Give "Know Your Rights" from Uniondale a listen. This was the show where a bunch of turds started booing Eddie. This version of this song is particularly fired up and angry. Let me know what you think.

It suits the song quite well. :D The difference with the Tokyo version is ... striking  .
I'm not so keen on the Japanese boots. Wherever is the crowd ??

    +1

The Japanese Boots sound like studio recordings. Don't get me wrong the band is on fire, but the crowd....

    Meh...

I guess that I am too spoiled listening to those European Boots for the last (almost) 20 years. The lack of crowd participation just doesn't do it for me. It's like that old saying about masterb.... nevermind.

Anyway, if the people on this board want the Japanese boots to be represented, then who am I to say no that they can't be. I just think that a crowd has the power to make an average into a great show, and to make a great show into an average show.

Yeah I agree - it's a different atmosphere - but I find there is a certain raw desperation in the performances which you never get when playing to the home crowd. Like the band has said about the song Alive - it started as desperation, but has become a triumphant anthem over time by the power of the live shows and audience reaction. I think Pearl Jam playing their home turf has the power to turn even their darkest songs into anthems - and in the case of Riot Act in particular, that is not what I hear the album to be about - it is quite introspective for me, quite spiritual, and there is a fragility in the studio performances which it is difficult to capture live in front of an adoring crowd. I think this is why I have always got a lot from the Japanese bootlegs - the fact that the crowd aren't there to cheer on every note - and the band are kind of on their own with the songs.

I've listened to a bunch of others, but they sound a bit too much like the studio version IMO. This one (obviously) has a nice spin to it.

Save You from Mexico 17/07 is amazing. Eddie really takes a while to warm his throat up to reach those last 2 notes, but on here, it's effortless.

Trying to find a really good Half Full

Half Full from Atlanta 19/04 is a little different.

Great solos from Mike, Matt is a little more subdued and Ed is improvising a little at the end, finishing with "It's up to You" after all the "Won't someone save the world," and vocal improvs.

You mean Don't be shy from Boise 2000 ? :shh: :silent:

j/k, I reckon it was played in 2003. Don't know if it'll fit with where we want to go with this project though.

    Trouble wasn't played in 2003.

Not much love for Fortunate Son out there so far, but I Won't Back down from Missoula 28/05 is unreal!

I reckon I won't back down would be a better alternative than Don't be shy.

Even though we'll HAVE TO include Don't be shy in one of the projects... ;)

Don't Be Shy was played in Tokyo and we have had a request for this version earlier in the thread ;)

But our covers so far have a kind of theme, and I won't back down would fit well. Is it not on the list already??

I think we should cram in as many covers as possible with this one - seeing as we have so much material this tour

I like Mexico City a little better. There is a small "mistake" in lyrics but otherwise this version is great.

Wow, thanks for your efforts Mocik !

    Edit :

Have listened to both. They're really great. I agree with you on Mexico City. I think I like this one better too. It's trippy ! Much much more so than the studio version.

    Glad you like them :D

I'm tending to agree that Don't Be Shy wouldn't fit so well with the other covers, and agree that I won't back down would be excellent - I seem to remember there were some amazing versions of this song on the tour.

I have to go off an do a bit of work for a while :( , but will be back late afternoon to see where we have got to.

Thanks for the suggestions folks - is really helping. When Cameron4President gets here, he will help sort through the suggestions we have had so far - we are only trying to get a rough draft at this stage - so it doesn't have to be definitive. All further suggestions on the gaps and the covers gratefully received. It's good to have a few choices to listen to later. Thanks

Really happy with the choices for Cropduster, I am Mine and You Are.

I think there are better versions of Down out there, and possibly Ghost as the one chosen does have a bit of a scrappy ending (not many to choose from)

And I still prefer Melbourne's Know Your rights over Uniondale.

    But that's just me!

After re-checking, the versions of Ghost and Down that have been chosen are perhaps the best examples out there from 2003.

    Good finds!

Good Morning to everybody here in the States , and good Afternoon to all of my European friends. Wow...
Excellent work, lots of stuff to consider because you guys have been busy. For some reason I was sure that they played "Trouble" in 2003 (in Japan), but I guess I was thinking of "Don't Be Shy".

Looking through these last few posts, I saw that there was some discussion debating whether "Don't Be Shy" should be included, and it is my opinion that although it's a great song, it does not fit on this compilation.

"I Won't Back Down" would definitely be a better fit. (This song spot could also be eliminated if we run long on time.)

Let me read a few things and I will update the track list.
