Earthquakes are natural occurrences that are necessary to the homeostasis of our planet. How about not focusing on the bad, or why or what? Dont overlook all the good that has come from this event. Awareness of hurting people, the reaching out of the world toward this country. Bad things happen in a fallen world. God uses the things that happen for his greater good.

Jesus was a very religious person and look what the world did to him. What did he do to deserve it?

I think not enough people question or ask why.
The ones who do are the ones who think outside of the box, and the ones who start to think for themselves and not what a book or other people tell them.

good point, actually. if he were here in human form he'd be imprisoned for neglect.

and i don't believe in anyone who has to "kill" hundreds of thousands of people in an earthquake to show there is good in the world.

its called a natural disaster because thats what it was, a disaster caused by nature.
    Blame Satan

God doesn't have conrol over what Satan does?

To believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ does not seem to matter.

That's funny because in it's simplest form... that is it.
All religious people need to say is, "I took the leap of faith... and this is what i believe." and the case is closed. You cannot argue belief. What everyone have been debating is truth and knowledge. If somone believes in the Bible... there is no arguement. The arguement points crop up when they mistake belief as knowledge and/or truth.
    Very good.

Why doesn’t that work both ways? Non-religious people don’t have a problem saying that what opposes the bible is truth or knowledge. For example; I should believe that we came from nothing by random chance for no apparent reason. That needs faith from my point of view as well. So would you agree that your arguments against the bible are just beliefs as well or is there some truth or knowledge in what you believe?

this is what we've been trying desperately to get through to you. WE KNOW THAT WE DON'T KNOW IT ALL. ALL WE CAN GO BY IS WHAT WE DO KNOW, OR WHAT WE CAN THEORIZE BASED ON FINDINGS OF KNOWLEDGE. YOU SAY YOU KNOW IT ALL BASED ON NOTHING. Why is that so hard to grasp? Is the grass being green a belief, or a truth to you? Do you know the difference between belief and theory?

two tectonic plates reacted after hundreds of years of tension along a faultline, causing a severe earthquake that an impoverished country wasn't prepared for.

My point exactly, you cant just stamp God on everything. Its ok to not know.
I'd rather leave it unexplained than to say God made it so.

The reason it doesn't work both ways?
Because I am saying, "I don't know". I am not proclaiming myself as the bearer of 'The Truth'.
    ...
And I don't care what you believe.... I don't care if you believe you know the truth. I know the truth... that you don't know, either.
    ...
As for the Bible... i have listed my many, many questions that have been either ignored, brushed over or brushed aside as silly childish questions. And i am going to the 'Known' column when I say, "I know there are no talking snakes... and there weren't talking snakes in the Middle East during the Neolithic period". People high on opiates that snakes talked to... yes. But, talking snakes? Nope.

this isn't meant for you directly haffajappa. I just don't plan on spending anymore time on this thread.
I see the atheists on this board love to mock and attack.

I'm a Christian. I think for myself and have questioned my religion. I have always believed in God but have followed different paths in the past. When I really started looking at other religions and Christianity I came to the conclusion that Believing in God and knowing that the only way to God is through Jesus. It is the only way.

Maybe athiests need to start thinking outside the box instead of believing everthing just appeared out of nowhere for no reason. Then some theory will come along stating how it all began and then it will be found that it was inaccurate then another theory will form.
Please just take the time to look into it instead of mocking it.
Like I said before. It's up to you to have faith. God gives everyone free will. No one is telling you that you have to believe.

What's the worse thing that can happen to me if I'm wrong. I would die and nothing.
But if you die and you come face to face with God, well then.....................

I have found The Beach to be a very wise uplifting person. A joy to read their posts.
I heard something today I also loved
"we spend our lifetime moving towards God".
Just thought I would share, because sharing is a kind way of communicating.

I'm not mocking you at all. Never have. What you call mocking and attacking is what we call defense of condescension and arrogance. And I'm pretty sure atheists (and agnostics, like me) are the ones thinking outside the box. That would entail going against the grain of "truth" that has beaten into our heads for the last thousand years by the religious masses. Science is what is thinking outside the box. Constantly looking for new ideas and theories of how the earth came to be and evolved over time. How is that stagnant thinking? Religion stays inside the box, and won't ever leave. A book was written 2000 years ago and will never change. And that's FINE, if that's what you need in your life.

But your last point is what strikes me the most: it states to me that you don't truly believe in God or anything else, you have accepted him as a "just in case". I don't plan to live my life in fear of anything. That makes me truly free and happy.

Yeah... Im not trying to mock. : )
Didn't everything come from nothing when God made the world according to the bible?
Old theories can be surpassed by new ones, and that's the great thing about science. But how many people can embrace new ideas when they are so focused on a book that was made up thousands of years ago? I'm surprised many people don't still insist the Earth is the centre of the universe...

Many of my friends are very religious, my best friend is a catholic. We get along because we all value each others opinion.
The main post in this thread is asking how is it so hard to believe, and i think most atheists in here are explaining why.
