americans seems to be obsessed by being labelled 'cheap'? whats with that... obnoxious, loud, bolshy, rude, egotistical you all seem fine with.... but call an american 'cheap' and its worse than if you had just told them that you had sex with their mother AND father at the same time... and he loved it more...

    tipping is moronic...
i call it classless, since you are screwing over people that work very hard for your money.

but then again, who would expect a European to understand that with choice comes responsibility. no wonder they have to pay minimum wage there, the CHEAP (ie low-class) customer base won't pay a fair amount unless they are forced too. :)

we're a little more generous and giving :) we think "whats throwing a 5 spot on 20 if it will make the cute waitress smile a little." when you guys say "they should have launched a rebellion against the government if they want something for waiting on my fatass like a slave!"

Whether the money comes from tipping or from the boss paying more, it still shoots the cost up the same for the customer. Why are people saying it would shoot the cost up too high if the wait staff got paid correctly? Don't they get that to the customer, they are still paying the same?? Also, just why did tipping go from 10% to 20%. Its a PERCENT! It automatically adjusts when food goes up! I have no idea why it went up.

if they are paid the same, why would the prices be any different? the argument was if you pay the wait staff more, the restaurant will logically have to raise their prices to offset the higher cost of their staff.

ah sorry, ok i was really tired when i wrote whatever i wrote so i'm not even going to read what i wrote :)
i guess what i meant was, in BC (where the min wage is the lowest in the country! ) waitresses get the same minimum wage as anyone else... the wages here are higher but the food prices seem about the same (as the USA), its not like food is disastrously higher here because our waitresses make a higher min. wage.

but now that i think about it, it probably depends on the employer... and if they've been getting away with paying 4 dollars an hour and are made to raise it to 6 (or wahtever it is) then they probably will raise their prices.

I don't think many people will screw the person who's working 'very hard' for their money. I think the original article was cos nobody WAS working very hard. If they're not working, they don't deserve the money.

  • There is a restaurant in town that I have a trade account with; they get my organic chicken eggs, my family eats there. The other day, my husband took his mom & our two little girls to eat there. The bill was $40 (that came out of our trade account, so we didn't pay any money), and since my husband treated, his mom paid for the tip. Ok, so she tipped $6. My husband told her she should tip more, but she just said, "I'm not going to tip more than my actual meal!" She gets a free meal & still leaves only 15%! I'm embarrassed and feel like I need to go in to the restaurant specifically to give the waiter an extra $5. I mean seriously, doesn't this woman know that tips are what pay for her grandchildren to live?! sheesh!
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

so logically if the trend continues someone will only tip 20% and then look out america!

went to pf changs with the girlfriend last night. had 7:45 reservations. waited until close to 8:30 to be sat. i complained twice, she complained once. the manager came over and profusely apologized saying that they are new (this one just opened a couple weeks ago) and they are still working out some kinks. then he asked us if we'd like to go on a limo ride. so i said WHAAAAAACHU TALKIN' BOUT?!?!. no not really. but i did inquire as to what he meant. this limo thing was basically like a sampler. you tell them what you don't like, and they just start bring plates and plates of stuff they think we might like. people around us must have thought we were the biggest pigs in the world. ended up getting an appetizer sampler, ny strip (DELICIOUS), dan dan noodles, lemon chicken, saskatchewan asparagus, a few other things, and for desert, cheese cake and a piece of chocolate cake. not to mention multiple heinkens and mojitos. total bill was about $90 bucks....ON THE HOUSE  .........................we left a $27 tip.

...i also have lunch and dinner for today with the leftovers  god bless america.

That's a great story and win-win for everyone. You because you got the complimentary special meal to make up for the lateness, and the restaurant because you are now telling people how cool it was, and the waiter because you left a generous tip. Sounds like that restaurant has a good future.
