    U2 Reportedly Reissuing 'Achtung Baby'
By Jonathan on September 18, 2010 10:59 PM

    by John D. Luerssen, Spinner

The U2 camp is apparently plotting its next round of remastered and expanded reissues. But word that the band's 1991 classic 'Achtung Baby' is being sonically tweaked came from an unlikely source: singer-songwriter and indie producer John Vanderslice.

"They're remastering Achtung Baby in next room!!" Vanderlice tweeted from a Los Angeles recording studio, where he was putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming album with the Magik*Magik Orchestra. According to Slicing Up Eyeballs, Vanderslice subsequently added, "Any suggestions for witty opening salvos to drop on U2 crew when I barge in on 'Achtung Baby' remastering session?"

Wrens frontman Charles Bissell, of all folks, jumped in on the fun to write, "At some point say, 'that sounds even better than the real thing.'"
While there's no word when 'Achtung Baby' will be reborn, the 20th anniversary of its release is just 14 months away. There's currently no expectation of a similar treatment for 'Rattle & Hum,' but it wouldn't be the first time the group reissued its back catalog out of sequence. Fans will recall that expanded version of 1987's 'The Joshua Tree' was released in 2007, preceding 1984's deluxe treatment of 'The Unforgettable Fire,' which dropped in October 2009.

A treasure trove of rare material exists from this era, including original B-sides like 'Lady With the Spinning Head,' 'Where Did It All Go Wrong' and covers of Cole Porter's 'Night and Day,' Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love,' Lou Reed's 'Satellite of Love,' the Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black,' plus material that leaked in advance of the album as 'The Trashcan Bootlegs' in April 1991. The previously unreleased guitar track 'In Cold Blood,' which was kept off of 'Zooropa' because it didn't fit the dance-rock formula of that set, might also be a strong candidate for inclusion.

Please, please tell me this will be out either at the end of the year or next year. Looking more like next year, but they can do something with it for the Christmas deadline this year. I will be buying this reissue the day it's out.

Maybe Bono was reading this thread! :D

    That's very awesome, great news.

    Yep. Just maybe.

When I read it, I knew you would love it. I was very happy to read that.

I dont hate bono or his causes

I hate that a great band seeks to commercialize its music and maximize profits every time out

Their insistance of having singles for their albums is what scuppered their last album if only they could have just made a great album and let the songs speak for themselves, instead they enlist Eno & Lanois to create a mood for the album and then get Steve Lillywhite in to commercialize their sound for the sake of singles and not very good ones at that, I agree with you, I used to defend them and think they weren't in for the money but the last tour or fairground ride atraction that I witnessed last august in Cardiff just strengthens the belieft they are just looking for the dollar.

I'd like to think that if Songs of Ascension does surafce that it will remain the type of album Bono promosed more a mood and atmosphere, what No Line should have been but I'm just to wise to their strategy and no doubt it will be sabotaged by shoehorning singles into it just for the sake of sales, their last album was flop on their standards and I really can't see them letting that happen 2 times in a row.

Achtung never felt this way it flowed beuatifully together and despite the fact it had hit singles they didn't feel contrived or shoehorned in just like the awful Get on Your Boots. They need to stop giving a shit about acceptance and just make another great record, they are rich enough maybe not even tour it just release it and let it speak for itself.

You've made some great points here and I can understand your problem with Bono, but I think most people that say they hate Bono do so for the lamest reasons.

I've read more than once that Bono is always shooting for that home run single on every album, and lord knows Get on Your Boots was probably their worst attempt at that. But like you said, save for a few terrible attempts at hits, that album was a gem. I'd rate it their best since Pop.

I think it was The Edge that wanted Get On Your Boots first. The rest of the band, I think, wanted Magnificent.

I've gotta say ATYCLB was a fantastic album. When that came out, it was their best since Achtung Baby. A strong album from start to finish.

