I have no problem with what this officer did...as others have mentioned, get your ticket, move on, and perhaps fight it in court...

The girl who got punched pushed the officer...I hope she was arrested, too...

And the I hope the soon-to-farmer never needs to call those fn cops, cuz you know, they all suck, fo reals...

I'm not trying to stir anything up..... but if your daughter or sister was getting in my face and pushing me....would it be ok for me to punch her? Knock her ass out?

Or what it have been cool for the police officer to shoot her?

if you were a police officer who was arresting some else, then I would have no problem with you attempting to do you job...

as for shooting her...I ask, did he shoot her...? the answer is no...I think you're being dramatic and naive. And that you're not looking at the situation for what it was...a police officer was attempting to arrest a combative person and another person put hands on and tried to push the officer...the officer responded...plain and simple...

When does he call for back up? At what point? I didn't see it.
Don't you think the officer is a little out of control as well? He is caught in a situation going back and forth with two teenagers who he can't control on his own.... Why wouldn't he call for back up? Why wouldn't he just mace them?
I didn't see the girls swing at him...They tried pushing his hands down and resisting arrest, but not attack him... If he felt threaten then he should have moved to a neutral position, so that he had a clear view of everyone, but instead he took it upon himself to rumble with everyone around him.... someone could have easily taken his gun!
This was a stupid situation and now the department will probably have to suffer because of this.... not only that but the officer could never really restrain the girls... its an embarrassment for the department and will probably have to fork out some money because of this.....
But you guys think it was the rational thing to do.... Yeah keep thinking like that and I'm sure a few more unprofessional incidents like this and Seattle will be broke! Because of law suites ....

watch the video again...he did call for back up...

And I love you're critique of the officers performance...he should have this and should have that...

I'll say this, he did remarkably well given the circumstances...he could have easily tossed her to the ground and really done some physical harm to the fine, upstanding lady he was trying to arrest...in fact, I'm guessing he could have picked her up and slammed her to the ground...I'm sure the crowd would have loved that...

I find it sad that you put no blame on anyone other that the police officer...

personally, i'd like to know what happened prior to the camera showing up on the scene. i wonder if opinions would change if it came out that he was simply going to give them a warning about jaywalking and was greeted with attitude.

one thing i've known for a very long time: never ever ever put your hands on an officer, even just a pat on the shoulder. these girls were grabbing him and pushing him. imo, i think he let them get away with a hell of a lot more than any other officer might have before he got really physical.

oh, and i also like that every officer that talked to the guy with the camera said "you can keep filming all you want, just keep back about 5 feet from the cruisers."

hmmm you speak of wanting to know what went on before the camera showed up and then you talk of how a civilian should never put their hands on an officer, something i agree with..... how do you know the officer didnt put his hands on the girl first precipitating the adverse reaction??? and is this acceptable... should we civilians tolerate being handled by an officer unless were being handcuffed??

attend school or go to jail.
they need schooling, they are not very bright.
and their skills in dealing with authority is questionable.
many on here view these two young ladies as children.
    they are young adults.

i've seen trash alongside I-5 for years.
jail-birds have 12 hour days to clean up the cities in and around the I-5 corridor.

    schools need created for jail-birds.
get an education, pick up trash or go to prison.
    easy shit.

btw, i should have been locked up @ least 146 different times but i out smarted the cops and i was always respectful when caught doing illegal activities.

edit: which is amazing because i've never spent 1 second in a jail cell.
    i've never wore hand cuffs.
i've been fined through the roof, gave up a lot of money over the years.
i've dealt with police forever and never once wrestled them.
    never once yelled at them.
i have told them they are nuts and fulla shit.
and i was in the right...

why is it that i can be drunk on whiskey and never receive a drunk driving infraction?
ask the iowa state patrol because i have no idea, i was barely there.

i don't know how i'd react, either. i mean, if i did something wrong and he wants me to stand by his cruiser and walks me over by holding my arm...i don't think i'd really make a big deal out of that. if he grabs my arm rough, or if he yanks or pulls on my arm, i might say something...maybe something like "easy now, i'm not resisting"

i don't know, tough call. it all depends on the situation, i guess.

sure the girls 'skills in dealing with authority' may be questionable. but youre basing your opinion on a bit of video. yuo dont know if the officer was disrespectful to the girls because of their youth. all you see is the girls 'attacking' the officer. im not saying the girls arent at fault, but im also not saying that the officer is aboce reproach. you place a great deal of faith in the education system to somehow redeem 'wayward' youth and i think youre mistaken to do so.

and thats the thing isnt it??? individuals act individually. personally i cant stand being touched, so if a stranger decided they needed to touch me for whatever reason, id feel the need to react. and the situation for me is irrelevant.

