Achtung Baby!

you say this on the pearl jam forums?
haha...true!
but I think it is more likely to get a PJ rare song, than a U2 rare song.
But in U2's defense they do rotate some of the older ones while on tour. One of the best moments I had at any concert is when they did The Electric Co. at one of the Philly shows on the Vertigo tour. I was right next to the stage, felt like I was part of the song, was amazing0 -

Acrobat has never been played live, it's the holy grail to a lot of fans. I like the song well enough, I just don't understand why some are so obsessive about hearing it live.
On their current tour, Rush performs the album Moving Pictures in the middle of the show, and that is just amazing. I would love for U2 to do that, but I really don't see that happening.
I heard about Rush doing that. I think it's the 30th anniversary of the album.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

Not noticed this thread before. I love Achtung Baby, although at first I thought it was a let down after Joshua Tree - I soon woke up to it though, and probably play it about twice as much as I do Joshua Tree - my two main u2 albums I return to.
I always think Achtung Baby sounds like a 'divorce' album. There is certainly a lot of heartache and intensity there. I read an interview with the musician Moby one time where he said something similar - he also said that every song has a reference to oral sex in it.Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection

yes, great observations. Achtung Baby was made around the time that Edge was going through divorce with his wife at the time and a lot of that came out in Bono's lyrics.
Actually the making of the album is an interesting story, worth looking at. They almost didn't make it, there was a lot of conflict between the band members over it. Once the song One came together, then the rest of the album gelled.0 -

Personal anecdote regarding this masterpiece.
Back in 1998, talking about mostly Pink Floyd with a friend, whom I considered my personal music guru at the time, I told him I have been saving some money to buy a cd. After that long talk, I told him I came to a conclusion to buy the dark side of the moon. I was about 19 at the time and he is about 10 years older. He approved in excitement my decision.
I went to the store a few days later and came across Achtung Baby!. My first ever cd was rattle and hum, wich my dad bought me at my request when I was about 15, but in 1998 I have never listened to any other complete U2 studio album. I have rented the Zoo TV VHS at my local video rental a few years before this and was blown away by the radical and cool change compared to rattle and hum (i have also seen the film, wich is why I wanted the cd).
I read the title tracks of Achtung (while holding the darks side cd on my other hand) and instantly remembered the sidney video concert.
A couple of weeks later I met my friend again and he asked me about my cd and I said i did not by the dark side. His first reaction was "what!?, howcome? Its pink floyd!" I have grown to be this passionate about music as well... "What did you buy?" I said, Achtung Baby. And while I was mentaly preparing to explain why, his face changed from schocking to neutral. And just said, "oh. Good choice. Amazing album." Until then, we have never discussed about U2. Mostly only 70´s music and alot of Rush.IN THE DARK, ALL CATS ARE BLACK.0 -

It's confirmed that they are performing in the theater for an Achtung documentary. Bono, of all people, confirmed it (we know how he is with new albums).

U2'S SECOND DAY IN WINNIPEG: PROTESTS & PERFORMANCES
As I type this, U2 are performing for the cameras inside Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg. It's their second day in the city for what is now confirmed to be a documentary video shoot about Achtung Baby with director Davis Guggenheim. Bono confirmed that on Winnipeg TV news Friday night.
When the band arrived at the theatre today, they were greeted by both fans and protesters. The protesters were reportedly from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and were upset because they believe that U2 is using non-union crew.
The big white sign in this photo from @U2 reader Greg McVicker says
"Sunday Bloody Sunday"
Edge & Bono
Union Busters
The protest ended, though, after someone came out and talked to the group. It's possible the protesters were mistaken about U2's use of union employees. Anyway, we expect to get more info about the band's video performance inside the theatre, and possibly more photos, so we'll update this post later when we know more.

Thats great news! I have never heard of a reissue of this album. I hope they release vinyls as well.
Newch91: You won´t regret buying the Zoo tv dvd. Its a great document of this U2 era.
I think what most people don´t like about this, is that it seems Bono, and the band, are acting like big shots, rock stars. It is true. They are (were) acting. "The Fly", "mirrorball man", etc are fictional characters. Not to be mistaken with bono himself. Wich to me, was a brilliant stage act. And the music is beyond fantastic and innovative.
You could hear a hint of Achtung Baby in rattle in hum´s "God Part II". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfTmG7_WzgA
Sort of what RUSH was hinting with "Vital Signs" on Moving Pictures for their next album, Signals. Musicaly hinting that is.IN THE DARK, ALL CATS ARE BLACK.0 -

I might order the the 2-disc version from Amazon, which has a bunch of extras (I'm an extras person).
I have heard about people being upset and confused about this era of U2. I heard "The Fly" character was Bono being a stereotypical rock star (black leather jacket and pants, black sunglasses). Gotta love it!
The stage set up was WAY ahead of its time (and also PopMart).
I was thinking the same thing about "God Part II" and how it was probably a little warning for fans of what was to come.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

Now that I think about it, when "No Line on the Horizon" came out, Comcast had a bunch of U2 concerts and videos On Demand and I started to watch Zoo TV. I think I got up to Numb or Stay, then stopped watching.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

I didn't know that about the Edge, and the songwriting - but that makes a lot of sense. I think Achtung Baby has some of the best lyrics and songwriting of any album I know actually. Gonna have to give this baby a spin before breakfast!Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection
