In n Out and Five Guys are both good with Five Guys slightly ahead for me. Carls Jr makes a pretty bad ass burger too.

They're both good... Five Guys has cajun fries so that wins for me.

I'd also add what others have -Culvers in the midwest is great. They have TONS near PJ20... I recommend them to anyone coming in that hasnt had one yet (they have branched out quite a bit in the country).

But I'd go with Smashburger over both... they just opened here and I have to say they will be the reason I have a clogged artery way too soon.

Since five guys would kill me, but I've always wanted to try in and out, my vote is for in and out.

In 'N Out. 5 guys is very good but the burgers lack character in my opinion. I put Fatburger and Smashburger ahead of 5 guys.

Funny, my 11 year old son and I just had this battle on Friday.
5Guys just opened right across the street from In-n-Out near our house. We tried 5 guys for the first time on Friday night and................I'll take in-n-out anyday over that mess at 5 guys. I thought the best thing there was the overhead music.
My burger was ok, My son loved his, said it was better than In-n-Out (strongly disagree) and the price was just not worth it.
$30 for 3 burgers, a large fry for us all to share and 3 small drinks, too expensive.
and what the hell with all the workers in there yelling? ugh, it was obnoxious............I longed for a double double across the street!

I didn't know 5 Guys was a more upper-crust eatery. For that dough, you may as well go to The Stand.

i think i'll be finally able to try in n out when i'm in san fran :D

Finally went to one. First thing i did when i landed. Friend took me to one outside San Rafael. Burgers were great. I didn't care for their fries though. Five guys has better fries, but give a slight edge to In n out on the burger.

    +1

Ate In-N-Out twice in 2 days on my last vacation. 5 Guys is good and the peanuts are a nice touch, but nothing like In-N-Out.

a five guys burger, fries and drink is like $15 here in canada ... i might as well goto my local place and get a burger that is organic beef with better toppings for that price ... in and out is way better value ... although on burger taste alone and the option of toppings i would go with 5 guys ...

I haven't had In 'N Out, but it would have to be darn good to be better than Five Guys. I think their burgers are the best I've had and I think the same thing about the fries. I don't think it's all that pricey. I get the small hamburger, fries and a cup of water and am out of there for $6.35. In fact, I will skip going to more expensive, gourmet burger places because I can't bear to pay more (or the same) for inferior quality.
