The Seattle Police Department posted this explanation of the incident on their website:
The officer instructed the females to step over to his vehicle. They were verbally antagonistic toward the officer. One female subject turned and began to walk away. The officer again instructed her to step over to his car. She continued to walk away and appeared to raise her hand in a dismissive gesture.
There have been people suggesting that he just call for backup and wait for help. I didn't understand that, and after reading this part of the report, I definitely don't... If the girls were blowing him off and walking away, was he supposed to just follow them around town for a few minutes until backup came?

Officer Assaulted in South Seattle
On June 14th at approximately 3:10 p.m. a uniformed patrol officer was driving north in the 3100 block of MLK Jr. Way South in a fully marked police car. The officer observed a male pedestrian j-walk across MLK Jr. Way South, an arterial street. There is a pedestrian overpass (foot bridge) about 15 feet to the north of where the male pedestrian j-walked. The officer stopped the pedestrian. While interacting with the 18-year-old male pedestrian, the officer observed four female pedestrians j-walk at the same location that the male pedestrian just had. The officer instructed the females to step over to his vehicle. They were verbally antagonistic toward the officer. One female subject turned and began to walk away. The officer again instructed her to step over to his car. She continued to walk away and appeared to raise her hand in a dismissive gesture. The officer contacted the female subject and began escorting her back toward his car. The female subject began to tense up her arm and pull away from the officer while yelling at him. Once at the patrol car the female subject refused to obey the officer’s commands to place her hands on the car. When the officer again tried to gain control of her, she pulled away and twisted, breaking free of the officer’s grip several times.
At this time a large crowd gathered around the officer. When the officer tried to handcuff the female subject, another female subject intervened. The second female subject placed her hands on the officer’s arm, causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject’s escape. The officer pushed the second subject back, but she again came at the officer, at which time he punched her. The second subject moved away and the officer was able to handcuff the first subject and place her in the back seat of his patrol car.
As the officer contacted and subsequently escorted the second subject over to his patrol car, she too tried to pull and twist away from him. The officer restrained her until backup officers arrived, at which time the second subject was handcuffed.
Suspect #1, a 19-year-old female, was booked into the King County Jail for Obstructing an Officer. Suspect #2, a 17-year-old female, was booked into the Youth Service Center for Investigation of Assault on an Officer. Both suspects were cited for j-walking. Nobody appeared to be injured as a result of the altercation. SFD medics responded and evaluated suspect #2 as a precautionary measure.

"ummm... hey you... stop.... no, really... stop.... please.... hey... get back here... i mean it..."
It's very clear to me.
It wasn't "stop of I'll say stop again". It was "stop, or I'll stop you".

A few hundred Comments have already been made that We all agree that the girls acted stupidly in this situation(based on the video- and on the Wild's post)
That is clear and Done...
the problem is the punch to the face...
Of course the officer was trying to handle this on his own, but when it escalated he no longer had control - At that point he should have called for back up..... At just about any point someone could have pulled his gun.... which is not "Having control" of the situation, as someone stated.
It is clear he couldn't handle the situation on his own.. 4 girls involved- a male suspect and tons of other people around him, who could easily be considered suspects as well.
I guess it all depends on how you view the video because I never sow the women assault him, nor threaten him- It looks clear that they were resisting arrest, but in no way were they attacking him with a clinched fist or weapon.
My problem is how the officer handled this....
If that had been two giant male suspects - I am sure he would have either maced them or called for back up because if he couldn't handle these two woman who were about his size, if not shorter - there would be no way he could have handled two larger men.
The officer is a trained professional - am sure there are tactics to dealing with this situation more appropriately.
And why did over 10 police officers show up at the end? What did the officer say when he finally called for back up? Did he say that their were about 20 people around him, who maybe he didn't know what their intentions were?

