Leno and NBC Strike 1 Hour 'Tonight' Deal

Posted Jan 14th 2010 3:43PM by TMZ Staff

Jay Leno has made a new deal with NBC, which gives him "The Tonight Show" from 11:35 - 12:35 ... sources tell TMZ.

As we first reported, under the contract Jay had been working under, he was guaranteed the 10 PM hour. By moving him to 11:35, NBC was in breach of his contract and needed to negotiate a new deal. That is now done, sources tell TMZ.

So Conan O'Brien is out, and Jay is restored.

NBC Denies Jay Leno Tonight Show Deal
Thursday, January 14, 2010 1:39PM By Krystal Clark

nbc denies tonight show 14 1 10 kc NBC Denies Jay Leno Tonight Show Deal

Literally seconds, we mean SECONDS after it was announced by TMZ that Jay Leno would return to “The Tonight Show“ on NBC, the network issued a statement denying all claims. The suits over at the peacock network don’t want any drama, so their trying to keep everything under wraps. They refuse to give a real yes or no on the deal, just a general no comment.

We all know that evasion is another way of lying. They might not outright say it but this Leno story might be true. Conan O’ Brien’s not budging on his statement, and Leno has barely said a word about his plans for the future. Who do we believe?

of course they did...i would have expected nothing less from them...however, although i hate tmz with the heat of a nova, there are usually pretty right about this stuff
  • I hope wherever Conan goes...he goes on at 12:30. That's the Cone-Zone. Always has been. Always will be. I don't care what NBC does at 11:30 because I like Letterman.

This has made for some pretty funny stuff. I haven't read this entire thread so it may have been posted, but here's a funny bit Letterman did about the Leno/Conan stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msC3uu4KZbg

NBC Finally Names 'Tonight Show' Replacement: Lane Kiffin
    by LM Glendower Member

In a stunning move, NBC management named Tennessee Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin to the coveted spot as Tonight Show host. Kiffin has already left Tennessee for the studios in southern California.

NBC honcho Jeff Zucker discussed the many reasons why Kiffin was hired, namely: his comedy.

“The man’s hilarious. I’ve seen his hysterical Internet videos, like the one where he makes a recruiting violation on-camera. And I loved that one-liner about South Carolina, when he said that their players pump gas for the rest of their lives. Most lazy comedians trot out the cliche, 'If you go to that school, you'll be working at McDonalds.' Only a brilliant mind like Kiffin's could create such a genius twist on that witticism."

Zucker admitted that he initially held doubts.

"At first, I was very confused when Kiffin kept randomly accusing people of cheating. I said to my creative team, ‘I don’t really get this guy’s brand of humor. I’m missing the big picture.' And then, two months later? He gets slammed with violations himself! And I went, ‘Oh, so THAT’S it! What a brilliant gag!’”

NBC officials strongly hinted that Kiffin would bring his comedy team from Tennessee.

“That time where his players robbed a gas station with a pellet gun, well, that was just classic,” commented Zucker. “It reminded me of a Three Stooges slapstick routine, and we need that kind of 'back to basics' comedy here at NBC. With mental giants like that, we’ll surely move up from the #4 rankings."

It is not clear who will replace Kiffin at Tennessee. It is rumored that Defensive Coordinator Conan O’Brien was promised the job years ago, but that long-retired Offensive Coordinator Jay Leno has been aggressively pushing him out.

Leno had better rating than Conan did.
But that was prior to a shitty version of "The Tonight Show" being on before the actual Tonight Show.

I saw this last night. I don't know if it was an awkward as they say. Leno seemed to take the hits in stride, but it was pretty damn funny...

Jimmy Kimmel Slams Leno -- on Leno's Show
    Friday – January 15, 2010 – 10:01am

Things got awkward on Thursday's Jay Leno Show when Leno welcomed Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel participated in Leno's "10 @ 10" segment, which involves a celeb answering 10 questions via satellite.

Leno asked Kimmel to relate his best prank ever.

