With the X-mas Single, it is not about the music for most fans in the first place. Because let's face it, the stuff released there isn't that great most of the time (although there were some highlights like 'Strangest Tribe' and some others).
It is about the vinyl, it is about collecting.
The point with collecting $1.67 a month is so stupid, sorry.
What do you say when Pearl jam sells their next album exclusively for $50?
Would you also say 'just save some money every month'?
It isn't about not being able to get the money. It is about principles. And it is about a bad deal for a lot of fans.
When you didn't get these points yet from this really long discussion, you didn't understand what most people criticising the system wanted to express.
1) What's good is you still can get the vinyl each year
2) It's stupid to you because you don't want to pay it.
3) When the new album comes out guess what, I will get both the vinyl and CD which will cost me around $40. If my cost was $50 yes I would still buy it without whining.
4) My wife and I put PJ money aside every month anyway. The Jar says "PJ Emergency fund"
5) How can it be a bad deal when everything you get costs more than what you are paying? The good thing is if you feel its a bad deal you can still only pay $20 and then next year when you realize how stupid of an idea it was not to go Analog you can always change your mind later that year or the following year.

1) I agree!
2) It's stupid because with these arguments, you can justify every price boost.
3) That's sad, because that means they could do anything with you.
4) Smart idea!
5) I don't think the things cost more than the 50$ I have to pay. Surely not!

A T-shirt and concert download are a minimum of $30 alone + the vinyl single and if you get tickets it's well worth $50(even though I only pay $40). Heck, if you get tickets you saved about $100 per ticket just from stub hub prices.
The shittiest thing about this $20 rise is that it is getting lots of decent and sensible people that use this forum worked up into ripping all sorts of strips off each other. A price rise isn't great news, but this current situation online is fucking horrible. I know one of the main things we have in common is we all pay the Ten Club some money already - but the ill feeling this price rise is generating is very unpleasant. Is it worth it?
im a member of 10 cos i support the band i love
im a member of 10c cos my pj friends are here and i can communicate with them
im a member of 10c cos its about music that i love

in member of 10c cos give me the chance to buy merch-vinyl -bootlegs etc,
i would be a member of 10c even if i didnt get anything of the previous, cos no problem to honor the best band ever that i love with an annoual membership that some cash.
im proud member of pearl jam fan club and i can afford to do it.
the people running that fan club decide to change the membership way...they give me options..stay as you are, leave,go up level of membership..i choose..im happy, waiting for 2011 tour activity..
the last 4 days i check around i didnt see any gun point at me and ready to shoot if im not choose the new mewmbership

you're thinking of things in term of RETAIL value... i for one don't expect 10C to be running at a huge profit... and last i checked theres no stockholders breathing down their necks... assuming the band can pay 10C employee salaries with tour profits, non-10C exclusive merch sales, and album sales there's no reason the fanclub can't do better than retail... a shirt costs $3-4 with bulk orders... the download doesn't cost the 10C anything...
i know its just a matter of how you wanna justify things, but no matter how you slice it the 10C is making SIGNIFICANTLY more money with this analog package

Of course they are making money. they make more money than you can possibly imagine. There are 375,000 members. If half the members do Analog and half do digital the 10 club will make $11.5 million just in membership fees. And I'm guessing more than half will be Analog members. That doesn't even include merch. If you knew how much they were making annually your eyes would pop out.

well call me a no good commie but i for one would prefer they make less money
i want them to work equally hard or harder... but for less money... and i think that is perfectly fair
This makes me wonder... if 10C is not living up to their end of the contract (no Deep last year, inconsistent 'holiday' singles sent out), we consumers have more legal ground here, even before the legal membership contract change. :?:
Possibly but the apologists would probably sabotage the case and protest outside of the courtroom Donna Martin Graduates style. Their obsession and love for the club rivals people's complaints 100:1 so they would no doubt take it personal.
I would never consider suing for something so trivial but sadly, that would be about the only thing that could get their attention. If it hasn't changed by now, it probably never will.
I wouldn't consider suing either of course. But normally, a paying customer of any business would NOT be ok if the business didn't fulfill their end of the bargain especially if the business decided to change terms of the agreement!

