Walked out of the DC show

I was wondering if anyone else at the DC show was upset with EV comments that lobbyist for financial institutions should "kill themselves"? I thought it was an awful thing to say. It totally sucked the life right out of the show for me. I understand that Eddie had the right to speak his mind, but I thought that comment was so crass and ignorant and it really upset me. When they started "The Fixer" I couldn't even move I was so stunned and upset and I looked at my brother and we both said "let's leave". And there were quite a few people leaving when we were (just before the first encore).

I certainly don't look to the band to be my moral compass, but to marginalize someone's life and suicide I think is irresponsible. After 13 years in the fan clubs and almost 20 shows I can't say I am excited about seeing them again.

I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

very surprised he would say that, but I don't think he meant it literally?

Ed is known for saying things like this, though suggesting people kill themselves was a bit far. He did take it back, and suggest that instead of killing themselves that they change, or do something for good, etc.

You can write a letter to EV c/o Ten Club, if you are so inclined.

i don't want to sound like a dickhead, because certain things are more meaningful for certain people judging by their beliefs and situations, but honestly i can't believe you let it get to you that much. if all my buddies and i took what we said to each other personally, forget it, it'd be a bloodbath. ed was being dramatic, and i heard he apologized afterwards. i mean, i wasn't there, and like i said, nothing against you. i actually give you credit for having a firm stance. BUT ITS FUCKIN PJ! we all know eddie! i'd say let it roll over and have a good time! that's just me though.

I guess I left before I heard him take his comment back, but good to know he did. And I hope he didn't mean it literally (I don't think he did) but it was still shocking that he was so flip about it.

i think that anyone who values money over the health and well-being of anyone in the world, over children and adults starving everyday, should kill themselves.

    I CANT BELEIVE YOU LEFT!

People get to upset too easily these days.

Politically Correct is killing the US.

I LOVE the fact Eddie speaks his mind during concerts and even disagree with most of it.. (republicanish here)

On the other hand, most politicians do deserve torture and imprisonment..

I don't care who you are, or what you do for a living - if you haven't directly taken one's life, you are deserving of life yourself. You earn that right the day you are born, and in my opinion, unless you kill another, that right stays with you.

His comment went something like this (and I'm paraphrasing):

Is there anyone here who's a lobbyist? (a couple of hands go up - crowd boos in general)
Now, now... there are lobbyists who work for good things like (insert something good here).
And there are lobbyists who work for Goldman Sachs. If you're a lobbyist for Goldman Sachs, please kill yourself. You'll save the life of others... instead of taxpayers bailing out Goldman Sachs.... yada yada...

I don't really mean "kill yourself", but please change, and work for good.

    (again, I'm paraphrasing)

i commented on this in the fanviews a little further, but anyway... i had some guys that were standing next to me that left as well. i think you are being ultra-sensitive. nothing personal, but to let a standard eddie comment ruin your experience is silly. just ignore it and wait for the next song.

So should Eddie take on the Bill O'riley/Fox News point of view? While I agree that suggesting people kill themselves is a bit extreme, it is the fact that people refuse to speak up and voice their displeasure with the way our political system conducts itself that enables the greasing of wheels to dictate or country's legislation. Lobbyists do nothing for us, the people. Instead they enable the agenda of the rich and corporate elite while the middle class suffers. If only more people would become outspoken, people would become more aware of the bullshit and try to enact some sort of change. It starts with awareness and I think to some degree Eddie was trying to envoke some sort of emotional awareness. I don't know......Either way, its nothng to leave a show over.

This reminds me of when people got mad over the Bush mask and began to Boo. Put the Kool-Aid down people......

    I disagree.

You also have to consider that some music has always been political. Of course there are the pop stars who never want to ruffle any feathers, but music especially rock music has always had artists that inject politics into their songs and their performances.

That being said, you also have the right to not agree or not want to hear it.

On the other hand everyone says stupid stuff, especially if they've had a few. I myself am very guilty of that.

Eddie and the band's political leanings are no secret so if you go to a show you know that you might hear some lefty rantings...

huh i had front row pretty dead center looking right at eddie..Eddie was smiling when he said it and everybody else in the band were laughing at the comment when he said it. Now i know life is fragile thing.i also know death is something people are weird about joking about. It is however a show and D.C.(well right outside) any fan of pearl jam would have to know the Republican hate speech stuff was coming last night and also any fan of pearl jam would know i would think how tongue and cheek Eddie can be sometimes.all this said you have a right to walk out and thats fine. That's you

I do not agree with much of the politics of PJ. Even many of the songs. I know this going in so I doubt I would ever leave. Only times I leave PJ shows early is when I get kicked out. 8-)

kudos to OP for leaving though. If you had a bad taste, fuck it.

I agree with Eddie and the politics of the matter, but telling people to go kill themselves to me was just too far. He didn't even say it with a hint of sarcasm. It was only at the end of the rant that he realized his mistake
