Even Eddie Van Halen has admitted he's over-rated. Anyone who knows anything about guitar knows that the technical players are nothing more than robots following notes. Players like Hendrix and McCready play with an inner emotion that only a handful can reach. Some of the folks in this thread make me laugh, I know it's hard sometimes not to follow the sheep but lets not be asinine here.
Cready gets da nod.0 -

"Robots following notes"
"The technical players"
You make it sound like it is simple to play like EVH or Joe Satriani. Anyone who knows anything about guitar knows that the technical players need to have a huge understanding of music theory and the various modes and scales to play the music they do. I hear stories about Eric Johnson getting certain tones based on the finger he uses to pluck the strings. These folks immersed themselves into the guitar. Please penalize them for their huge knowledge about music theory and virtuoso versatility. To say they don't play with heart is what is asinine.
Plus, EVH is not all about the solo. He has written tons of great songs over the years.
McCready plays just about all his solos in the pentatonic scales. There is not a lot of variety to his playing. I think that is McCready's limitation. I don't think the majority of his solos are memorable because they lack melody and structure which is why some Even Flow solos click and some don't. He's got great chops, and they work well with this band, but like Speedy McCready said in a post above, McCready (Mike not Speedy) is not mentioned in the top 50 rock guitarist lists and it is not because the media and music people have a bias. I remember (may have been the Pittsburgh 2003 show) that Ed let Mike play a little speed metal. It was one of the most fun 15 seconds of McCready playing I heard. I wish Mike was allowed to play more different styles.
The only time I have a negative thing to say about a band member's ability on this board is when you all make them out to be gods. Mike Mccready is the reason I learned guitar by the way.
Being a great rhythm player is in my opinion much more difficult that being a good soloist, which gives EVH the nod in this argument.0 -
bootlegger10 wrote:This thread is as ridiculous as the Jimmy Page vs. Mike McCready thread. If a band had a better solo guitarist than Eddie Van Halen they wouldn't have released their latest album with only two guitar solos on it (i.e., Backspacer).
Eddie Van Halen wins this battle in a landslide. There is a reason Eddie Van Halen is so worshipped in the guitar magazines. I'll listen to Pearl Jam over Van Halen any day, but I know that EVH is in a different universe as a guitar, regardless of whatever style the two play.
You can like watching Seth Rogan movies more than Al Pacino movies, but that doesn't mean that Seth Rogan is a better actor than Al Pacino.
+1000000 I am not a Van Halen fan by ANY means, but the guy is one of the top 10 guitar players of all time. McCready, as great as he is, is not in the conversation. Sorry guys.0 -
so in summary: people who like Pearl Jam and dont know anything about guitar vote Mike
everyone else on Earth votes Eddie.

Another point I'd like to make...Someone mentioned a Mt Rockmore for guitarist and said Mike would be on it for Alt. Rock.....I'd say Stone deserved the honor more than Mike. Kurt Cobain, Jerry Cantrell, Thayil, Billy Corgan, Adam Jones, Frusciante, Johnny Greenwood are all people I'd put up there before Mike and that's only including maintream alt rock.
Another mentioned to 50 of all time.... Mike's not in the top 100 and maybe not 200...I love Mike but he doesn't have an original style, in his lead playing or signature sounds he uses when writing. Plus, he doesn't write many songs, most guitarists that are mentioned have written dozens .0 -
Pearl Jam is a classic case of the sum of the parts being lesser than the total of the whole.
They all contribute something which when put together becomes something amazing. In sporting terms, a team of champions is nowhere near a champion team.
If you put Ed's lyrics over a Flock Of Seagulls tune - it would suck.
If you put Stone's riffs in a Creed song - it would suck.
Jeff's bass in Oasis - it would suck
Matt's beat's in a techno song would suck.
Mike's solo in a Nicklecrap song would suck.
Boom in Bronski Beat would just be plain sad.
But put them all together and they could cover songs by any of these bands and kill them - or create the amazing songs we love them for.0 -
Alright, well, let's make this simple.
Here is a Mike McCready solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2IrGshrgHM
Here is an Eddie Van Halen solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdFJTbaFcZ0
You tell me which one is better. If hope can grow from dirt like me ...0 -

Mike's a wailer, EVH is a shredder. Who is better at what he does should be the question."First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win ."