Addiction makes people act irrational.
I won't be renewing.
They did not change the terms of the agreement. I renewed in December and I will still be getting my mag and vinyl in 11... when I renew in December next year, I will decide which way I want to go...

They changed it for people who prepaid several years under the old system. Now they have to pay the difference if they want to receive the vinyl.

Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue!
You only feel that way because the $20 membership doesn't get the record anymore. Other than that reason there is no difference in the digital membership.
For most members, there are two reasons for being in the fanclub:
One is the x-mas single (on VINYL), the other is the ticket opportunity.
For a lot of non-US fans, it is the X-mas Single that is important, since we don't have a problem getting tickets here (if they even come to our area).
Shows nearly never sell out immediately here, and because of general admission shows, Tickets are all the same.
So for these fans (and this is not a smal number), the new membership system sucks.
They have to pay $50 for the Single. Because let's face it, the Deep magazin isn't worth the paper it is written on.
When considering these points, I think there is a basis for a discussion about the new model.
There is definitely a basis for discussion about the new model! It actually seems like some of the people who agree / don't care about the change are the rudest ones on here. I'll be switching to analog, I think the t - shirt and bootleg are worth it for me, but I can definitely understand why others are upset, especially when it comes to the digital membership.

Only a a handful of places PJ play are going to be immediate sell outs.

you're in luck... i gotta decide next week... the way i see it its $40 for a decent package (w/ a shirt i REALLY wanna see before i order) or $20 for nothing... i would like to take a principled stand and just pay the $20 but i can't justify paying that for nothing but ticket privileges... if i pay the $40 i look like a hypocrite for all the bitching i've done here... either option is more than i wanna spend right now but i'm not about to lose my number after 8 years
decisions decisions
See, this is sorta the problem right here. You won't look like a hypocrite because no one's interested. Act as a consumer and make your purchase or don't. No one will bat an eyelash one way or the other. I think it's this sorta myopic outlook that's causing so many people to take a fan club fee hike so personally.
My membership is ok until November and at the moment I don't think I'll be upgrading to analog. On principle I don't pay 100% more for any product unless I need it to survive of feed/clothe my family. I don't go for lots of PJ merch except boots so the t-shirt doesn't mean much to me and I buy nearly every boot anyway in cd format. I'd much rather have Deep in pdf as I don't need them once they've been read although in my opinion they could give us one or two extra mags per year even if only in pdf format because it's great to have news or articles directly from 10C (while you're at it how about pdf archives for all the previous Deep mags and newsletters, I'd love to see some of those). The benefits of being a member for me exist in the digital version, ticket pre-sales, holiday single (now mp3), discount sales in the goods section occasionally, Deep and of course the forums where I've made and met some good friends. Whatever choice everyone else makes is theirs and I respect everyone's reasons for upgrading, going analog or even not renewing. There's far too many threads related to this subject and far too much hostility brewing in the forums since this announcement. Anyway, hats off to 10C for all these years at $20, great value for money really and that's what I'll hopefully still get for my $20. My wishes for 2011, more PJ related news to actually come from 10C where possible and if the tweets are to continue then tweet when the news is more or less ready because the long wait leads to hostility too and countless locked threads. See all your happy, smiling faces somewhere in the middle of the US sometime in the middle of the year!!

I'm just curious, where do you draw the line? How much could PJ charge for a new album or t-shirt before even you said, "Hey now, that's ridiculous." ?
This is how I rationalize anything I really want (and in this case really need) but probably should not spend the money for. $40 a year? comes to 11 cents a day. If 11 cents a day buys me something that makes me happy, so very happy, then it's a no brainer for me. No need to analyze all the ins and outs. I love this band, and love this community. The day I will be really upset is the day I get the e-mail that they are no longer offering memberships. Until then - call me a posimist. Fuck the pessimists.
Damn I clicked on registered users. My bad. However there are now 80,631 now.
I don't see how thats possible though considering the member numbers are around 460xxx now.
totally possible... some people have probably accidentally let 2 or 3 numbers lapse
PJ has about a quarter the general fanbase they used to
probably a lot of people quit after PJ stopped touring heavily post-RA
it'd be kind of cool if they reassigned numbers and got rid of the dead ones between 1 and mine... i'd like to know where i actually am in line
