I would have just left before they realised I hadn't left the tip, simple. Get your shit together and put the money down at the last minute. Most restaurants add a gratuity for large groups. I have never heard of adding 18% automatically. I wonder if it was mentioned on the menu, or somewhere else in plain view.

If it's on the menu then it is theft. They new prior to ordering that there would be a required tip.
I spent 10+ years in the business and sometimes you're just to busy to give the service people want.

No... because I think I should stand on principles that are meaningful... such as social injustices. TIPS do not fall under that catagory in my book. A couple of bucks in not a big deal in my life. And there is no fucking way I am getting handcuffed, booked and causing court costs and lawyer's fees for 2 bucks per person. And we do not know all of the details of this specific case. If the restaurant/bar was under staffed, it is NOT the waitresses' fault. It is the fault of either the restaurant owner and/or the manager. And as I said, it doesn't kill me to get off my ass, walk to the bar and get a refill or a fork... I am not going to take it out on the poor waitress if the manager failed to schedule the proper amount of workers. I like waitresses... I date waitresses... I know the types of assholes they are forced to endure on a daily basis.
Now... I have been forced to leave a restaurant because of poor service in the past. We just ran out of time because the concert time was coming up. We didn't pay... but, we were never served and never ate. We did pay for our drinks and left a tip for the drinks because the poor waitress was getting her ass kicked... and they didn't have enough help in the kitchen. Manager's fault... not the help.
I work on compassion... if the bar was empty and there were 4 waitresses standing around, gossiping... that's a completely different story. But, it sounds like this was not the case. I'm not going to punish the minimum wage (plus tips) waitress because the restaurant owner and/or manager is too cheap to staff sufficiently.

Minimum wage in the United States is $7.25 per hour and waiters and waitresses are taxed on an I.R.S. scale that assumes they are tipped something along the lines of 8% or so. So, if you leave a 10% tip, they get taxed on 8% of that.
And the point i am making is that the service depends on so many other factors besides the waitress herself. Insufficient staffing because the owner or manager want to cut operating costs to increase profits... inept or insufficient workers in the kitchen. You may take it out on the waitress... I am not. That is all I'm saying.
I don't care what criteria you use to tip... or justify for not tipping. I leave something for the waitress just about every time... unless I actually see her pissing on my omlette. I don't have a level of expectations or demand that my wishes be fulfilled. As long as I get the meal I ordered and there is no spit or piss on it... i'm good.

The party was a total of 8... the couple that got arrested and 6 of their friends. The total of the bill was 73 bucks ($9.12 per person (avg.)) including the tip.
My guess is there is something else that is not being reported here. The police would not be arresting people for not paying the tip. My dangerously, unfounded speculation is that beligerence played a part in the arrests.
Either way... in my opinion, it is not like they are fighting for some sort of social injustice and not a justifiable reason for getting your ass arrested. The court costs alone will exceed the tip.

you know what i never think is fair? if someone dine and dashes the waitress has to pay... same with someone stealing gas. the latter was part of the reason they made a new law here, because someone was trying to steal gas and the attendant ran in front of the car to stop him, the kid ran over the attendant and dragged him a couple blocks. really sad. all for 20 bucks of gas.

That is terrible (but you have a nice boss). I never leave cash on a table and leave because I'm always worried that another patron might steal it off the table. I saw this happen once many years ago.

And YES... i leave a tip for hotel maids, car valets, taxi drivers, bell hops and sky caps... and YES... airport shuttle bus drivers.... I give them a tip, too. What is your stupid fucking point?