    catester, you are fun.
all i know is the camera guy missed the start of this bullshit scrimmage between a cop and 2 young ladies.
what i seen in the video is alarming and very uncool.
besides a growing mob very verbal and interested in being up close, some cop has to deal with 2 psycho chics.
not a very good time im sure.

and thats the thing isnt it??? individuals act individually. personally i cant stand being touched, so if a stranger decided they needed to touch me for whatever reason, id feel the need to react. and the situation for me is irrelevant.
fine, ask the officer to kindly remove his hands off of your shoulder or whatever.
you can't push and shove a cop, man.

if a cop walked up to me for no reason and punched me in the mouth... sure, then i'd wrestle around with the prick...

sure the girls 'skills in dealing with authority' may be questionable. but youre basing your opinion on a bit of video. yuo dont know if the officer was disrespectful to the girls because of their youth. all you see is the girls 'attacking' the officer. im not saying the girls arent at fault, but im also not saying that the officer is aboce reproach. you place a great deal of faith in the education system to somehow redeem 'wayward' youth and i think youre mistaken to do so.
    catester, you are fun.
all i know is the camera guy missed the start of this bullshit scrimmage between a cop and 2 young ladies.
what i seen in the video is alarming and very uncool.
besides a growing mob very verbal and interested in being up close, some cop has to deal with 2 psycho chics.
not a very good time im sure.

heres my question though... why is a police officer working solo???
    great question..

    budget cuts?
    busy bullshit in seattle?
his parter was jerkin it someplace?
    i have no idea...

sure we shouldnt shove a cop but respect runs both ways. i know how stroppy teenagers can get and one must be professional enough to deal with. what happened to mace????????????

i believe the video i saw was about 9 minutes long.
it's at the start of this thread.

cate, you'd much rather have that cop punch you in the face than to have him mace your face.
    believe me, mace sucks.
get it in your eyes... you're done

    i maced myself once.
i sprayed a nest of wasps in the garage.
i was like 10 yrs old... (we always had fun toys)
the mace drifted back down into my eyes.
    terrible.
and it wasn't even directly sprayed at me.
i'd rather be punched, thank you.

But that's just it, cops are not the parents or teachers of these kids and they shouldn't be expected to deal with some overly dramatic teenager's bullshit. They aren't babysitters and we shouldn't expect them to walk on eggshells around kids just because kids are stupid and prone to treat people any way they see fit. Verbally abuse a cop, or be blatantly disrespectful, or touch them in any way and you should expect bad things to happen. That is the simple reality I grew up with and managed to make work, despite my rather criminal leanings... 8-)

should we civilians tolerate being handled by an officer unless were being handcuffed??

yes...police search for weapons and such all the time...

Perhaps it would be better if the officer handed out flowers and Popsicles...

Someone might have posted this already, but:

The Seattle Police Department posted this explanation of the incident on their website:

    Officer Assaulted in South Seattle

On June 14th at approximately 3:10 p.m. a uniformed patrol officer was driving north in the 3100 block of MLK Jr. Way South in a fully marked police car. The officer observed a male pedestrian j-walk across MLK Jr. Way South, an arterial street. There is a pedestrian overpass (foot bridge) about 15 feet to the north of where the male pedestrian j-walked. The officer stopped the pedestrian. While interacting with the 18-year-old male pedestrian, the officer observed four female pedestrians j-walk at the same location that the male pedestrian just had. The officer instructed the females to step over to his vehicle. They were verbally antagonistic toward the officer. One female subject turned and began to walk away. The officer again instructed her to step over to his car. She continued to walk away and appeared to raise her hand in a dismissive gesture. The officer contacted the female subject and began escorting her back toward his car. The female subject began to tense up her arm and pull away from the officer while yelling at him. Once at the patrol car the female subject refused to obey the officer’s commands to place her hands on the car. When the officer again tried to gain control of her, she pulled away and twisted, breaking free of the officer’s grip several times.

At this time a large crowd gathered around the officer. When the officer tried to handcuff the female subject, another female subject intervened. The second female subject placed her hands on the officer’s arm, causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject’s escape. The officer pushed the second subject back, but she again came at the officer, at which time he punched her. The second subject moved away and the officer was able to handcuff the first subject and place her in the back seat of his patrol car.

As the officer contacted and subsequently escorted the second subject over to his patrol car, she too tried to pull and twist away from him. The officer restrained her until backup officers arrived, at which time the second subject was handcuffed.

Suspect #1, a 19-year-old female, was booked into the King County Jail for Obstructing an Officer. Suspect #2, a 17-year-old female, was booked into the Youth Service Center for Investigation of Assault on an Officer. Both suspects were cited for j-walking. Nobody appeared to be injured as a result of the altercation. SFD medics responded and evaluated suspect #2 as a precautionary measure.

That's very logical and reasonable, and it lines up with what the video shows.
