“The so-called migrant caravan that's slowly making its way to the U.S. from Central America is many things to many people. But one thing seems pretty certain: it's not about seeking ‘asylum,’ or ‘refugee status.’ It's about getting to the United States at all costs,” the Investor’s Business Daily editorial board writes. “It's time we take our border seriously, or we'll end up like those countries in Europe and the Mideast who find their nations no longer governable.”

What countries in Europe and the Middle East find themselves "no longer governable?"
I don't understand why they think these two things are mutually exclusive. Or, I should say, I don't understand why they think enough Americans are stupid enough to believe those things are mutually exclusive... Oh wait... Trump voters. Right.
I may not be reading your statement right, but there are specific definitions for refugee and asylum. And financial gain is not one of them.
Who said anything about financial gain?
But if you think of it in terms of "seeking a better, safe life", that necessarily involves trying to reach financial stability, right?
Have you looked up the definition for refugee and asylum seekers?

I know what they are, obviously. I don't know where you're going with this.... You know they have to actually establish lives in the place they land, right? And that they are indeed seeking a better, safe life, instead of whatever it is they are fleeing or suffering from?

financial gain, in this context, to me, means they are coming to 'freeload' or 'get rich off the backs of hardworking americans'. which i do not believe for one second. i believe they are simply looking to flee their oppressors and to give themselves and their kids a decent shot at life. that's what america was 'founded' on.

It’s fun watching the right try to argue simultaneously for a restrictive, narrow interpretation of the 14th amendment and a broad, loose interpretation of the 2nd.

Financial gain for me means financial gain. To gain financially.

That isn’t necessarily freeloading. I guess it could be. But I went to college to get a degree and eventually have a financial gain... no free loading.

My opinion is that Team Trump Treason should stop blowing it out his ass as most illegal immigrants arrive by air and overstay their visas, not by pouring over the southern border and he and his family should stop selling condos and apartments to Russians coming here to have anchor babies. Why aren’t we closing the airports? You know, invasion.

Every source I’ve seen puts over 50% of illegal immigrants coming from Mexico, and about 70% coming from Mexico/Central America.
So yes, most are coming through the southern border.

If you can't really put a number on 'how many illegals' are in the US other than the ones that did overstay their Visas then you can't really prove this can you?

At this time the amount of people "who have been caught" entering the US illegally is about 1100 people a day, roughly 400,000 a year.  If more than 400,000 people a year are overstaying their Visas then that's a perfect example of people not doing their jobs or that the US really doesn't care at all about that...

You may have brought up another part of our immigration poicies that needs a serious overhaul too.

Further this, 600,000 people overstayed their Visas in 2017.

Remember that only 400,00 people were caught. so the border crossing idea of most points of entry is plausible.

first 2 Google searches on the subject:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States

    https://www.migrationpolicy.org/data/unauthorized-immigrant-population/state/US

Both put Mexico over 50% and Mexico + SA over 70%.
I've never actually seen a source that didn't put Mexico first, so I'd be interested where you got your information that most illegal immigrants come by plane or overseas or other sources than the southern border.

But again see my above argument.

As you pointed out, that 400,000 is how many were caught. I think it is safe to say illegal crossings is a bigger problem, especially since that number was 1 million just a decade ago. So the fact it is even close is new within the last few years.

But I will admit I was not aware that the number of visa overstays is as big as it is. Although, the article did say that number dropped by about 80,000 by the following month, so it seems likely that the over-stay problem could be temporary for many of them.
I thought it was interesting the culprits for visa overstays are Canada first and Mexico second.

Something I’ve not seen discussed here is illegals who have fake documents.

I live in Dallas. A couple of years ago I worked with a catering company, which had a high percentage of Hispanic workers. I asked one guy his story of coming to the USA. Little opportunity in his country so he paid to get snuck in, then paid “a guy” for fake papers. He now has a SS #, license, he’s good to go. He said most of the companies workers did it that way and the owners pretend not to know that the papers presented for the I-9 are not legitimate.

So, he pays taxes. I don’t recall if I asked him if he files a tax return or not.
What struck me was how easy he said it was if you know “a guy” who supplies the papers.  He didn’t know where these SS #’s come from.

So, there’s a whole other issue of enforcement that’s lacking, though how would you catch this?

crackdown on those that hire them. stiffer penalties so if they get caught employing them, the risk (hiring illegals) is not worth the reward (low payroll).

but then americans would bitch they can't afford anything, american business owners would bitch they can't afford to operate, or even operate at all with the staff shortages, the small business owner would disappear. poverty would increase (in the beginning, the people would still come here but wouldn't be able to find work).

my question is: how many american citizens honestly have a hard time finding a job like working for a catering company at a salary they can live with?

The employers in the above situation were presented with I-9 documents that appear to be legit. They know they aren’t only because over time, they have gotten to know their employees who revealed their stories. This particular catering co. takes very good care of it’s employees. Pays well, treats them like family.

and that's fine. I'm sure they do. but americans can't have it both ways. either you want full enforcement, and prices go up and small business owners disappear, or you let it happen and tell the unskilled american he doesn't "deserve" employment, it's not a right,  you can fight for it just like everyone else does.

We can enforce and demand higher wages.

We really should demand higher wages but we know that will never happen...

That's strange.  I don't see that in the amendment.  Can you point to the actual language in the amendment that supposedly settles it?
