U2 Go Back to the Nineties With Massive 'Achtung Baby' Reissue 'I'm blown away listening to some of the outtakes,' says the Edge
On the most recent dates of U2's 360° Tour, the band members have been showing grainy footage of themselves hanging out in Berlin during the recording of Achtung Baby — a rare moment of unabashed nostalgia that also hints at what's next from U2. This fall, the band will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album that hit the reset button on its sound — along with the LP's accompanying Zoo TV Tour and its 1993 follow-up, Zooropa — with ambitious reissues, complete with unseen video footage and rare recordings.
"I'm blown away listening to some of the rough mixes and the outtakes," says the Edge. "There's some very interesting alternative versions that we discovered of songs that wouldn't have seen the light of day, alternative lyrics, different arrangement styles — it's like Achtung Baby out of focus."
It's likely there will be separate reissues of Achtung Baby and Zooropa, along with a deluxe box set that incorporates both albums as well as video and/or audio from Zoo TV. "There will be multiple formats," says U2's manager, Paul McGuinness. "If you pile a lot of extra material and packaging and design work into a super-duper box set, there are people who will pay quite a lot for it, so you can budget it at a very high level and pump up the value." The band is also working on a U2 app for the iPad and other tablets that could be involved with the releases.
The group recently filmed a new performance of songs from the period in a Canadian theater, reportedly for use in a documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim, who worked with the Edge on the guitar doc It Might Get Loud. The band has also discovered substantial unseen footage from the early Nineties. "We were filming everything," says McGuinness. "There's a lot of material that has never really been seen, and seeing it will be quite startling."

Nice find! Hope there'll be a couple of other screenings, wouldn't mind catching this as well as PJ20. Achtung Baby/Zoo TV is awesome... can't get enough!

Yep. I think the documentary will also be part of the Achtung Baby/Zooropa anniversary release later this year. I'd love to go to TIFF to see it, but will just wait for the box set release.

It's going to be a part of the reissue. They've done the vinyl with the past reissues of the 80s albums.

Too cool. So is U2 playing their doc at selected theaters across the country also?
Not sure. I think it would be cool if they did. I hope it'll be released with the reissue.

Two new album listings have hit Amazon.com and, if the date proves true, both indicate that the Achtung Baby / Zooropa remasters will be released on November 8, 2011. There's one listing that just says Achtung Baby and another that says Achtung Baby: (Deluxe edition). Both listings are sparse-- no images and no details other than the November 8 date. Both also say "1 CD," but we can probably assume that won't be the case on the Deluxe Edition.
Of course, all of this is subject to change.

Saw it from atU2's Twitter account and they said it looks like a recreation of the One video. Can't wait to see the documentary!

what is the documentary going to cover and when will it be out?
I believe the documentary is about the making of Achtung Baby and it premieres the first day of the Toronto Film Festival, September 8th.

Achtung Baby is probably my favorite album of all times. One of the best nights of my life was the Zoo TV tour in Vegas, sixth row. I was 13 or 14 and my mind blowed up. Pearl Jam is my favorite band of course but the experience I had that night was otherworldly. I effing love that album (except for wild horses).

Zoo TV must've been amazing! I wish there was good video footage of the arena tour. I'd love to see what it was like.

I remember this album fondly from back in the day but really it is the thing that killed U2.
They found their new sound with The Edge's silly little guitar gadget that he started using on that album and they just haven't let it go since. Wonderful album but it took them in a new direction that they just can't seem to stop running down and they've made about half a dozen decent songs in the last 20 years.

funny thing is I thought that this was supposed to be a remaster, but all I see is that it is the original AB and Zooropa.
Seems like they ditched the Zooropa plan went with a full-scale reissue and remaster of Achtung.

yes, but I do not see anything about either albums being remastered. This is what it says:
"6 CDs including the original Achtung Baby album, the follow-up album, Zooropa, B-sides and re-workings of previously unheard material recorded during the Achtung Baby sessions."
Only way I am getting this is as a present or wait a year or two when it will be in the discount bin.
I have most of the dvd's and music that they listed. All I would be interested in seeing are the book and the new movie.

I'm sure it's remastered but they probably left that out. I will be disappointed if they weren't remastered.
But I agree with you, the only way I'll get this is as a gift. I just wish there was a link for the US Amazon also.

That's funny because I was just looking on the site and saw that. I might have to purchase it soon.

yeah, I am a little peaved. The blue shirt with U2 360 across the front in white can now be had for $25 and it includes the tour program. I bought it in NJ for $40, saw it in Pittsburgh for $30. But I just ordered the $65 hoody and program bundle for $45, glad I held off on that one.

Nice. I might do a little shopping on that site for a couple shirts. Have you ever ordered shirts from the site before?
