After all the hub-bub I've heard about this band, I reserved TN Fire and Z from the library and just listened to TN Fire.
I will partially blame a big lunch and a boring job...but the best thing about this CD is that if I ever have insomnia, it will put me right out. I literally almost fell asleep sitting up.
Not convinced about MMJ yet...hoping for a bit more uptempo numbers in the future...will report back after Z.

Do not start with the early albums. I did and almost quit on them. Now they are a top 3 band for me... Start with Z and Okonokos.

Please do not give up on this band. 5 years ago I may have agreed with you, but The Tennessee Fire has become one of my favorites from them. There are some really beautiful songs on that album. Z is way more upbeat which may be more up your alley. And if a live show doesnt convert you to a believer, than you can give up on them. I'd recommend checking out At Dawn and It Still Moves next, if not Okonokos which is a live album.

Okonokos for sure. I felt the same way about them when I tried getting into them via studio albums... Even Z, being one of the more accessible albums of theirs, imo, just doesnt relay the vibe that they are an awesome band, until you hear/see the songs live. Seriously, you will appreciate all of those songs more after you have listened to Okonokos. See if your library has the DVD. If not, you can find youtube videos. And seriously, Tenn Fire sounds like garbage... great songs on there, but it needs a remaster. After Okonokos, start at Z and move back from there. At Dawn is a great album, but does have a lot of slower stuff on it, so you may find that one a snoozer too if your not into the more mellow stuff. At Dawn has some beautiful songs on it tho. I wasn't able to fully appreciate the slower songs until after I had gotten into the band.

I loved MMJ for years before enjoying TF so don't give up hope just yet.
Just finished Z. I guess it's a little better than TN Fire, but it still doesn't sound like my type of music. BUT...since you guys are all adamant that it will grow on me, I will try to find their other albums and keep their spot on my ipod reserved...at least for a little while.
On to other 'new' music I picked up at the good old library...
I loved the Satellite Party album by Perry Farrell.
I HATED the latest Scott Weiland album.
The jury is still out on The Roots, but after one album, they sound like they have potential.
It's always fun to hunt for 'new' favorites.
Happy Friday all!

one of those few bands who has gotten better with age. but the early ones are cool too....just not as experimental and shit. i love this band.

Twice opening for PJ... 6 times on their own... although the Philly show at the eFactory doesn't really count since my friend was not having fun and I left early rather than deal with the grumbling...

I've only seen them 4 times. Besides PJ and Phish, this is the only band I will travel for from now on. After seeing them last year a few times I was 100% on board and I honestly believe they are one of the top 5 live bands you could pay money to see right now.
2 opening for PJ (although didn't see the whole sets)
1 at Lollapalooza in 07
4 times on their own.
I need to make this number bigger. I wish I had the cream to go to Mexico. It's going to be amazing.
And I agree, 63. They are at, or at least near, PJ's level when it comes to live shows. I will absolutely travel to see them. They do a great job switching up their sets (although the Circuital tour got a wee bit stale), but they can really bring it live.
Yup. I said that if they can build off of the Spontaneous Curation tour and keep playing like that with the varied sets, it would catapult them to the top of the top. So far they have done a great job of switching sets and I think that by them breaking out the old stuff they realize how much more support they are getting and having more fun.

just three for me, but all headlining shows at 3 different venues. St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, & Hard Rock Live Orlando. I need a fix!!!
Only seem them once. At Summerfest 2006 in Milwaukee. Need to see them again badly. I live in Arizona and I think they were part of the Arizona boycot because of that whole SB1070 thing. Hopefully artists come to their senses and realize that they are only punishing their fans. Not sure if that boycot thing is over or not...

I saw them 3 times on that tour and they shot up to my second favorite live band ever because of the varied, intense sets. Radiohead used to hold that two spot.

This is a universal truth for a lot of music, but weed certainly helps make music better.
And for My Morning Jacket, it makes their music AMAZING.