You're making it sound like the girls were just being uncooperative by saying "acted stupidly". I'll agree that the 1st suspect was "acting stupidly" by resisting arrest, and the cop was trying to detain her fairly carefully. Did he punch the 1 girl who was "acting stupidly" by resisting? No. He didn't.
The 2nd suspect was more than acting stupidly. She wasn't involved in the struggle between the 1st suspect and the officer. She started shoving (assaulting) a police officer. She created a physical altercation on her own That's more than "acting stupidly". It's assault.
So to stop the 2nd suspect from continually assaulting the officer with her hands while he was busy trying to detain another suspect, he decisively stopped her with his hands. ...and it worked.
There's a difference between "acting stupidly" and "assault". And he treated the suspects differently, based on their behavior.

How do you not understand or not see that the police officer put himself in a poor situation.... Being tangled up with the girls... One male suspect was at one point directly behind him. Could have easily pulled his gun and shot him! Someone could have easily hit the officer from behind..... How is that control of the situation?
Totally unaware of the entire situation.... putting himself in harms way... If these girls really wanted to hurt him, they had plenty of opportunities to take a good shot at his head, when he wasn't looking...
Why did so many police officer show up at that end? It was like the whole department showed up...
Your ignoring the facts, and how this is going to end up costing the department because the officer acted unprofessionally.... It's sad because those girls don't deserve squat!
Now others will see this and think they can easily provoke an officer... Had he taken a step back during all the heat and call for back up ....no one would have been punched ...they would have been arrested and they wouldn't have any case against the department. ....

They have no case whatsoever.

I hope you're right-
But if I see it wrong for a Man to bunch a woman in the face (especially a teen), then a jury might see it the same way.... No doubt that they too will be charged, but I do see them receiving some kind of settlement- because the officer could have handled the situation much better. This was not a bank robbery or someone being killed where the officer had to act immediately .... The officer needs to have some self awareness that the world is watching ....All those cameras around him and he still has the nerve to start answering questions to some of these people.... That is a liability! "Everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law"
I'm betting there is no action taken by the department against the officers, and any legal action the 2 suspects take against the officer will result in nothing as well. The video supports the officer's actions.
...anyone else care to take a guess at what will come of this in upcoming days/weeks/months?

you do not know... we do not know if he was on his police radio before the cameraman showed up.
earlier in every message you typed you said "why didn't he call for back up?"
he frickin did...

Just to be clear
when i say, "why did he call for back up" - I mean before the altercation .... when things started to get heated... The minute the woman started to resist.... There were 4 women and 1 male suspects.... Plus many people around who could have a motive....
If they were two Giant men and they started resisting do you think he would have taken the same approach?
Do you think he could have punched a 6ft man? and not worried about the other man cleaning his clock from behind? I think he thought the situation was under control, which by the video it seems he was very unprofessional because he was never protecting his back side from potential threats ....
That's my point ..it could have been handled much better.

Come on .... this is common sense sense....
...
I see your point... the punch in the face... but, I disagree with you. The punch was the first level of force when the suspects clearly showed that they were not going to comply with verbal instructions.
The first level of force is physical restraint... since the girls were resisting him pulling them by the arm... THEY, the girls, force the cop to up the level of force... a punch, wrestle to the ground, a choke hold (which has pretty much been outlawed because of the deaths caused by it).
...
The Common Sense lies not with the officer... but, with the girls.

Maybe he should have slammed the first girl to the ground or to the police car to gain control of her. I think he was trying not to hurt the first girl, then the second one decided to try to help her friend.

Your right- The situation forced the cop to the level of force.... I just think he should have maced them- and moved to a neutral ground. Where he could see the whole field... he was wrestling with one while the other could have easily pulled his gun or hit him from behind.... the situation was not in the officers control...
Lack of Common Sense lies with the girls, no doubt............. but the officer handled the situation, as it presented/transformed itself in different situations poorly. He could have really gotten hurt here, but because he was determined to make the arrest he put himself, in what could have potentially been a deadly situation.
I do not believe in a Man Striking a women in the face. That's my opinion ... mace her, drop her to the ground, club her leg, but take control of the situation.... The officer didn't call for back up until 3.15min later... and when back up showed up .... it seemed as if the whole department showed up....
These girls were completely at fault....in my opinion, but now because of how the situation was handled I do believe they will receive some kind of settlement for the fist to the face...

