Yeah, it's a lot like the grand old tradition of letting umpires screw up and not doing anything to correct it when you can. Arguing doesn't take away from the game...but missed calls like the one last night damn sure do.
I do love the arguments and the managers making asses of themselves as much as the next guy, but to stubbornly stand by a call that was obviously made in error when it affects the history of the game in such a big way makes absolutely no sense to me. We're talking about something that has only happened 20 times in the history of the game here....what is really being preserved by not giving the guy proper credit for his perfect game?

there are ways besides instant replay to get calls right. I think the umps should do a better job of asking for help on close calls. they are too stubborn at times. to review every close play would be a mistake though. bad calls are part of the game. if you're gonna review every close play then there's no need for umpires.

Few things happen in life that bother me. Not that I'm impervious to tragedies but most shit I could give a fuck about. Like, I don't care that the guy from the single-wide turned down $200,000 to pick another briefcase on Deal or No Deal. I don't give a shit who Jennifer Anniston is fucking this week or how long Brad Pitt's goatee is now. I realize those aren't tragedies but some people really get emotional over that horse shit.

However, this is an injustice to humanity. I mean, this motherfucker threw a perfect game in the Big Leagues. I didn't throw a perfect game in Dixie Youth Baseball....AND I'M FUCKING AWESOME.

What's sad is that millions of baseball fans will bitch about it and they actually have the power to change the call. You could still get it changed within a week. All you have to do is keep your fat, hot dog eating ass at home for 1 single week and boycott the game. If Bud Selig saw every single MLB game this week unattended, he'd reverse that shit.

Think about it...NOLAN GODDAMN RYAN didn't throw a perfect game. More people have seen fucking UFO's than perfect games. Let's be honest. I've seen a unicorn. I've fucked a leprechaun...twice. But I've never personally witnessed a perfect game. I hope Bud Selig gets a phone call from his doctor tomorrow saying that he has AIDS in his face.

I actually agree with you way more than it might seem because no way do I want every close play to be reviewed such as the phantom-foot-on-second when turning the double play. I just want there to be some kind of common sense rule for reviews. Hell, if it has to be like football and each manager gets a couple of challenges per game that would be fine by me.
I'm like hammerdonkey about this...this ain't small potatoes here. This is a big damn deal and there needs to be some way to avoid having it happen again

And another fucking thing while I'm riled up...

I'd be willing to bet my soul that any male on this board from 20-45 years old could pitch against my son's 9 year old travel baseball team from their mound distance (which is 46 feet 4 inches) and your ass wouldn't pitch a perfect game.

That's how hard it is to do. And that's against small children. This guy was pitching against the elite hitters the world has to offer. The worst MLB team is better than any baseball team we've ever played on.

This has made me so mad that my asshole grew a mouth and frowned.

this kid definitely deserved a perfect game. the ump made a horrible call. should it be overturned by selig? no, it shouldn't. he can't set a precedent like that. i think maybe mlb ought to look into having challenges, like the nfl has. let each coach have one or two challenges per game. if the umps can't see overwhelming evidence to reverse the call within 5-10 minutes of reviewing the play, then the original call stands.

it's funny, i've seen the polls all day today "should bud selig reverse the umps decision and give the kid a perfect game?" and all the polls say yes he should...but i think one of the big reasons he won't is because even the pitcher (i don't know how to spell his name, so i'm not even going to try to) said after the game "it is what it is, i'm not going to dwell on it, we've still got a long season to go."

i'm not sure what precedent it would set? bottom of the 9th, 2 out perfect game in the balance precedent? ok

the pine tar call was reversed...that was 1983 and that game was resumed from the point of the incident whereas this call would end the game...how many times has the commissioner reversed a call since? none that i know of

I disagree. Yeah it sucks to have not gotten a perfect game but I think Galarraga comes off looking great from this. Nobody disputes that it was a perfect game (except the boxscore) and the way he handled this (from his reaction to the safe call to his post-game comments to handing the ump the line-up card the next day) makes him look better than he would if he had gotten the out call at the end.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that it's looking like this game could lead to unprecedented changes in baseball in regards to instant replay.
In other words, every hard-core baseball fan will know who Armando Galarraga is, where as if the game would have been called correctly, he would just be one of 21 guys.
I think he's gotten a lot more attention/notoriety because it was botched.

    My opinion???

Selig is nothing but a complete asshole, for not giving the kid his perfect game.

I dont give a rats ass about precedent, or rule changes, or what should have been, could have been, blah blah blah.

Selig should have taken all of 20 seconds, and given that kid his perfect game.

I thought it was a real nice moment before the game yesterday. +1 to all involved.

No way it should be overturned. It would set a terrible precedent.

Baseball is great in part because it is a neat game which is played by and officiated by humans who are prone to error... in ways its a throwback to American heritage. Sometimes blown calls happen... also one of the reasons that it is so difficult to throw a perfect game.
I dont think this should change instant replay at all either.

Everyone knows this pitcher deserves a perfect game and has basically given him credit for it. They also now know him as a very classy character and he has a lot more fans now than if he actually threw the perfect game.

edit: Bud Selig is still a douchebag.

    precedent shmecedent!!!!!

They should have given that kid his perfect game....

THEN they could have worked on utilizing instant replay in the future.
THEN they could have worked on rule changes regarding instant replay...

Selig and major league baseball BLEW IT!!!!!

Well, my baby boy (9 years old) goes out tonight and pitches his first perfect game. He was also about 5 feet from hitting a HR.

    We won 15-0. Proud day.

Someone alert the Bigs. We're ready.
