I had forgotten until you posted this that Achtung Baby was actually the first CD I ever owned. I got it as a gift along with a Sony Discman. Coincidentally a friend of mine got the same Discman, but he got Vs. as his first CD.

Listening to it now and everytime I listen this album gets better and better and I've listen to the album over 100x. "So Cruel" is such a great song and then followed by "The Fly"...I get chills listening to those two in a row. I really need to buy the ZOO TV DVD.

I should also mention this album has some The Edge's best solos with "The Fly" and "Until the End of the World".

Agreed. I listen to music for the music. People complain about what Bono foes but they fail to realize what shoes he is in. If I made half the amount of money U2 does, I'd be a complete "sellout"!!!!

Also, Bono does donate A LOT of money to Africa and different charities. But to not make this a political debate about Bono, it's really about the great music they make.

Achtung Baby is by far the band best album and easily one of the best albums of the 90's it was all down hill after this but it would be ridiculous to think they would top it.

Easily their most consistent album, Wild Horses is for me the poorest track on the album and that is a great track , it's a cliche but for me One still remains the bands best song, it has been overplayed and used as a soundtrack to so many campaigns big news stories etc but nothing will take away the way I fellt when I first bought Achtung, the way it slowly worked under my skin, I have lost some of that feeling I used to have but if I hear at the right moment it never fails to move me and it has one of Bono's finest vocals.

The Fly may well get disrespected by the band by not even including it on the best ofs they have released, it was an afterthought on 90-2000 a bonus track and not even on that awful U218 travesty but it remains the band best UK no 1 single, Bono described it as the sound of the Joshua Tree been cut down, Achtung rules over JT, nothing as trite as Still Haven't Found (can't stand the JT version, the Rattle gospel version is so much better) Gods Country & Trip Through your Wires on this Baby.

Achtung is free of fat, great intro, the industrial Zoo Station, a great poptastic Even Better, the awesome Until The End, the heartbreaking So Cruel, so should have been a single. The groovetastic Mysterious Ways, the mellow Try'in To Throw and then the holy trinity of closers, the awesome Light My Way followed by Acrobat and then the incredible shimmering and dark beauty that is Love Is Blindlness. All the band excel here Bono's voice and lyrics, Edge's best guitar work, subtle and used just right and Mullens Jnr & Clayton's rythmn section propels the brilliance along.

Joshua saw them take the roof of the building, Achtung put it back on and it's more the better for it, now hurry up with the re-issue so I can have one of my favourite albums on 180 gram audiophile pressing.

I still love me some Zooropa and have plenty of time for Pop but ALTCLB & HTDAAB leave me cold with a few acceptions, No Line showed promise but the bands penchant for wanting singles, gives us toss like Get Your Boots On, Magnificent & If I Go, the title track, Moment, unknown, Fez, Breathe show the band on fine form but it was promised to be a return to form like Achtung and it wasn't. Achtung will always be special to me and whatever followed will never diminish my love for such a remarkably good album.

His eye problem is that he has a sensitivity to light and flashes of light, therefore the constant wearing of sunglasses. I believe that's a pretty good excuse and if Eddie wore them for the same reasons NOBODY would say a word.

Their insistance of having singles for their albums is what scuppered their last album if only they could have just made a great album and let the songs speak for themselves, instead they enlist Eno & Lanois to create a mood for the album and then get Steve Lillywhite in to commercialize their sound for the sake of singles and not very good ones at that, I agree with you, I used to defend them and think they weren't in for the money but the last tour or fairground ride atraction that I witnessed last august in Cardiff just strengthens the belieft they are just looking for the dollar.

I'd like to think that if Songs of Ascension does surafce that it will remain the type of album Bono promosed more a mood and atmosphere, what No Line should have been but I'm just to wise to their strategy and no doubt it will be sabotaged by shoehorning singles into it just for the sake of sales, their last album was flop on their standards and I really can't see them letting that happen 2 times in a row.

Achtung never felt this way it flowed beuatifully together and despite the fact it had hit singles they didn't feel contrived or shoehorned in just like the awful Get on Your Boots. They need to stop giving a shit about acceptance and just make another great record, they are rich enough maybe not even tour it just release it and let it speak for itself.

a distribution deal with Target does not even come close to what u2 does

The U2 camp is apparently plotting its next round of remastered and expanded reissues. But word that the band's 1991 classic 'Achtung Baby' is being sonically tweaked came from an unlikely source: singer-songwriter and indie producer John Vanderslice.

"They're remastering Achtung Baby in next room!!" Vanderlice tweeted from a Los Angeles recording studio, where he was putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming album with the Magik*Magik Orchestra. According to Slicing Up Eyeballs, Vanderslice subsequently added, "Any suggestions for witty opening salvos to drop on U2 crew when I barge in on 'Achtung Baby' remastering session?"

Wrens frontman Charles Bissell, of all folks, jumped in on the fun to write, "At some point say, 'that sounds even better than the real thing.'"
While there's no word when 'Achtung Baby' will be reborn, the 20th anniversary of its release is just 14 months away. There's currently no expectation of a similar treatment for 'Rattle & Hum,' but it wouldn't be the first time the group reissued its back catalog out of sequence. Fans will recall that expanded version of 1987's 'The Joshua Tree' was released in 2007, preceding 1984's deluxe treatment of 'The Unforgettable Fire,' which dropped in October 2009.

A treasure trove of rare material exists from this era, including original B-sides like 'Lady With the Spinning Head,' 'Where Did It All Go Wrong' and covers of Cole Porter's 'Night and Day,' Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love,' Lou Reed's 'Satellite of Love,' the Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black,' plus material that leaked in advance of the album as 'The Trashcan Bootlegs' in April 1991. The previously unreleased guitar track 'In Cold Blood,' which was kept off of 'Zooropa' because it didn't fit the dance-rock formula of that set, might also be a strong candidate for inclusion.

You've made some great points here and I can understand your problem with Bono, but I think most people that say they hate Bono do so for the lamest reasons.

I've read more than once that Bono is always shooting for that home run single on every album, and lord knows Get on Your Boots was probably their worst attempt at that. But like you said, save for a few terrible attempts at hits, that album was a gem. I'd rate it their best since Pop.