Kimmel said that he told a guy five years ago that he'd give him his show, and "then I took it back." (In 2004, Leno agreed to surrender The Tonight Show to O'Brien in 2009, after 17 years as host. NBC is now deciding whether Leno will resume his 11:30 p.m. slot; O'Brien recently said he would not accept NBC’s request to move his show to 12:05 a.m.)

At that point, Leno asked Kimmel. "Ever order anything off the TV?"

"You mean the way NBC ordered your show off the TV?" Kimmel replied. During a discussion on strippers, Kimmel said, "I don't like strippers because you have a phony relationship with them for money. Sort of like the way you and Conan were on The Tonight Show together passing the torch? You know what I'm saying."

He also told Leno: "Listen, Jay, Conan and I have children, all you have to take care of is cars. I mean, who have lives to lead here. You've got $800 million, for God's sakes... leave our shows alone." (Kimmel made fun of Leno on Tuesday's Jimmy Kimmel Live. Wearing an exaggerated fake chin to play Leno, he joked that he was taking over all late-night shows, including Kimmel's, and announced that ABC stands for "Always Bump Conan.")

Meanwhile, Leno and O'Brien are continuing to rip each other.

"Hi, I'm Conan O'Brien, NBC's 'Employee of the Month,'" he said in his monologue Thursday. "There's a rumor that NBC is so upset with me, they want to keep me off the air for 3 years. My response to that is, if NBC doesn't want people to see me, just leave me on NBC."

Leno fired off jokes on his show as well: "In other TV news, Sarah Palin has signed with Fox News to be a correspondent. Fox says, if she does a good job, they'll sign her to a long-term contract. And if it doesn't work out, they'll just blame Leno.

"With all the controversy going on here at NBC, actually," he continued, The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien's ratings have gone up. "So, you're welcome!"

That last comment "So you're welcome!" drew applause and laughter from Leno's audience, but I didn't find it funny at all. I don't think I laughed once during the whole show, except for Kimmel's jokes. I watched it mainly out of curiosity. The only thing I've ever really liked about Leno's show was his Headlines segment, and his viewers really did all the work for that. Actually, that's not true... he has been funny at times, but he's had too many bad and tasteless jokes... it's time to fade away, Jay.

Conan and Andy were off the scale funny last night. I think Conan's Tonight Show is great... Leno will never be forgiven if he lets that die. If NBC doesn't want to pay Leno $80 million to terminate his contract, then he should be the better man and take whatever NBC is willing to give him, and then he can still have a career in television somehow, I'm sure.
  • Conan O’Brien’s Barbs Keep Coming
    By BILL CARTER

Conan O’Brien kept up the patter of jokes related to his late night contretemps Thursday night:

“Hi, I’m Conan O’Brien, NBC’s “Employee of the Month.’”

“There’s a rumor that NBC is so upset with me, they want to keep me off the air for three years. My response to that is, if NBC doesn’t want people to see me, just leave me on NBC.”

“Time sure does fly. Do you realize that a baby born on the day we did our first “Tonight Show” is now a slightly larger baby?”

“This is absolutely true—I received a letter from the adult film company ‘Pink Visual’ offering me a role in one of their porno movies. In the movie I’d be having sex with a beautiful woman and just as we’re about to climax I get replaced by Jay Leno.”

“No matter what happens, it’s been a real honor to sit in the same chair as Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and Jay Leno.”

This was outstanding. Fuck Leno. He is quite possibly one of the most unfunny "comedians" alive.
  • I have heard from some insiders (my whole family works there) that people around NBC Universal want Jeff Zucker (head of NBC) out of there! They do not want him to make another stupid ass decision, especially since it cost about $60 million to build Conan's set.

They should give Leno the finger like everyone else seems to be doing. Do they really think Leno's ratings will increase being back in that late night slot? They have to be kidding themselves.
  • I don't think most of you are understanding what happened. Leno was basically given an ultimatum by NBC a few years ago. He didn't offer the show to Conan and then just decide to take it back from him out of the blue. It's a little more complicated than that. On top of that, Conan's numbers weren't all that great. And it's not like he had to build a brand new audience. He's been on fucking tv for over 15 years.

