The Cubs acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo and right-hander Zach Cates from the Padres on Friday, sending right-hander Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na to San Diego.
The 22-year-old Rizzo batted .331 with a 1.056 OPS, 34 doubles, 26 homers and 101 RBIs in 93 games for Triple-A Tucson last year. The slugging lefty hitter was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft by the Red Sox, when current Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein was general manager in Boston, then dealt to San Diego as part of the trade for Adrian Gonzalez.
Rated the top first-base prospect in the league by MLB.com, Rizzo struggled during his brief time in the Majors last season, batting .141 with one home run and nine RBIs in 49 games, but he has dominated Minor League pitching at every stage of his career, batting .296 with 119 doubles, 64 home runs and 281 RBIs in 375 career Minor League games over five seasons.
"The acquisition of Yonder Alonso provided us the flexibility to make this trade and acquire a quality, young power arm in Andrew Cashner," Padres GM Josh Byrnes said. "We are happy to add a pitcher with the pedigree of Cashner and an outfielder with the athleticism of Na."
Cates, 22, was the Padres' third-round Draft pick in 2010. He made his professional debut last year, posting a 4-10 record and 4.73 ERA in 118 innings over 25 starts for Class A Fort Wayne. He struck out nearly a batter an inning and allowed only four home runs on the year.
Cashner, 25, went 2-6 with a 4.29 ERA in 60 big league appearances with the Cubs, including one start, over the last two years. The 2008 first-round Draft pick made his big league debut in 2010 and went on to appear in 53 games that season, but he was limited to just seven outings in the Majors last season due to a right shoulder strain.
Na, 20, hit .268 with 10 doubles and 22 RBIs in 83 games between four different teams in the Cubs' Minor League system last year. The Seoul, South Korea, native was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2009.
Hoyer haas always been high on Rizzo. It does look like a great trade. If we can move Alf, i'm gonna love this offseason even more!! Good for theo, getting rid of the garbage that Hendry gave us!

Did I love him on Sept 14th, 2008 when I watched him pitch a no hitter in person?
HELL YES I DID!!!! Saw them win game 2 of the LCS at Wrigley in 03 and I still think the no hitter was the best game I've been to.
Did his act get old? Yes, so it was time to go. It's a business.

It will be a rebuilding year for at least the next 3 years, which is fine with me, probably the only realistic chance we have of getting better is once we get rid of all those overpaid veterans, ie Soriano.

Its a good year to bet against the cubs every game. In this bad economy its the only lock investment option. Im a cub fan and gambler and always see them favored -150+ especially at wrigley..they should not be favorites over any team. Curious if I can find out how much money you would be up if you bet $50 vs. the cubs every game for the past two years. My guess is you would have raked in the $$.

i'm going to wager....if you bet agaist the cubs every game, you would be a loser. they were only 20 games under.
if you assume they were dogs every game with a line of -175, you would win 28 on each win, and lose 50 on each loss.
28.57*91=2600
-50*71=-3550
2600-3550= -950
if you assume they are favored every game at -150, you would be up 3275
