I lived in Memphis at the time of the murders, many years before most of you guys jumped on Ed's bandwagon.
What you never see now, that all the media showed then (1993) was Echols laughing at the TV cameras any chance he got, mocking people and generally making an asshole of himself. Basically if you saw this, all you could think is 'what a sick fuck this guy is." If you are innocent of a crime, I know I would be in tears, pleading my innocence to anyone who would listen. Not this guy, not until he gets sent to the big boy, butt raping prison does he change his tune. Now all of a sudden hes a misunderstood troubled kid. He loved the attention, wanting to be remembered as the next Charles Manson and "West Memphis Boogeyman".
I commend Ed for staying the course longer than anybody. I think if there is new evidence then why not grant a new trial. Obviously the cops bungled the evidence. If they can still convict them with the evidence they have , so be it. Just because Vedder says they are innocent, doesnt mean they are.
jumped on Ed's bandwagon. I can think for myself thank you. If it werent for Ed's interest in this case I might not have known about it, but that's the extent of it. He brought it to the Pearl Jam fans attention and for that I thank him, but in no way do I blindly support whatever Ed says or does.
I think if there is new evidence then why not grant a new trial. Obviously the cops bungled the evidence. If they can still convict them with the evidence they have , so be it. AGREED! That's all most of us are saying, then this can be put to rest and those poor boys can rest in peace.
Just because Vedder says they are innocent, doesnt mean they are Also agreed, but the facts surrounding the case such as lack of DNA DOES!
for the only thing im sure about this case is that noone here can make a trial...
i guess the judge will do it..i hope this clear up in the end..

I had no idea what the fuck Ed kept referring to when he spoke of the west memphis 3 at a few gigs, until last night..then when I saw that kid's face, I totally remembered the HBO documentary from when I was 14.....not certain these kids did it, but this still sounds like a gloating confession by Damien after being caught:
"I kind of enjoy it because now even after I die people are going to remember me forever. They're going to talk about me for years, People in West Memphis will tell their kids stories. It will be like, sort of like I'm the West Memphis boogeyman. Little kids will be looking under their beds."

He didn't bring it to all the fans attention. A lot of us watched the HBO documentary for ourselves back in the day and almost everyone with a funtioning brain had doubts of the guilt of the 3 teenagers. Vedder was just like the rest of us only he has a voice and an ability to raise money that we don't. It's easy for people to say your following Ed but they say that because it makes them feel warm and fuzzy at night but I had doubts during my viewing of the documentary long before Ed came forward that he was helping with the cause.
Here is what will really get some of you going. The West Memphis Three are gonna get out someday. So your warm fuzzy nights are in jeapordy baby.
When it comes to Misskelly's coerced confession, the police threatened him continuously until he said what they wanted to hear. But he kept giving details that weren't accurate so the police would use phrases to direct his story where they wanted him to go. He said he wasn't involved, then made up a story, recanted that story, told another story, revised his story, recanted again, and so on. His attorney said he has the mental capacity of a five year old child. So it is not hard to believe he could be led into saying what the police wanted him to say. In terms of the police bungling the investigation, they know they screwed up their evidence collection and suspect interviews. However, their careers would be too scrutinized if they admitted any wrong doing so they continue to stand by their verdicts. In defense of Damien's comments, he was apparently a smart-ass, troubled youth, much like many of us were at that age. He did himself no favors during and immediately after his trial with the comments he made but they reflect his maturity level at the time. If he were to have done this crime, there would be more than just a smart-ass teenager claiming the deed. There would be a trail of evidence backing up the story.
I think this case resonates with so many of us is because we could have been Damien. I listened to heavy metal, read about the occult, and made comments about things that would make a "good Christian" panic when I was that age. Luckily, I didn't get accused of killing anyone.
Can everyone agree that there is atleast reasonable doubt? There is plenty of evidence, both damaging and helpful to their cases, so why not put an end to it once and for all? Can we all agree the original trial was at best shady, and therefore there is enough reason to have a proper fair trial? If they are guilty, then they deserve all they get. But if they are innocent, they should be given their freedom back and the hunt should be on for the real killer.
Reasonable doubt. It was enough to get OJ off, and there was way more evidence against him.
I can think for myself thank you. If it werent for Ed's interest in this case I might not have known about it, but that's the extent of it. He brought it to the Pearl Jam fans attention and for that I thank him, but in no way do I blindly support whatever Ed says or does.

