I really think the venues must take some responsibility for crowd control. Aren't there safety laws (e.g. fire codes, sanitation codes) that limit how many people can be crowded into a public space? I think the band does its best with their security and all, but it's up to the venue to say how many people a place can accomodate. The problem is the venues are probably just into making money off the gigs they hold and unlike the bands, don't have any connection to the fans. It's nice to be nice to the nice.0

When did this become acceptable at a Pearl Jam show post Roskilde?
I must have missed that.
What a joke
She was stretchered out from just behind me, right next to the sound desk, nothing to do with crushing or moshing or whatever. Appeared to me that she just fainted, probably one of many victims of the heat. The problem was she had to be stretchered all the way down through the central channel to the stage, right in front of Eddie... that can't have been a nice thing for him to see.
With 50,000 people you are always going to get plenty of morons, that's life. Seriously i reckon there were thousands of lads there yesterday who know very little of PJ past the obvious songs, they just went for a laugh. It happens at every event like this where the band is anything like "heavy". I'm sure it was the same at Roskilde, but the shocking security there contributed massively to the tragedy.0 -
Really good show, not as good as the indoor shows but hey its still magical watching the best band in the world perform whilst the sun goes down, Eddie made me laugh whist talking after just breath, when he did the impression of a young southern American kid cover he had seen, basically said it put him off performing the song and that’s why he messed it up0

:?: What do you mean? Some people were hot, drunk, dehydrated, too squished, etc. This happens at large gatherings, whether music or other. One doesn't know what was wrong with this lady, could have been anything. This 'focus' on Roskilde is really not necessary. It was a tragedy but a lot has been learned from it. People can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there have been any deaths at a music festival due to safety since then.

Any old excuse
It was a good impression and worth the actual messing up of the song0 -
Y'know, when David Blaine suspended himself in a glass cage for days in Central London the Brits (including some of my friends) went along every evening to throw rocks at him and shout abuse.

What is it with middle-aged bald overweight men who think they are still teenagers and have god given right to force their way to the front...

Sorry but the behaviour of those morons is not tolerated anywhere else in our society - not even at football matches any more. The band have a responsibility particularly when it is happening directly in front of them.
Honestly I no longer think they really care. The concert security passed responsibility for halting the show to the band's spotters, i.e THE BAND. They should bring their guide dogs next time.
Mrs Milan comments:
This was my seventh Peal Jam concert, and it took a (expensive) November tour of Australia to convince me that they were a band I could enjoy, though I have long been cynical of Eddie’s sychphantic spiel to the crowd. Well he demonstrated just what a hypocrite he was at Hyde Park. He decided to talk through crocodile tears about Roskilde before his ‘safety’ speech whilst in front of his nose there were numerous people being hauled from the crowd that was heaving, pressurised and full of badly behaving drunkards. Getting the priorities really right eh? His little safety talks are now just a part of the show, shallow and useless, just a part of the act, my goodness if I had been able to take one step back it would have helped, but none of the trouble makers shifted an inch. What does it take for him to put his money where his mouth is take that dime out of his pocket and stop a gig that is so obviously out of control. Had he stopped mid song this would have had a much more powerful effect and might have actually gone someway towards alleviating the problems in the crowd.
We were with a great international group of 10 club people who had make the effort to come to the gig from all over the continent as well as further flung parts of the world. We had all got there early, most of them had numerated hands from the queue fuhrer and by the time I left the melee, not one of them was left. Why bother? Why make any effort for a band that shows so little regard for their fans and for a front man whose hypocrisy is so transparent. If Vedder tries to make anything of the Rokilde anniversary in Berlin he should be ashamed, his empty words will be meaningless until he makes an effort to demonstrate by his actions that his is in anyway contrite.

Just came back to France after a few days in Ireland and England.
Hyde Park show was great. Show #8 for me but it was my first time seeing Pearl Jam in a festival. They were fantastic as always. Setlist was somehow similar to Dublin but it doesn't matter. It was good to see Ben Harper joining PJ for Red Mosquito (as well as Eddie joining Ben for Under Pressure). SOLAT is always a highlight for me. Great to hear Go and Black was awesome.
Crowd was huge and there were lots of sing along. I was like 30 meters from the stage and there was no pushing at all around me. However I saw some stupid morons throwing beer bottles ...0 -

Sounds like another awesome Pearl Jam experience to me!!! stop whining will ya?I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!
...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!0 -
Well what a relief! I don't know what it was about the Dublin gig but the band were not happy at all. In fact Stone barely faced the audience and hardly got into it. One might have suspected a combo of jet lag, exhaustion or some minor tension, however it would appear that by reading Belfast reviews and attending London the band suffered only a small hiccup with only a good show in Dublin.
I was shocked at how good the London gig was seeing that i am not the festival type at all. What was really scary was the idiots throwing partially filled plastic bottles into the crowd and witnessing many people (often females) being hit with them in the head and other places. Stupid and dangerous and this needs to be policed, otherwise a major injury isn't far off. Others perhaps used it as an excuse to write themselves off and weren't really there to enjoy PJ which is their right i suppose. Most of the crowd were great, however you got the impression that at anytime Ed could have pulled the plug.
Stone Gossard take a bow, this was your moment. Pleasing to see some excellent guitar work (even what appeared to be some soloing). I have never seen you so animated and happy at a show and it allayed any fears of tension in the band perfectly. Outside of Ed it was pleasing to see that sometimes Mike doesn't have to carry the rest of the band.
Black did it for me and most of the crowd. Looking forward to Berlin and Bilbao now, and although there were only a few changes from the Dublin list the band were in much better form and there must be a chance of getting I got i.d and breath before signing off.
My partner and I left this event very satisfied (similar feel to the Perth 2009) show, instead of what appeared to be ruthless efficiency in Dublin. There is no shame in saying a PJ concert isn't as good as another one, it doesn't lower your value as a fan, and the 10c members are not going to judge you too harshly.
London left Dublin for dead.0 -

It was.
A friend of mine came along for his first every PJ gig. He was on the grandstand with my husband. Though a bit 'removed' there, he was in awe of the band and thought they were an incredible live act (he knows their music well). He couldn't believe the crowd (of which he had a great view), not because of the pricks and some loutish behaviour, but how they respond to the band. How the band and the crowd feed of each others energy. He was amazed at the sing alongs and how, when Eddie asked for all to take three steps back, the crowd did so in unison. This friend has been around for a while (like me, no spring chicken!) and has seen many, many bands over the years but said he had never seen such synergy between a band and their fans. This was at a festival. He now needs to see them in an arena where EVERYONE is there just to see the band - no tourists!
PJ... another O2 or Shepherd's Bush next year maybe?0 -

What a joke
At the end of the day Pearl Jam can't take responsibility for what an uncouth bunch of louts us British men are. They played, they got out of there, nobody died to my knowledge, I prayed (from home - not so faraway), the band undoubtedly prayed.
I tell you one thing for certain though, the next audience members killed at a show somewhere in the world- it won't be a Pearl Jam show
To be fair whilst Brits were undoubtedly involved there were a lot of SA / Aussies pushing to the front on Mike's side...Astoria Crew
Troubled souls unite, we got ourselves tonight...
Astoria, Dublin, Reading 06
Katowice, Wembley 07
SBE, Manchester, O2 09
Hyde Park 10
Manchester 1&2 12
This is just g'bye for now...0 -
Another awesome night...not quite up to the 02 but outside it wouldn't be, and slightly ruined by so many wankers. Mike is still getting better every time i see him. the solo he played behind his head defies belief.
highlight were better man, black, amongst the waves, just breathe and under pressure with ben harper.0 -
