  • The Massachusetts special election continues to amaze. Democratic candidate Martha Coakley has taken a swipe at Fenway Park fans:
Coakley bristles at the suggestion that, with so little time left, in an election with such high stakes, she is being too passive.

“As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?’’ she fires back, in an apparent reference to a Brown online video of him doing just that.

Well yes, politicians go out to meet the voters even if it means standing out in the cold. At least politicians who want to win in Massachusetts.

I love how things are spun in politics... how exactly has she "taken a swipe at Fenway Park fans"??? maybe taking a swipe at the Brown, or taking a swipe at the cold weather, but c'mon...

That being said, it was a dumb comment to make, but only a political hack could turn that as her taking a swipe at the public.

    Amazing, isnt it???

    How the Healthcare Reform Bill.....
    Could possibly come down....

    To one election....
    Involving 2 candidates....
That 99% of the nation, has never fucking heard of......

Strange little country we live in.......

If that's the case, then people have no one to blame but Democrats. You do know that it only takes 218 votes to win in the House (there are 256 Dems) and 51 votes in the Senate (there are 58 Dems). This election should actually be meaningless when it comes to getting their agenda passed. No one is standing in their way but themselves.
  • This is a no-lose election for the republicans... either Brown wins and it's their first big move against Obama, or he loses and they cry voter fraud/ACORN, and have something to rail on about for months.

I heard today on the news about how some precincts were passing out ballots with Scott Brown's name already checked. The Secretary of State's office is looking into it.

    How does that even matter?

If someone is that stupid and can't figure out that there is a problem they don't deserve to vote. I'm guessing this won't amount to a hill of beans.

I completely agree with you. I don't think it will amount to anything either as he has a commanding enough lead as of now. I just heard about it and thought it was worth mentioning. But if the roles were reversed and Coakley was in the lead and some ballots were checked for her, you would probably be crying foul, no?

I just don't understand how anyone could get confused on this. There are three (maybe more I'm in Illinois) circles to check. Check the one you want. But I agree none should be checked, but this is just me saying I would be extra sure my ballot was correct before casting my vote.

Exactly. Which is why this got out as a story. Someone probably got a checked ballot and brought it back and someone overheard and tweeted or texted the news channel. Doesn't look like it will affect anything as it looks as Brown has this election won.

in the grand scheme of things this election result is meaningless for 3 reasons...

    1. the dems hold the white house

    2. the dems have a very wide majority in the house

    and

    3. the dems have a 59-41 majority in the senate, all it takes is a vote of 51-49 to pass any legislation...so the only thing the gop won is the ability to filibuster and continue with their M.O. of being "the party of no"....

congrats to the gop on this one...

and to the people of Mass, i hope you get what you voted for....

This is also a wake up call for the Dems. Sort of like if a Dem won a senate seat in Texas.

Actually, the Dems need 60 votes to pass legislation. Now that Scott Brown is the 41st Republican, he literally holds the deciding vote on the healthcare vote. That is assuming the 2 Independants vote in the Dems favor and they don't use Paul Kirk's vote and push this thing through before they seat Scott Brown.

i'm sorry but you are wrong. 60 votes are needed for cloture, and it prevents a filibuster by the minority party and ends debate and allows the bill to move on for final vote. in the senate it takes a majority vote 51-49 to pass legislation. if there is a 50-50 vote the vice president (who is the president of the senate) is the tiebreaking vote. you are talking about needing 60 votes to move forward with healthcare because without 60 votes the gop will filibuster (as usual) and prevent the bill from coming up for a final vote. this is government 101, or civics class basics....

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking the non-filibuster way. Hey, it's been a long time since I was in social studies so these things get muddled. I admit when I am wrong though.

no worries, its hard to keep everything straight when all we hear about in the news is "the dems need 60 votes to do anything" it gets confusing...i think people focus on the 60 votes for the wrong reasons, if you don't get the 60, the debate continues indefinitely until you get the 60 votes to end debate.

I'd respectfully like to ask a question coming from a neutral outsider.

    What exactly did you win?

Most of you (on this forum) seem very well educated on these issues, and I'd like some insight.

Can someone breifly explain to me why such a great country wouldn't want healthcare reform? I see all of the protests against healthcare - and I guess I just don't get it.

When I lived in the US, my daughter had to go to the emergency room because of a simple accident and it cost me thousands out of pocket. Coming from Canada, that was a shock to the system.

Again - I am not trying to be disrespectful of your Country, I am just curious.

It's a blow to Obama's socialist agenda. It's a win for those of us who respect the constitution and want our country back!

There is nothing wrong with Healthcare reform. What we don't want is this socialized medicine, government run, Obama-Care garbage. The real problem in this country is culture, not healthcare. People have no forsight. They just want free stuff and they want it now. They don't care who and how it gets paid for. They don't care that it will discourage future doctors from going to med school and slowly lower the quality of care available.

Secondly, people don't want to be responsible for themselves. You don't NEED a flat screen TV, you want it. You NEED healthcare. People spend their money on want they want, then want someone to give them what the NEED. It's like showing up at a soup kitchen for a free meal, but having a cell phone.....

I gather some are believing they're winning back their country little by little, basically something, anything that gets them excited gives them the feeling of victory. More power to them.

I suppose this is the statement that confuses me most. I don't beleive I live in a socialist country, yet I never have to worry about "what if I get sick".

I know I pay a lot of taxes, but I have had three children and in that process spent 7 nights in a private room in a hospital and it cost me a total of $70 and that was for the cable TV.

How has Obama "dis-respected" the Constitution? Isn't he pushing a plan that he promised to push when he was elected?
