Project #10 - The Ascending Road Ahead: No Code Live

TheRealDanPatchTheRealDanPatch Posts: 1,854
edited April 2011 in The Porch
After a short break Myra, Tremors, Electricxlovex, and myself thought it was time to tackle the "No Code" album. "No Code" is the only studio album that the Projects team has not given the "live" treatment to, and we figured that we would save the best for last.

Here are some parameters that we would like to go by for this project:

-All songs must be from the 1996 Tour.

-We will add 3-4 bonus songs at the end, which will be covers/B-sides/Improvs from the 1996 Tour.

-Best SQ as possible.

-Repeat Shows and Venues will be allowed for this Project.

-No songs from the other Pearl Jam studio albums will be considered for bonus tracks.

Please feel free to use this thread to make suggestions and give us feedback as to what would be good to include on this new compilation (and what wouldn't be good). I will be updating the working track list for this project on the front page of this thread (right here). Our plan is to slowly start putting this together on Monday (April 18th) and have it completed and ready for download by or before next Saturday (April 23rd).

Please feel free to check out our other projects as well:

1996 is a tough year for this sort of thing because it's hard to hit up anything but the Berlin show as far as sound-quality goes. I guess I'll nominate "Present Tense" from the Hartford 10/2/96 show.
    2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. Hartford is a great sounding. You're right though, tough b/c this tour didn't produce a lot of SB shows. We may have to use quite a bit of material from Berlin, Hartford, Bridge, and filler from Barcelona and Toronto.

This project may be very similar to the "Yield" project that we did a few months ago. We did not have a lot of SB material for that compilation.

That's a good question about soundcheck. It's been along time since I listen to it. I will give it a listen when I get home from work tonight and see.

    Nice!!

The second soundcheck attempt at I'm Open is probably better in sound quality, from around the 10:42 marker

We had quite a few good suggestions, but this one just seemed to capture the feeling and theme for this project. Great Job.

We may try to broaden our horizon with Hamburg - April 4th, for Smile.
I thought it was decent sounding and an all-around nice version of it. Barcelona sounds softer but the sound, however possibly a bit clearer, is also much lower.
Hard to judge the SQ now that we've been spoilt on good one for the latest projects. It seems we don't have many shows to pick up from eventually. :(

aaaaah i'm having so much fun already :D

In my tree is one of my favorite too, along with Smile and Hail hail :D

Really like the Toronto one, although I tend to like the Berlin In my tree better, I reckon, especially the drum intro to it.
But I might be partial to this show : first time (to my knowledge) that a PJ show was broadcasted live on the radio around here. It felt really special :). I had it on cassette and have listened to it for years. Aah, good times ...

    As for bonuses :

Not a lot of to choose from this time :| .

B/sides : we've got Wash and Footsteps, but both sort of belong to Ten rather than No Code.

Covers : really nice Hunger Strike from Berlin, but it's a "sample" :(
Roadhouse blues from Paris is fun !! Abridged version too, though.

On a more positive note : 2 very sweet improvs IMO.
That from Charleston has got a "Fallin' down" feeling to it. Although nothing can beat the actual "Fallin' down" of course.
The instrumental one from Barcelona is kind of long, but I really like it. A bit weird. Would have suited the Vitalogy project too. :)

We may have to do some more Improvs for this vs. covers. I know that "Leaving Here" has been covered on The Who collection, but it should definitely be included as an Bonus song on this project.

Here are some good suggestions that have been posted on this thread that I haven't used yet....

    Thoughts/opinions?

    Mankind - Barcelona

    In My Tree - Toronto

    Hail Hail from Letterman

    Sometimes from Bridge school 2

    Smile - Hamburg

    Charleston Improv

    Barcelona - Instrumental

My opinions on some of these tracks are:

Mankind - Barcelona = Love this version (and Boot), but not sure if it's the right one.

Sometimes from Bridge school 2 = I think that Night 1 sounds better.

Hail Hail from Letterman = Although this is my favorite version of this song, it has been used on another "No Code" compilation and I am just a little hesitant on using it for this project.

    http://dp-rearviewmirror.blogspot.com/2 ... -live.html

Smile - Hamburg = Is the SQ up to par with Toronto & Barcelona?

The SQ is not great, and it really is a sample or a tease more than a proper cover. But it's still fun and, well, it's Roadhouse Blues !

Great to see such great suggestions being made already. Good stuff!

Unfortunately I am having one of those 'life getting in the way of online fun' days today, so I will have to join in this thread from tomorrow. Looks like we are already making good progress.

See you all tomorrow - looking forward to it

I'm through with Leaving here, I guess.
And the winner is .... Hartford. :| Could have jumped right to this one in the first place.

About the ending of it though : I think we can keep the 'random guitar ending' part of it, but, if I'm not mistaken, that's the version where he announces some "serenade" or something. So, unless we fit a soft improv' right after it, I reckon we should cut the very last bit off.

About the "random guitar" thing : it might work well with the Roadhouse Blues tease, should we want to include it right before Leaving here.

I sort of hoped for a 'thankyougoodnight' or a 'iloveyoualltakecare' or even a 'we'llcomebackverysoon' at the end of Leaving here. Don't recall hearing any in the versions I listened to (all of them).

    Hey tracklist looks good already

Hail Hail - I think it might be better to leave the Letterman version. Heard that one a lot, maybe a different one? Might fit in better with all the rest SQ- wise

the versions of Habit and In My Tree look good too :D those two were great ones
I'll have a listen for a "Red Mosquito" we could use - even though it's possibly my least favourite song off the whole album. Something about it- it's like the "Wishlist" of No Code. But maybe listening to it repeatedly will open my eyes (and ears)

No, no Red Mosquito is not No Code's Wishlist !! (ok, it's my least favourite too).

Sorry, wanted to check on Mankind but couldn't, I had to get ready for tonight and now I have to run (though I'm an hour late, so it's not THAT bad).

I'll see where you guys have got to when I'm back and try to contribute some more tonight (if I'm not too drunk, I don't think we really need drunken suggestions, do we ?).
