Americans have become wimps when it comes to being responsibility for there own safety. If there were more gun owners it would deter the use of guns ....

Harvard Study: Gun Control Is Counterproductive......

If the mantra "more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death" were true, broad cross-national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death. Nations with higher gun ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide rates than those with lower gun ownership. Indeed many high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates. (p. 661)
Finally, and as if to prove the bumper sticker correct - that "gun don't kill people, people do" - the study also shows that Russia's murder rate is four times higher than the U.S. and more than 20 times higher than Norway. This, in a country that practically eradicated private gun ownership over the course of decades of totalitarian rule and police state methods of suppression. Needless to say, very few Russian murders involve guns.

Have you read this study? It is flawed by making comparisons between a stable US and other countries while they are in a state of change.

For example, murder rate comparisons were made between the US and post Cold War Russia. I think it's fair to suggest that getting accurate statistics for gun ownership in Russia might be difficult to attain- skewing any data that might be produced. Further... comparing a country that is stable to one that has recently collapsed and seeking to regain stability might not produce telling statistics with much accuracy (if any at all).

'Generalized' violence rates were also made between the US and UK. Comparisons were made to each country's response to such violence- with the UK banning handguns and other rifles in the 90s and the US remaining status quo. The study states:
England’s response was ever‐more drastic gun control including, eventually, banning and confiscating all handguns and many types of long guns.Nevertheless, criminal violence rampantly increased so that by 2000 England surpassed the United States to become one of the developed world’s most violence‐ridden nations.

The study didn't offer any data to support this questionable claim (that I saw), however what can be said at this point in time is that by allowing the UK's plan to take effect... the country has seen a dramatic reversal of the study's assertion:
Recent data yields a firearm related homicide rate of 0.07 per 100,000 people in the UK... while the US sees 2.97 per 100,000 people.

In short, even if the study was accurate in describing the UK as one of the world's most violence-ridden nations... it is clear that once the weapons have had a chance to disappear... the same could not be said anymore.

I do agree that getting accurate statistics for gun ownership anywhere is impossible since illegal gun owners will not volunteer the fact they own a gun....

no one has ever stated that the number of guns is the ONLY problem. but it certainly doesn't help.

  • In a country with 320 million people, if we have a school shooting every 4 years or so, a mass murder every year or so, thats not that bad!

If you compare populations, America isnt much worse than any other free country!

Compare to England, Austrailia, France, Germany, Japan, China, Russia, etc.

Also, counties with tough gun restrictions have the most murders! Fact

    Huh?

If I am not mistaken 10.2 per 100,000 is more than .25 per 100,000, no?

Yeah, it's not that bad when YOUR kids aren't involved is a very easy thing to say. Let your child get gun down Newtown style and let's see if you still feel the same.

NO! One armed guard in each school! Or maybe more depending on size of school! Also, metal detectors at doors. I want the kids to feel safe, as if you were in an airport!

Fair enough I was a pre school teacher and defending children while armed would not and should not be ANY teacher's responsibility.

I dont oppose all forms of taxes! I oppose wasteful govt. spending!

ALSO****Economical means that metal detectors would support that industry. AND economical means instead of having 200 guns in each school on teachers, we would have only one gun on one security guard, thus creating another job! Got it?

You want the kids to grow up feeling safe?

And, at the same time, distrustful of all? Growing up to keep a trained eye on the passing stranger? Ready to pounce of the slightest threatening gesture might be made or perceived? So much for loving your neighbour and fellow countrymen when every person may just be a threat.

What a grand vision for your country!

Your comments seem to reflect the notion that you have given up on hope. You're basically saying you're screwed... so in light of the fact you're screwed... get ready for the shitstorm!

Instead of all the reactive and precautionary measures aimed at dealing with the inevitable... do you have anything to offer that might have a chance of actually 'bettering' conditions for your country?