Many teens act out, get involved with weird shit, lose themselves, hey don't even know themselves yet. That does not make them psycho.
He was young and unstable, disillusioned and misguided. How was he supposed to act through all this. "Act" being a very good word. When you are unstable life is a stage.
And really, look back, teenagers can be a little weird to say the least, no offense to the teens here. The world is overwhelming for teens and they are trying to find themselves. Add in family troubles, peer pressures and being different in a small southern town would make one not want to conform all the more. Sometimes we are what they say we are, just cause we can and it's easier.
None of us really know how we would react being charged in a crime like that especially as young people.
I think this fact and the railroading, and the lack of evidence is what caught the eye of the original film maker. Eddie is and has stayed involved for the same reasons. He sees that Damien was a troubled teen not unlike many other teens, perhaps he can even relate, as I can, to having identity issues as a teen.
I don't think people here believe they are innocent just because Eddie says so. I think we believe in Ed's judgement though, his credibility, and that along with the facts we are reading, many are questioning if this is not a case of injustice.
start watching around 7:10 regarding the Bojangle's incident
This Mr.Bojangles situation is the most disturbing and ridiculous part of the whole thing. How that scene was treated by police is a fucking travesty. They LOST evidence gathered there (I think including blood)!

Plus they were represented by court appointed lawyers they usually do nothing for you to get good representation you have to have a good lawyer wich cost lots of money anybody remember the OJ trial .....these kids might as well had nobody on their side's ...
If he was joking im absolutely dumbfounded how he could joke about that.
Me and my mates joke about sick stuff all the time, call it sarcasm mixed with a dark sense of humour - doesn't make any of us bad people, usually it's just making light of a really fucked up incident.
What about all the sick jokes that go around after people die?
2 girls also testified that they heard echols admit to the killings at a softball game shortly after the murders, which echols recently admitted that he might have done and chalked it up to being a dumb teenager. Does that make any sense?
Also a kid jason baldwin spent time in jail with testified that baldwin told him he did the crime.
So all 3 supposedly admitted to the killings (well 1 obviously definitely did, misskelley), whether you believe those people that testifed against echols and baldwin is another story. But the jury obviously believed it.
Sure, a jury full of ignorant hicks. I've seen the documentary, I've seen some of the interviews. These yokels were after someone's blood. They're no better than whoever really killed those poor boys.
I watched the interview on larry King last night and learned more about the case and everything but I still have alot of questions. Does anybody think its odd that one of the convicted guys actually confessed to the murders and gave details but wants it retracted because he has a low IQ? They never brought that up last night when Larry was interviewing the lawyer. Also, has any celebrities supported the victims familys with money or a concert? I just think its kinda odd that Johnny Depp goes up on stage and reads Mr. Echols writings with a fake english accent (hes american , right? ) and everyone applauds him and thinks hes so great. It sounded like the guy was reading for a part. These three guys were not saints and I think its kinda odd that 17 years later all this new evidence has shown up. I do applaud Eddies efforts but after watching last night, I have more questions than answers. What do others think?
Johnny lives in Europe and had been with a European girl for 12 years, must have picked it up, it suits him
I thought he lived in France though, not England. ...is his girlfriend English?

Actually, FYI... it's 69 and below. 70-79 is considered Borderline. 72 is close, though, so obviously a coerced confession is not farfetched.
What about the 3rd confession with his attorney present?
I think, especially with someone with a low IQ and someone who is younger, with a whirlwind of crap the justice system is throwing at you, not to mention cops who are pressured to give the community an answer as to who is guilty, forced confessions that are actually false are not a rarity at all. I have a whole slew of law enforcement/lawyers in my family, and unfortunately, people give false confessions fairly frequently, especially when abused- er, pressured- by police.
And earlier, someone commented that the lack of evidence pointing to these guys doesn't seem to be that substantive as an explanation of innocence. First, let's remember that we are all innocent until proven guilty- not the other way around. Second, there is additional evidence (not mentioned on Larry King) that points to Terry Hobbs, including hair found *in* the knot tied around one of the boys. The hair was IN the knot, as in, had to have come from when the knot was tied. Plus, neighbors have since come forth stating with certainty, that they heard Hobbs yelling at the children in the hours before the murders. So the lack of evidence pointing to the WM3 in combination with the evidence that Hobbs is the perpetrator seems pretty compelling to me.
That being said, for full disclosure, there is a lot of information that I don't have on the case and have not been following it extremely closely.
If he was joking im absolutely dumbfounded how he could joke about that.

So if three 8 year old boys were brutally murdered in your hometown, would you go around joking that you did it? Come on, theres a difference between joking about that and making dead michael jackson jokes.
the "manhole" theory, basically saying 1 of the kids step dads (terry hobbs, who's hair was found on 1 of the shoelaces the kids were tied up with) killed them in a manhole the kids would play in, then later on in the night dumped the bodies in the woods where they were found. Most people think the kids were NOT murdered in the woods, it was just a dumping ground, which would explain the almost complete lack of physcial evidence where the kids were found.
If he was joking im absolutely dumbfounded how he could joke about that.

Just because we wouldn't doesn't mean someone wouldn't. I could think of a bunch of "weird" people from my high school that would do something like that.
all ed, john, and natalie need to do is offer up 3 million dollars and someone will begin to sing.
I would bet my life that Ed has already donated extremely generously to this cause. The legal process is an extremely costly one, and the cost of retrying a case and paying a legal defense team over the course of 17 years is astronomical. I'm sure Ed and the rest of them have given a solid amount of money thus far.
