Walked out of the DC show

So should Eddie take on the Bill O'riley/Fox News point of view? While I agree that suggesting people kill themselves is a bit extreme, it is the fact that people refuse to speak up and voice their displeasure with the way our political system conducts itself that enables the greasing of wheels to dictate or country's legislation. Lobbyists do nothing for us, the people. Instead they enable the agenda of the rich and corporate elite while the middle class suffers. If only more people would become outspoken, people would become more aware of the bullshit and try to enact some sort of change. It starts with awareness and I think to some degree Eddie was trying to envoke some sort of emotional awareness. I don't know......Either way, its nothng to leave a show over.
This reminds me of when people got mad over the Bush mask and began to Boo. Put the Kool-Aid down people......Post edited by Little Italy on"he who forgets-will be destined to remember"0 -

Everyone agrees with me! They just don't want to admit it.
Actually, I'm sure lots of people disagree with you. I definitely disagree. Also, Ed seems to be knowledgeable when he speaks on political issues. Whether you agree or disagree with his statements is another story.Post edited by Abe Froman on0 -

I disagree.
You also have to consider that some music has always been political. Of course there are the pop stars who never want to ruffle any feathers, but music especially rock music has always had artists that inject politics into their songs and their performances.
That being said, you also have the right to not agree or not want to hear it.
On the other hand everyone says stupid stuff, especially if they've had a few. I myself am very guilty of that.
Eddie and the band's political leanings are no secret so if you go to a show you know that you might hear some lefty rantings...2003: Madison Square Garden 1

I disagree with this 100x over!!!!!! Part of the fun of the show is seeing the "fun"/"real" side of the band. It's not like they spend 1/2 the show talking, there are a lot of moments in between the songs that are freaking priceless!!!Post edited by Long Road_WI onUnited Center - Aug 23, 2009 / Austin City Limits - Oct 04, 2009 / Sprint Center - May 03, 2010

huh i had front row pretty dead center looking right at eddie..Eddie was smiling when he said it and everybody else in the band were laughing at the comment when he said it. Now i know life is fragile thing.i also know death is something people are weird about joking about. It is however a show and D.C.(well right outside) any fan of pearl jam would have to know the Republican hate speech stuff was coming last night and also any fan of pearl jam would know i would think how tongue and cheek Eddie can be sometimes.all this said you have a right to walk out and thats fine. That's you0

I do not agree with much of the politics of PJ. Even many of the songs. I know this going in so I doubt I would ever leave. Only times I leave PJ shows early is when I get kicked out.
kudos to OP for leaving though. If you had a bad taste, fuck it.0 -
I agree with Eddie and the politics of the matter, but telling people to go kill themselves to me was just too far. He didn't even say it with a hint of sarcasm. It was only at the end of the rant that he realized his mistake0

and then he "fixed" it......what more can you ask. And the post a few above you says it was obviously not said seriously. It does sound shocking to read that he said that but people all the time say stuff they realize they should not have----I know I do. At least it is not on a stage! So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream

I am not left or right. I go to a concert to hear the tunes and nothing more. Sing the freaking songs, tickets are a $100 a piece, sing!!
I don't care what the band's political views are.
With that said I will keep buying their music and will keep going to their shows but sometimes I really get tired of Eddie talking, he just sounds silly most of the time. I swear in Cleveland 2006 he went on about a dream he had about the moon exploding! Sing don't talk!!0 -
Guess what? We are talking about it, and I'm pretty sure that is what Eddie wants.Straight down the center for a hot chicken dinner!0

i know that i and all the other pj fans i know love when ed talks, rambles, cracks jokes, etc. it's not JUST about the music, it's about the connection with the fans. when ed talks it's always like it's just one on one, whether you agree or not.2006: Hartford

It totally sucked the life right out of the show for me. I understand that Eddie had the right to speak his mind, but I thought that comment was so crass and ignorant and it really upset me. When they started "The Fixer" I couldn't even move I was so stunned and upset and I looked at my brother and we both said "let's leave". And there were quite a few people leaving when we were (just before the first encore).
I certainly don't look to the band to be my moral compass, but to marginalize someone's life and suicide I think is irresponsible. After 13 years in the fan clubs and almost 20 shows I can't say I am excited about seeing them again.
I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

I think a lot of fans love when he talks. I for one am usually very intrigued by what he has to say. Again, whether I agree with him or not. I don't think he sounds "silly" at all. I enjoy his banter with the crowd and very much enjoy his sense of humor.0 -
I don't remember when/where he said it, but here is a quote from Eddie--"Educate yourself. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. "
Key part " educate yourself". He brings topics up, and says certain things in
certain cities, because he wants people there to be aware, and think about the issue he's bringing up. Agree or disagree,
at least you're "standing for something".
Should he say, jokingly or not, for a group of people to kill themselves? Of course not. He realized this by the time he was done speaking and made it clear that he wasn't serious.0 -
I love it when Ed says what he is thinking. Probably a good thing that I do not have a stage in front of a sea of people...They would probably be throwing shit at me. He meant that shit about the lobbyists..and it was funny..imagine what would come out of that mans mouth if he didn' t feel like he had to censor himself..I would love to see that.
If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this0 -
