    I don't know how things are where you live, but in the UK, legally, it's not the same. Partners still do not have the same rights as spouses. Only too often does one find out the hard way when, for example, there is a tragedy and one dies....

    In New Zealand once a couple (hetro or same sex) has been living together for 3 years they are legally classed as de facto and have the same rights as married couples, if they split up everything is halved (unless they have a contract like a prenup) if one dies then the estate and the bills go to the partner. The only way to change that is if it states something else in the persons will.

    Same goes for here in Aus...might even be a shorter period of time than 3 years though..I'm not sure....
