At least seven people are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the base's public affairs office told NBC News on Thursday.
The official would not give his name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN, which said the person had opened fire on the SWAT team at the base.
KCEN reported that a policeman was among those shot.
KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post.
Greg Schannep, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Carter, told the Austin American-Statesman that he was on the Army post to attend a graduation service. He said that as he neared the entrance of a building where the service was being held, a soldier with blood on his uniform ran past him and said a man was shooting.
Schannep told the newspaper that the shootings appeared to have occurred in a complex near a theater where the service was scheduled. He was with the injured soldier, who he said appeared to have been struck in the shoulder but did not have life-threatening injuries.
According to unconfirmed reports, one of the shooters was being surrounded by police in the 42006 building on Fort Hood. That source told KCEN the shooter has a high-powered rifle.
The base was reportedly on lockdown. The Killeen Independent School District said all Fort Hood schools are on lockdown.
Temple ISD is on a "soft" lockdown. Parents will be able to pick their children up at the normal times, though they may experience delays.
FBI agents were reportedly on the way to the post.
Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, and 60 miles northeast of Austin. The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Lee M. Packnett said he was unaware if security measures were put in place at other military bases.
“At this point I do not know,” Packnett said.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the shootings, according to spokesman Robert Gibbs.
Fort Hood has seen other violence in recent years. In September 2008, a 21-year-old 1st Cavalry Division soldier shot his lieutenant to death and then killed himself. Spc. Jody Michael Wirawan of Eagle River, Alaska. shot himself to death after shooting 1st Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher, 24, of Jensen Beach, Fla. to death.

Suspect in Texas base massacre was Army psychiatrist
Reporting from Los Angeles and Washington - At least 12 people were killed and 31 wounded when a U.S. soldier opened fire at the Ft. Hood Army base in Texas, the Army said.
The suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was killed by police, Army officials said. Two other U.S. soldiers who may have been involved in the attack have been apprehended and are in custody.
Hasan was a mental health professional at the Darnell Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood, an FBI official said.
FBI officials in Washington and in San Antonio said that they had not determined whether Hasan acted alone or in concert with the other two soldiers arrested.
A U.S. official who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing confirmed that Hasan was recently promoted from captain to major and transferred from Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington to Ft. Hood.
The official expressed disbelief that an Army psychiatrist who regularly counsels soldiers on combat stress had committed the killings.
"It is simply amazing," the official said.
The official said that he did not know whether Hasan was going to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, and did not know his full service history.
President Obama, speaking on the shooting this afternoon, lamented the attack as a "horrific outburst of violence" and promised justice. "We are going to stay on this," he said.
"These are men and women who have made the selfless decision" to protect the nation, Obama said of the victims. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."
The first shooting began around 1:30 p.m. local time at a personnel and medical processing office, said Lt. Col. Nathan Banks, an Army spokesman.
The second incident took place at a theater on the base, Banks said. One official who would not give his name said that a graduation had been scheduled for 2 p.m. at the theater.
The base was locked down after the shootings, and people who live there were told to lock their doors and windows. Security at other military facilities around the nation has reportedly been heightened.
Army officials said they do not know whether the handguns used in the assault were military-issued service weapons or personal weapons.
The rules for carrying weapons on an Army post are standard throughout all bases, service officials said. The only personnel allowed to openly display weapons on the base are military police, Banks said. Service weapons are checked daily and are usually only allowed to be removed from an arms room for training on a range or maintenance. Personal weapons must be kept locked and registered with the base provost marshal. The military police keep a record of all of the weapons on a base, Army officials said.
Ft. Hood, which sprawls across 339 square miles of central Texas hill country, is the world's largest military installation. It supports two full armored divisions -- the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division -- and is home to more than 65,000 soldiers, civilian workers and family members. It is the largest single employer in Texas.
Base personnel have accounted for more suicides than any other Army post since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, with 75 tallied through July of this year. Nine of those suicides occurred in 2009, counting two in overseas war zones.
Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli, the Army's deputy chief of staff, has been leading an effort to reduce the number of Army suicides, which has climbed sharply this year, possibly as a result from long and repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Three of the four brigades of the 1st Calvary Division are in Iraq. The three brigades -- the first, second and third -- are on their third Iraq tour. The division's newest brigade, the fourth, has done two tours in Iraq, returning most recently in June.
Ft. Hood also is home to three of the brigades of the 4th Infantry Division. The fourth brigade is now in Afghanistan. The first brigade has done three tours in Iraq, returning most recently in March. The second brigade has also done three tours, returning most recently in September.
The military has not released the names of the dead.