Besides, he's just a silly motherfucker. Leno is more professional. Plus, he's a comic himself. He's more at home in California than Conan anyway. And Andy is just a douche. Nobody likes that fuck.

So quit your bitching and get used to Leno. He's not going anywhere for a while.

By the way, I like Conan. I've always watched him. He's just not "the guy". He's okay but he's a silly fuck.

“They’re just striking out at Jay,” he added. “It seems like professional jealousy.”

well, letterman made lots of changes when he went from 1230 to 1130--even the way he dressed. i don't think it made him less funny.
If nothing is everything, I'll have it all
  • Conan's show just seemed like it was built more for younger people that liked silly shit. It just never evolved into a grown man's type of comedy show. That's probably why it turned off so many viewers.

And the way you dress doesn't have anything to do with the content your spewing but it does affect perception...and Conan did still dress in some cheap ass looking suits and his show continued to look cheap too. He wears some awful looking ties as well.

At the end of the day, the only person left to blame is Conan. If he he had done what he was supposed to and attract an audience, none of this would be a problem.

eh no really...yes conan's audience skews younger but this is what jeff z(f)ucker wanted when he pushed jay to "retire" 5 years ago...he assumed leno's numbers would be declining about now...well they weren't so they tried to hold on to leno by doing that 10pm show...HUGE mistake...leno's brand of humor works well at 11:30 when people really aren't paying attention and just want to stare at the tv

i don't think conan should have adjusted his act for the earlier time slot...late night tv in it's current form is dying...ratings across the board are lower than they once were...in the long run, nbc should have stuck with conan, endured the hard times and fixed their primetime lineup...cbs is number 1 in primetime and dave is number 1 in late night...it's not much of a coincidence

    Exactly!

Also, how many years did Leno get a top rated, high grossing show prior to the local news? Oh, well, most of them. Many reports have shown that a large number of people typically stayed with what was on (Leno) if they were drawn to that pre-local news timeslot.

When the network can't put a quality show on prior, you don't stand much chance of maintaining certain numbers.
Leno got shows like ER, Law and Order, the list goes on and on.
What did Conan get? A horrible version of itself that failed miserably.

Letterman's numbers started to increase as CBS' numbers increased too. Did his show change? Not really.
History plays a big part in this and it seems like a lot of people forget about this. Having a guy take over the tonight show at the same time where the network is in last place and has nothing to offer...
I wonder why the ratings weren't that great?

To think I was one who said I didn't think Conan was as good because he seemed to change a bit for the Tonight Show. Seems like he didn't change enough for some people.
  • I don't know norm. I think Conan failed mainly because he's not very funny. Leno is no Dave Chapelle but he's got a little more comic brilliance than Conan. I just can't believe that NBC would think his brand of stupid ass humor plus he has no great bits to speak of to compete against Letterman.

On top of that, Letterman had the Palin debacle and the cheating scandal that helped boost his rating over the past several months.

It was just no competition. Conan doesn't offer anything significant, This is coming from a fucking comedic genius. Yes, that's right....me ;)

senor donkey, i am just giving the reasoning of the boneheads that did this...personally, i think conan should have stuck to writing...he just isn't that good of a performer/host imo and can't interview worth a damn...but he is funny evidenced by his work on the simpsons which alone puts him in the comedy hall of fame

hollywood is obsessed with youth...anything that attracts younger viewers and their discretionary income is all their after so z(f)ucker wasn't exactly wrong in his plans to replace leno...but he should have waited until the ratings started to drop before intitiating a succession...but he wanted to keep conan and his current fan base

conan was only given 7 months to attract viewers...for his first 2-3 seasons, leno was constantly losing to dave...then came the hugh grant interview and nbc's strong primetime ratings and viola...jay's #1
