Yeah, just imagine if he were to put his opinions into the songs? He might accidentally influence someone to think in a way that is different from what they are used to thinking. OMG!!! He is the devil. :twisted:0 -

Ed would probably agree that his "kill themselves" comment was way over the line so give the OP a break.
What is ridiculous is that Ed blasts the lobbyists when the politicians Pearl Jam support (and write songs for) take money from the lobbyists and you don't get a peep out of Eddie. Change we can all believe in. We'll take money from Goldman Sachs until the shit hits the fan and the media finds out.
Most of you on this board are hypocrites. If the band was pro-life, pro-gun, pro-religion I would bet a HUGE percentage of you would be complaining or would have never listened to the band to begin with. This has been debated to no end in the past, but it is true and most of the people here would be crying like babies if Ed ever said something pro-conservative and would do more than just walk out of a concert. They would probably go home and cry and wonder how they fell in love with this band and do a lot of soul searching.
You live in worlds where you believe guns create criminals, where babies make people poor and not happy, etc...0 -
It's a good thing you overly sensitive types don't listen to metal. You wouldn't make it through the first verse of any Slayer song without crying.
It's rock and roll. Deal with it.0 -

So singing a cover song is political? I guess that makes Green Day political because they've covered Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance." I suppose Eminem is political too because he's mentioned George Bush's name in songs. Dude, you don't get it. If he was "political" as you and Cradles Broken Glass say he is, he'd write opinion articles or appear on Bill Maher or do SOMETHING in addition to giving drunken rants from the stage. Anyone could rant to 20,000 fans who already paid $100 to see him. I'd like to see how his opinions would fare in debate on some MSNBC or Foxnews show.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. No one's talking about his lyrics. We're talking about his on-stage talking. But you bring up a good point with the lyrics. He's such a great lyricist that he should just let the lyrics do the talking. hardly...his lyrics show someone very informed and with a strong opinion

I'm glad to see that I as right, lol. I would be disappointed to find out that I've been religiously listening to PJ and watching PJ dvds for 10+ years and not no anymore about them than that. Also, I would like to add that one time I saw PJ and they strayed from commenting on anything political. Another, Ed made his case in a very respectful and informed way to the audience. I have great respect for these guys and all they do. However, I'm sure the DC show was him talking before he thought and I think we are all guilty of that at times.Hearts and thoughts they fade....
fade away...
I am at peace with my lust.....for Eddie.0 -
I think we should only attend events where we'll hear things to our liking. Likewise, folks who like to preach should only do so when they know they'll have a receptive audience.
I don't know why you'd want to try and persuade people who think differently from you. Our weekend BBQs should be limited to only people who agree with one another, and our sports events should only have one side's fans attend.

I stand by my claim that when Eddie TALKS politics onstage, he comes off like the left-wing celebrities that were portrayed as mindless in Team America. When he's riffing on things, it's just too much "fuck people who don't agree with my views" type of rhetoric. Song lyrics are another story. As are onstage speeches describing what may have inspired certain songs. But his speech at Bristow that inspired this thread was a perfect example of an Eddie speech gone wrong. Does anyone in the crowd care what Eddie Vedder has to say about Goldman-Sachs? Well I sure don't but I know that some people in the crowd do. But those who do care are treated to the suggestion that lobbyists should kill themselves.
But whatever, I sure didn't walk out of the show and as long as he brings the goods when he's singing (as he always does), I'm fine with having to endure hearing what's on his mind.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. It totally sucked the life right out of the show for me. I understand that Eddie had the right to speak his mind, but I thought that comment was so crass and ignorant and it really upset me. When they started "The Fixer" I couldn't even move I was so stunned and upset and I looked at my brother and we both said "let's leave". And there were quite a few people leaving when we were (just before the first encore).
I certainly don't look to the band to be my moral compass, but to marginalize someone's life and suicide I think is irresponsible. After 13 years in the fan clubs and almost 20 shows I can't say I am excited about seeing them again.
I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.
Wow, you are a real small minded jackass.
I don't recall when EV said it put he thanked the crowd for supporting them all these years so they could have so much in their lives and continue to play.
Then during the 1st encore EV dedicated Just Breathe to, I believe, his son.
Why point out the negative?
Plus it was a joke. Again you are a JACKASS for leaving and a bigger JACKASS for starting this thread.
Please go away.0 -

Now, now... there are lobbyists who work for good things like (insert something good here).
And there are lobbyists who work for Goldman Sachs. If you're a lobbyist for Goldman Sachs, please kill yourself. You'll save the life of others... instead of taxpayers bailing out Goldman Sachs.... yada yada...
I don't really mean "kill yourself", but please change, and work for good.

Sounds like he was just paraphrasing Bil Hicks. Who gives a fuck?0