  • I certainly don't have any hate for Bono just really annoyance, I accept he needs to do the charity work because he feels guilty have all the money he's got and wants to give something back, some rock stars are happy to be rich and not give a shit about all around them but Bono has always wanted to do more than just be a selfish rock star and calling him a wanker, a cunt etc is just lazy. I know so many people hate him and he does a good job of geting up peoples noses, although despite he supposedly having this huge ego many who meet him say he is very humble around them. He does seem to play the game better than anyone out there, he can be front man, charity man, family man & spokesman and it never seem to faze him unlike the likes of Cobain & Eddie to some degree, Bono can walk the line between and appear a very balanced person still, I think that does really get people. I think some think that their rock stars should be tortured and uncomfortable that fact someone enjoys it is one of the reasons Bono gets so much hate. My problem with Bono is about the band and the way he insists on being liked by everyone and compromises their output for acceptance.

I remember reading their autobiography and getting really pissed off when he tried to discount Zooropa, I understand he has problems with POP but I remember him being very proud of Zooropa and rightly so. That remixing the tracks for the 90-2000 best of was hugely disrespectful to that album as well. Then they try to tell me that AYCLB, & HTDAAB are great albums, they both have their moments but there is so much filler amoungst them, POP for me has less fat on it, I actually really like POP.

I think the problem is I got into U2 proper through Achtung and loved the experimental flavoured sound of that album and the 2 that followed despite their flaws they are far more interesting than the return to getting our old fans back album All & Bomb.

They are just to preoccupied with success to actually make a consistent great album once they realise that they have enough money and that they have allot of fans who aren't necessarily going to like everything they produce and just make the album they want to and No Line was a compromise between making the album they wanted and the album they thought would sell the album and tour to all their fans.

If I hear Bono say we are looking to be the best band on the planet come the next album I'll know that they have compromised again and just want singles on the radio, I do hope Songs For Ascension is a return to form but I'm quickly falling out of love with U2 when their are so many better bands willing not to compromise. Either be a pop band that the average man on street likes or make great music that you don't give a shit whether it is accepted or not, you can't be both and No Line proved that.

On a positive note great to hear that Achtung is get the re-issue treatment, will look forward to a 180 gram pressing of one of my favourite albums of all time.

I needed to bump this thread for this gem that never made the album and, IMO, is the best U2 song to NOT make an album.

I was going to say you can also find that song on the B-sides disc of The Best Of 1990-2000. But then I realised that the other two B-sides on that single (Salomé and Where Did It All Go Wrong) are excellent too. So try to find that single, you won't be disappointed. :)
(and the original -though slightly inferior- version of Lady With The Spinning Head can be found on the One single, which also has the excellent cover of Satellite Of Love as a B-side).

Nope. I posted a thread somewhere on here about them shooting a video in Berlin and The Edge tweeted a picture of a light in Hansa Studios, where some of the album was recorded. A lot of people in the U2 community and on here are saying that they are possibly doing something for the album re-release.

    AHHHH!!!!!!

REPORT: U2 SHOOTING ACHTUNG BABY DOCUMENTARY IN WINNIPEG THIS WEEK

The city of Winnipeg is all abuzz over the sight of several trucks of U2 equipment being loaded into the Burton Cummings Theatre on Thursday.

There's no official word of what's happening, but CJOB radio says U2 is shooting a documentary to be called Achtung! with Davis Guggenheim, the man who helmed It Might Get Loud a couple years ago with The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White. If that turns out to be correct, the documentary would presumably be included on the anticipated-but-not-yet-announced Achtung Baby re-issue/remaster that's expected later this year.

The Winnipeg Free Press says there's a "strong possibility" that U2 will be rehearsing and/or shooting a documentary at the theatre. CBC says they've only been told the facility is booked for a private event.

Yep, plus the stuff they shot in Hansa Studios in Berlin a month or so ago. This is looking to be a mighty reissue package.

Obviously they'll include b-sides like they did with JT and UF. "Lady With the Spinning Head' might be my favorite b-side of theirs.
