I don't remember when/where he said it, but here is a quote from Eddie--"Educate yourself. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. "
Key part " educate yourself". He brings topics up, and says certain things in
certain cities, because he wants people there to be aware, and think about the issue he's bringing up. Agree or disagree,
at least you're "standing for something".
Should he say, jokingly or not, for a group of people to kill themselves? Of course not. He realized this by the time he was done speaking and made it clear that he wasn't serious.

    AGREED!! :!:

I was running the thread over at RM and what was relayed to me was... Ed ranting on lobbyists pressuring politicians to vote against financial reform...he says do everyone a favor and kill yourself ...you'll save lives if you kill yourself...well don't die just come to your senses... then went into The Fixer.

The one thing that I have always loved about Ed was his way with words... ! He says what he thinks and stumbles with his words BUT he is always passionate and true to his inner belief regardless of the backlash ...such as this. Now I don't agree with Ed telling anyone to kill themselves with the many suicidal people in the world...it demeans their plight...but I do applaud his courageous earnest attempt at getting his point across. I think his heart was in the right place...he works hard for the greater good...

Now this is just my 2 cents...not worth much...but here anyway... :D

I agree with Eddie and the politics of the matter, but telling people to go kill themselves to me was just too far. He didn't even say it with a hint of sarcasm. It was only at the end of the rant that he realized his mistake

and then he "fixed" it......what more can you ask. And the post a few above you says it was obviously not said seriously. It does sound shocking to read that he said that but people all the time say stuff they realize they should not have----I know I do. At least it is not on a stage!

It was said seriously....wait until you hear the boots. He even paused after people kind of laughed and said something to the effect: "No, I'm serious".

If he wants to make his point, it needs to be done in a more reasonable way

    that made me giggle.

Maybe the OP had a suicide in her personal life.
the people who walked out were probably the lobbyists.
'I could KILL YOU!' ...how many times has one said that?
How many times did I say, 'Why doesn't GWB just die?'
'Why doesn't Cheney just shoot George in the face?'
'Oh FFS, Glenda Beck, just kill yourself!'

Die Lobbyists Die! .. it's called exaggeration to make a point.

I love Ed's rants. His FUCK speech in OKC 2003, I will never forget.

5 examples of what it is like to not be cattle and to not try to blend in..to be fearless, this is the shit that has changed my life. It hits you like a ton of bricks, it humbles you and it sticks around in your head for a while...Ed should be proud that he impacted people enough for them to walk out. You do not need to agree with what is said in order to celebrate freedom of speech.

And your death will come soon
    I will follow your casket
    In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
    Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
til I'm sure that you're dead"

    3. Tool
"One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

    4. Country Joe
"Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late

I think going to a Pearl Jam show, you have to expect some Ed banter. And given the nature of some of their music is political, then the banter gets political at times, and it has before at DC shows. You may disagree with Ed's beliefs, but you have to know what you are getting into when you go to a show. That being said, in this instance I think it is very obvious that Ed went a little over board, and probably phrased his words more harshly than he would have liked. Obviously, leaving the show was the OPs choice, but I think its pretty obvious that Ed isnt on stage trying to get lobbyists to kill themselves. So leaving probably was an overreaction, even if Ed's comments this time were probably out of line.

It's classic Bill Hicks. Get a sense of humor people. I was sad that Ed took the comment back.

I suppose those who walked must have been those deeply affected. (That is, slime deep in greed SO MUCH that a wake-up call like the one that Ed delivered resulted in a further embrace of that which is wrong and NOT in the hopeful contemplation that Ed intended.) (But what do you expect from people who trade their souls for salaries anyway?)

I suppose by now you know what the resounding answer is.

I am glad that people walked out..it was the right thing for them to do. Because they obviously did not belong there.