No... mace would come into play if the cop was losing a physical altercation. Mace is FAR worse than a punch. I know for a fact... I'd much rather take one punch to the jaw than a face full of mace.

I guess this comes down to personal preference..of being punched in the face or being maced... ....I know mace must be horrible I've been in places where it had been used and you can smell its strength........But I'm speaking in terms of containing the situation ...and taking appropriate actions to control the environment......The officer clearly had his back to potential threats...

"The situation" was someone physically assaulting him. He used similar methods to stop the person, just like if a person drew a gun on him, he would have used a similar method.
Mace doesn't just affect the one person. Mace travels in the air and with the potential for hurting quite a number of innocent bystanders, he chose to do something that would affect 1 person, in a similar manner in how he was being assaulted.

good point. I have also been maced. It was an accident too. I was next to a guy that got maced by a crazed drunk girl. I would also rather get punched in the jug than maced in the face.

Dude your missing the point.... was he able to contain the situation? No... he was still struggling with both girls... did the bunch fix the problem? No ...it would have had the same affect if he had simply pushed her away... was he in a potentially dangerous situation? Yes... anyone of those persons could have taken his gun...
why aren't you seeing the point?

You're missing the point.
"The situation" was that he was working on carefully detaining 1 person who was resisting arrest. A second person decided to create a new-situation, and began assaulting him, presumably to prevent him from doing his job. He stopped that person from assaulting him, and continued to detain the first person. He realized the second person was assaulting him and was a growing threat, and he took decisive action. What would "pushing her back" have done? Given him about 2 seconds of peace? That is not the same effect as what he ended up doing like you are suggesting it would be.

i cannot believe adults cannot watch a clear video and see what is happening.
this is preposterous, outrageous, absurd, & ludicrous.
all because 2 young women are irrational or illogically violent towards a police officer.

Two women were on him at several moments during the altercation...Had that one guy not taken one of the girls off of him, she could have easily pulled his gun? Is that a good position to be in?
There were a total of four woman at the begging and 1 man....
If he had been dealing with two large men ...do you honestly think it would have played out the same way? Do you think he would have thought to himself that maybe he wouldn't be able to handle two men? And he would need to call for back up? or pull a weapon out? Especially if they are charging him? He couldn't detain one women who was much smaller in size.... My point is that he allowed a bad situation to potentially get worst ...with out taking the proper precautions..... at any moment he could have easily been attacked.... Because these girls weren't threatening him ..it made it much easier for him to handle them.... He didn't really connect on the punch...The girl went back because she was shocked .... I think that's why the nation is shocked.... a police officer punching a girl in the face... If that wouldn't have happened no one would have really cared.... I know I wouldn't .... it happens everyday....

There have been people suggesting that he just call for backup and wait for help. I didn't understand that, and after reading this part of the report, I definitely don't... If the girls were blowing him off and walking away, was he supposed to just follow them around town for a few minutes until backup came?

It's very clear to me.
It wasn't "stop of I'll say stop again". It was "stop, or I'll stop you".

Come on .... this is common sense sense....
I couldn't agree more.

Had he taken a step back during all the heat and call for back up ....no one would have been punched ...they would have been arrested and they wouldn't have any case against the department. ....
Plain and simple....
Wrong...
Their frivolous light minded bullshit behavior will get them nowhere in a court of law.
They have no case whatsoever.
Al Sharpton, isn't even answering phone calls from these two clowns.
It's that ridiculous.

"Everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law"
...anyone else care to take a guess at what will come of this in upcoming days/weeks/months?

Hail, Hail!!!
I guess I'm done on this subject......