So sad but true for those family members. His name may become an issue here but a bigger one is that he worked with soldiers returning from Iraq and other countries (PTSD). I hope he helped instead of hindered those returning soldiers which could be a more far reaching disaster.
I have a family member who is to be stationed there once he finishes boot camp, now 13 dead.
Peace

I wonder why he didn't just kill himself and leave others alone? I am sure that in his screwed up head there was some sort of reasoning to kill the others.
Its sad to hear this, especially since I do think it has something to do with us being at war, a war we shouldn't be in.
I have tried to donate blood during emergencies here in Michigan. What they told me was that they were flooded with donations at that time, but will need it a little bit down the road. since what they have will become depleted. So, for all of those in the area who are being told they don't need blood at this time, remember to give some at a later date.
So sad. Actually giving blood tomorrow, but up in PA.
it will be wrapped in the FLAG and
carrying a CROSS.
That's an idiotic remark. No, they aren't trained to be savage murderers you ignorant ass, they are trained to fight when called upon to fight. Most killings, even worse than this one, are perpetrated by people with little or no "training" when it comes to killing. This was just some psycho who lost it.
and where did i say theyre trained to be savage murderers??? and i have no doubt this shooter was someone who just 'lost it'. but i also know that a soldeir not willing to shoot to kill in war isnt much of a soldier at all. hence them being trained to kill... and not merely wound.

A military doctor who feared an impending war deployment is believed to be the gunman behind a shooting rampage Thursday afternoon at the Army's Fort Hood in Texas that killed 12 and wounded 31 before the gunman was shot multiple times.
Three soldiers were taken into custody as possible suspects, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone told reporters Thursday evening, though two were later released.
Cone identified the lone gunman as Major Malik Nadal Hasan, a psychiatrist who reportedly didn't believe in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and wanted out of the military before he was set to be deployed overseas.
Hasan was in stable condition at a local hospital Thursday night, Cone said after previously reporting that he was killed at the scene
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."
to quote a song.,
but that's the truth. this system drives us to terrible things.
we are all human. it could have been you. or me.
How does the system drive people to shoot groups of innocent people? To me this is an inhuman act.
Base commander Lt Gen Bob Cone said that one of the dead was a policeman and the others were soldiers. Thirty other people were injured in the attack.
President Barack Obama described it as "a horrific outburst of violence".
He said: "It is difficult enough when we lose these brave men and women abroad, but it is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on US soil."
The president extended his condolences to the families of the victims, adding: "We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident."
Lt Gen Cone said a graduation ceremony for a group of soldiers was taking place close to where the shooting began.
"Thanks to the quick reaction of several soldiers, they were able to close off the doors to that auditorium where there were some 600 people inside," he said.
"As horrible as this was, I think it could have been much worse."
"I was confused and just shocked," said Specialist Jerry Richard, 27, who works on the base.
"Overseas you are ready for it. But here you can't even defend yourself."
Another Fort Hood soldier told the BBC that the incident could put pressure on Muslim American soldiers.
"They've taken it hard, due to the fact that it kind of puts a negative light on them and makes people distrust them because everybody is going to look at them [and think]: 'Well, you're probably going to pull something like this'," the soldier said.
"And it's a sad fact that that will happen."
Texas Governor Rick Perry ordered all flags in the state to fly at half-mast as a tribute to the victims.
are we so desensitized to violence that we hear this tragic news and think "ho-hum, on with my life..."?
to me it is sad for these guys to have either just come back from deployment or were about to leave for deployment get gunned down at the one place they were supposed to be safe.
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."
We now live in a world of *Language of Violence* it's everywhere. Another shooting in Orlando Florida 2 apparently dead and 8 wounded in an office building......And the beat goes on. :(
Peace

i would say the gun plays some small part in the outcome of these events.
these poor poor souls. i hope they rest in peace.
will this madness ever stop?
