Okonokos....no doubt start with that. After I saw them live I started from their first album and worked all the way through and I was really disappointed in the old stuff the first few listens. It's just completely different than what I was expecting. I came around to it after seeing them kill the older songs live but just to prevent a turn off, I would start with Z or anything after that just to be safe.
Or just skip all the nonsense and listen to all live stuff.
I've seen these guys not bad!
If I were to get 1 album which would it be?
Were do I start?
Thanks
I became a huge MMJ fan after Evil Urges came out so I would recommend listening to that and Circuital is amazing as well. I like their older stuff too but think they have been getting better with each album. Check out Jim James solo stuff too, it's great

I couldn't disagree more with this post. I think EU and Circuital are their 2 worst albums. The songs are still good live though because MMJ is a great live band.
At Dawn and It Still Moves are my favorites though I also love The Tennessee Fire and Z.
The split with Songs:Ohia is also amazing and of course Okonokos.
Chocolate & Ice is essential as it has the mindblowing Cobra.

I must be the only person that doesn't really care for Dodante. Last night they did a rolling stones cover "waiting on a friend" with the guys from Dawes. Mmj put on q great short set
I saw a 25 minute version in New York last year, which I think is the longest version ever. I still cant believe that happened
Ahh night 2....I was at night 3 and heard people talking about it. My first show at Charlottesville in 2011 I got an 18 minute version. There's just something so epic about that song when you hear it live.
I think my favorite song I've heard from them was a 15 or 16 minute Steam Engine from Philly last year. Absolutely killed it. 6 months and counting 'till Mexico
Oh and yeah Phosphorescent played Oh! Sweet Nuthin' with them. Waiting On A Friend was pretty cool, although I prefer the PJ version from a few years back just because as much as I love Yim, Eddie beasts it.
This hour of MMJ just leaves me craving more. Same with Wilco as they were solid, too.

That's awesome...When I seen them a few years ago, it was around 19 minutes. Just an epic performance and the most jammy thing I've ever heard from them. They turned that fucker inside out.

Yea, night 2. That Capital Theatre run was insane.

Phosphorescent's Muchacho may be my favorite album of '13 so far

You were there too!? I forgot! How bad did that rain suck! I don't know if I could have stuck it out if I was on the lawn. Luckily though, I was in the pit, and it was amazing. MMJ was my fav of the night, but I loveddddd getting to hear Wilco do California Stars. Even Dylan had some highlights.

Yea I was right in the middle of the 200 section. I didn't get pit because after Chicago last week and Dr. Dog the night before...the pit was the last place I needed to be on a Sunday night. Some of us have to be in early to work year round! :fp:
And this year has been an insane concert run. You still need to get down on the Mexico trip!!
The rain on Sunday was crazy. Hit victors pub before the show. Left after Wilco's set and I'm glad I did. Once I waded through the 2 feet of water on my way back over to the bar I noticed that my car was about to be engulfed by the rising water. Moved it to higher ground just in time...then had to wait things out as the water level fell enough so that I could get outta there. I had great seats on Sunday. 2nd row on JJ's side...they killed it.
I was at PJ Wrigley as well. Haven't had much luck with rain lately.
Does anyone else thing that MMJ should be a band that puts out bootlegs? I mean, they're such a phenomenal live band so it would make so much sense!
For sure! But are you aware over the past year they have put out 6 offical boots?
The 2 Red Rocks shows from Aug. '12, 3 Port Chester shows and Boston NYE show.

Right, but I mean that they should be more proactive with it. I'm aware that its hard for a band to put out bootlegs for every single show. And that is why I feel very blessed that PJ does that. But you would think that MMJ would have a strong enough following to the point that they could set something like that up.
And since they released those 6 shows, they really haven't had a proper headlining tour (IMO Americanarama doesn't count), so maybe once they tour and do series of 2+ hour shows, they will release those, as they have already have a system set up with this site... http://www.livedownloads.com/

I'm new to this post but not new to MMJ by any means. Great band for on record & live. Only seen them once. Summerfest 2006 in Milwaukee...same weekend I saw PJ open for Petty two nights in a row. Also saw moe. that weekend. Would really like to get a copy of MMJ's set from that night. Definitely before they got popular among the jam crowd. There weren't very many people there at all. That didn't deter them from killing everything they played. I don't even remember the setlist at this point but would love to hear it again. Didn't know they were hiding on the Interwebs somewhere. Will have to look for that.

I'd start with It Still Moves and Z. Good round up what they have to offer.
Okonokos(live album) is another option, but after you hear the live stuff some of their studio work might seem a little subdued.
Great thank you!
I saw them at the Pemberton festival a few years ago.

Dondante is an epic live tune. I read that Taylor and Griffin from Dawes came out to play with them, that's awesome.... what song was it?
