about how killing him wasn't the answer and how he should have been captured. While I'm not really sure how I feel either way, I would hope people would consider the situation.
I don't know what happened during this firefight, but I'd be fairly confident to say that bin Laden wasn't sticking his arms in the air and screaming for surrender. I would think him and his followers would be fighting back regardless of what was transpiring. Also, I think it's also fair to say he's not exactly going to be spilling all his intimate secrets for anybody. What would be his motivation? I'd doubt a plea bargain would be in order in this case...
Point being, I think death was really the only endpoint of the situation.

Saying that others also have stereotypes does not make it right for you to stereotype. That is all I care to write about the subject now that I see you are willing bash Americans based on your knowledge of a few American friends and one movie.

Instead I should get to know every American and then I will be able to have my opinion? Have you read perhaps Benedict Andersen and Imagined Communities?
I am not saying I have the right to stereotype but that it is something inevitable. Read Piaget.

Hmm...I'm sure this won't be understood but I feel I need to write it down. I come in peace.
I find all of this cheering around Osama's death quite "funny". You are so happy as if the whole evil on this planet has been forever banished- instead it is your politics who is spreading it. Are you blinded by your internal and international politics and media...or maybe just in denial ?(it is much to handle...)
Without USA there would be no Bin Laden. It is USA who is always financing wars around the world and molding dictators with their double-standards and greed for resources. As long as those puppets play their game they can kill their local people and do what they want, no problems with morals, nothing. Then if they revolt, USA goes and sells weapons and all that is necessary to their enemies. How many wars were there in the name of democracy and peace? It's sad. And then I see people on TV waving American flags and shouting. Really sad. I am of course not supporting terrorism or any violence, but these cheers are like a pervert theater, you are no different then them, full of hate. But their countries are more and more messy, and they've got nothing to lose. The consequence is not just terrorism but the reign of fear and instability everywhere. I think it would be much better if you would just stop interfering. A lot of blame for the status quo is also on the hands of the corporations. Instead of asking why they act the way they do - you throw bombs. This way, nothing is going to change, it is just going to be worse and worse. But you go and wave that American flag, eat a hamburger, drink some Coke, watch some soap opera or royal wedding or what ever keeps you from thinking too much and have a nice day in your marvelous country of freedom and success. Sorry for sarcasm, but I feel like Americans as a nation are really easy to lead and you lack a lot of self-criticism.
Peace.
Stereotype, I actually do understand what you are saying and unfortunately our role in the world is something many citizens are very unhappy with.
This superpower thing the US has going needs to stop.
Stop borrowing money, stop lending money and aid, stop having our hands in everything that goes on.
Stop sending our children to die for others.
Let another country get called upon and the finger pointed at them that they are handling everything wrong. Let someone else take the blame. We are tired of being hated for something we can not even control...
Superpowers after super money.
Let America tend to its own needs... get the country back for its own citizens, those who are legal.
Tend to our own house, make our own products again... get American corporations back to American.
"marvelous country of freedom and success" ?
tell that to the small businesses that are failing and the millions of people unemployed.
America is falling like the rest of the world ... we are all very fragile not just the countries you call 'messy' with nothing to lose.
But Stereotype, my question for you is ....
what would you have the average person do to stop the US role in the world?
write their congressman... pardon me while I fall down laughing... no sarcasm intended
Gather in protest, violent or otherwise? We all know how that goes.... getting messier by the minute.
This thing is on a roll, it is worldwide, out of our control and it is everyones problem.
Once it is broken perhaps then it can be fixed.
Maybe that has been the plan all along and it is not a US Plan it is a Worldwide Plan.
At which point I will be happy to be in a country that can take a back seat
but
I wonder who is driving

No, instead you should not generalize all Americans into one broad group. You don't need to keep naming authors I should read. I already know what you are talking about and it does not make it right.

Stop voting Rebublican or Democrat would be a start in the same way people in the UK should stop voting for Labour or Conservatives. Same politicians that are only interested in money for the top 1% and not your best interest at heart. It won't solve the problems over night by any stretch but I think it's a good start.

So then just keep voting the corrupt politicians. The reason they can take so many liberties is that they keep getting voted in. I don't know what your political allegiance is but do you believe either of those parties are working in your best interest and not the bankers and themselves etc? Maybe you believe the current system is the best, I don't know. Your free to chose of course.
If you stop voting for them because of X, Y and Z then you force the parties to adapt. Given the fact that world nearly went tits up with the recent financial crisis this point may have carried a bit more weight I would have thought.
my question... why does a group of people predominantly from arid regions practice burial at sea? makes sense for nordic folk IMO... but not so much muslims... any islamic scholars care to explain?
did we have a submarine waiting to scoop up the remains below water for more nefarious disposal?

I think the law states if no land burial is possible then sea is OK or something like that. Not that they practice burial at sea. No country would take his body so they had no choice to bury him at sea. I guess it also stops his resting place as a shrine.

hey, i'm not saying you're wrong... i'm just saying this country as a whole will never be self-aware enough to see the need for a 3rd party
we all grew up with hollywood movies... theres good guys and bad guys... thats why we can get behind this osama death... good guys win... black and white... throw in candidate number three (who usually tries to walk too fine a line between dem and rep stances and ends up with only an army of hippy college kids) and our formulaic media equation gets thrown off balance
besides, third party candidates end up feeding out of the same trough anyway
Stereotyping is wrong but a lot of them are from elements of truth don't forget.

It won't solve the problems over night by any stretch but I think it's a good start.
thats like agreeing with your college class to all intentionally fail on an exam so you get A's with the curve... you know you're gonna have that one fucking kid that tries and ruins it
or in america's case, a majority of backassward inbred swamp/hill people

So then just keep voting the corrupt politicians. The reason they can take so many liberties is that they keep getting voted in. I don't know what your political allegiance is but do you believe either of those parties are working in your best interest and not the bankers and themselves etc? Maybe you believe the current system is the best, I don't know. Your free to chose of course.
If you stop voting for them because of X, Y and Z then you force the parties to adapt. Given the fact that world nearly went tits up with the recent financial crisis this point may have carried a bit more weight I would have thought.
did we have a submarine waiting to scoop up the remains below water for more nefarious disposal?
lets fuel the flames of conspiracy

most muslim majority nations have access to coastline (ocean) ...
I think the law states if no land burial is possible then sea is OK or something like that. Not that they practice burial at sea. No country would take his body so they had no choice to bury him at sea. I guess it also stops his resting place as a shrine.
The act of stereotyping, not the username Stereotype.

Stereotyping is wrong but a lot of them are from elements of truth don't forget.
No smoke without fire
we all grew up with hollywood movies... theres good guys and bad guys... thats why we can get behind this osama death... good guys win... black and white... throw in candidate number three (who usually tries to walk too fine a line between dem and rep stances and ends up with only an army of hippy college kids) and our formulaic media equation gets thrown off balance
besides, third party candidates end up feeding out of the same trough anyway
back to osama... USA USA USA

That is a good one. I'm a white person who loves both of those things.
