How old are you? why do i get the feeling you were born in the late 80's?0 -

Exactly!
Mike is an awesome guitarist for sure, I think he is very underrated , but EVH is one of the greatest guitarist ever, hands down. If you asked 10 non Pearl Jam fans, who is a better guitarist, 9 out of 10 of them would say "Mike who"?0 -
Mike is God.."...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”0 -

The clear choice here is Mike.
Please. That doesn't describe EVH at all. The man literally redefined the way the instrument is played.
Everyone here loves Mike but let's not get crazy.DAL-7/5/98,10/17/00,6/9/03,11/15/13

Look at it this way:
Eruption v Yellow Ledbetter...
I'm not into finger tapping and dive bombing whammy. I'll go with Mike, but it is a matter of style, not ability.0 -
Apples and Oranges.
But I will say, I've always felt EVH is SUPER over-rated..."The goal of a coach is to take a guy who has beaten down by his parents, by religion, by society, to take that guy and build him back up to find his spirit to go out and fight" Joe Lewis0 -
Perhaps i shouldn't have phrased it, Who's better? .....0

Who do you prefer may have been better, but then the answers may be biased on this forum. Maybe we could look at it this way.
Would there be a Mccready if there had not been an EVH or SRV or Ace Frehely or Brian May. Would ther ehave been any of these guys if there had not been a Jimmy Hendrix or Jimmy Page? Would there have been any of these guys if there had not been a Chuck Berry et al?0 -

I like your point of veiw0 -
I saw Van Halen at the Hartford Civic Center back in 1984 and the most memorable moment of the night was when the band took a break and Eddie walked to the front of the stage and sat down and ripped his guitar to shreds for about 20 minutes. I had seats behind the stage and Michael Anthony was back there draining JD like it was Kool Aid.
Amazing show for a 14 y/o... and Eddie's solo picking during the break left a lasting impression. My guess is Mike is just as good -- if not better -- because he's kept his edge over the years. How does the old saying go? "The star that shines twice as bright burns half as long?"
Eddie was great but Mike has been great for a long while now... the other old-timers on this forum will know what I mean.0 -
I find it hard to read this thread when in reading other threads people are saying that they never heard Van Halen songs before. You can have what you prefer obviously, but to say who is better without even knowing who VH is is silly. Learn the VH catalog and see all of Eddie's versatility before you can say things like he is one dimensional. The man revolutionized the guitar in his era much the same way Hendrix did in his era. Like others have said before me, Mike would probably say Eddie is better and one of his influences. They are both great, both have their own style and there really is no good reason to compare, other than to argue personal preferences. When Eddie started out he used to play his guitar solos with his back to the crowd to keep people from copying his style. The man is insane. Mike is very underrated, but Eddie does deserve all of the praise he has obtained over the years. Pure genius.0

This thread is as ridiculous as the Jimmy Page vs. Mike McCready thread. If a band had a better solo guitarist than Eddie Van Halen they wouldn't have released their latest album with only two guitar solos on it (i.e., Backspacer).
Eddie Van Halen wins this battle in a landslide. There is a reason Eddie Van Halen is so worshipped in the guitar magazines. I'll listen to Pearl Jam over Van Halen any day, but I know that EVH is in a different universe as a guitar, regardless of whatever style the two play.
You can like watching Seth Rogan movies more than Al Pacino movies, but that doesn't mean that Seth Rogan is a better actor than Al Pacino.0 -
Atomic Punk and bootlegger10 - thank you.
You know EVH is one of the all time great rhythm players too so it isn't just solo ability. Some of the people on this thread make me laugh.DAL-7/5/98,10/17/00,6/9/03,11/15/13

EVH is a legend. He isn't just a shredder at all. There's no smoke and mirrors. He's just the fast. There's a reason Mike nailed that solo last night. He's been practicing it since EVH became one of his idols0
