    After just listening to it on good speakers for the first time, it really does feel like Into The Wild. And I agree that there could have been some instrumentation added here from an outside source, so maybe this is a song that Ed worked on with the creator of the score. But it wouldn't surprise me if it came from the BS session either, as I could see Brendan O Brien being the guy responsible for the music being the way it is.

    Another reason I don't think it's from ITW is cus if youve been to or heard ed's solo shows he's really not afraid to break out anything, Arc for example, I think he would have played something that was recorded with such great quality.

    The recording archive site that was listed by someone else here links it to Riot Act and that site hasn't been updated since 2003. The website that this song (which I really like by the way) can be heard (not downloaded) was updated with strikeouts over self-titled and backspacer, leaving riot act as the source. As much as people may have trained ears and musical deduction skills, we can only really go by the information that is out there and this point. In this case, it consistently points towards the riot act recording sessions as the origin. obvioulsy it could have been reworked and what not much later than that, but it seems pretty clear that this is when the song originated.

    Its far from my favorite, but its cool... I can understand why they left it off though - I dont see this fitting so well even on Riot Act.

    Good point. Look at the Zeppelin 4 and Houses of the Holy songs that ended up on Physical Graffiti, and Walter's Walk on Coda was a case where the song was from the Houses of the Holy era, a riff was used on Presence, and when it finally appeared on Coda, Plant had recorded the vocal track in the early 80's after Bonham died, obviously, for the album's release. So what I'm saying, this wouldn't be the first time a band finisher and released earlier material, at a later time.

    ok, it's established there was a song recorded in the riot act sessions called better days and it clearly didn't make the album. now, monkeywrench was involved with and only with riot act. however, this song sounds nothing like the riot act era, especially ed. there is alot of production and usage of extra instruments and it is very "new" and uplifting sounding. also, on the monkeywrench website it said something like "gary, kelly wanted you to hear this". i say that pj re-recorded and re-worked this song for possibly backspacer or an ep after it or whatever and the people at monkeywrench remember the song and how it didnt make it, etc .. maybe they got word from kelly kurtis that the band re-worked it for something and one person from monkeywrench was showing another.

    so i say it is a riot act outtake that got re-recorded/re-arranged for either backspacer, an ep, or next album. brendan obrian must have done something with this.

    as far as the song i think it's simply phenomenal.
    incredibly uplifting and the lyrics are absolutely amazing.
    great work.
    start digging more stuff up! come on pj!

    Nobody else got a No Code vibe from the song? the sitar made me think of the version of Long Road with Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. I'm not saying this song is from No Code. I don't really care when its from. I would love to know the backstory just for the sake of pearl jam nerdery. All I definitely know is that I like it.

    but back to this new song...listening to it sounds like Ed now...listening to the lyrics...I wonder if it wasn't a song from Riot Act era that's been redone... maybe even partially rewritten...parts rhyme others don't...this song is beautiful full of everything just like the song speaks of... many different worlds...I hear Indian(india), Spanish... it's a bucket full of sounds layering all over each other culminating into a joyous uprising into a new and Better Days...


    My favorite line is (I hope it's ok to post this):

    What the hell are you talking about? "Monkeywrench" in this sense refers to the band's record label, which is run by their management.

    "The people at Monkeywrench"? The people "at" Monkeywrench are just the band and their management. You're making this into more than it is - this is just a song that Pearl Jam's manager and Gary Westlake, another Curtis Management/PJ-related person, were passing around for whatever reason.

    Right, and in fact Monkeywrench actually had nothing to do with Riot Act, it was all Sony. Monkeywrench is bascially everything since Riot Act. I think the Man of the Hour single might have been the first release on it, but I can't find it right now to confirm that. Otherwise I think Self-Titled was a Monkeywrench/J Records collaboration, Into the Wild was at least a Monkeywrench collab, and Backspacer was a Monkeywrench only record (with a little help from Target). But as he said above me, Monkeywrench is no one more than the band and their camp and management.

    I definitely got the No Code vibe too. I guess I would have to say it's only reminiscent of No Code and Long Road, but sounds like it was recorded recently. The vocals are way more 2009 than 1994 or 2002.

    Anybody think that accordian sound may be a Hurdy-Gurdy?

    Plant/Page used a Hurdy-Gurdy very effectively on the No Quarter album. Also, it's that thing Page was playing in Song Remains the Same when he turned around and his eyes were red lights.

    Everyone keeps referring to the "guitar" solo. I don't see how I'm the only one to realize this, but it is definitely a mandolin there.

    I love the lyrics. I'm just not a fan of the accordion/melody. Great lyrics, though. That's just my opinion. I'm glad others love it.
