Buster Olney says the Yankees didn't bid. Motherfucker. They are serious about this payroll reduction, it seems. God damn it.

Edit: I lied. They did bid. MLBTR originally read his tweet wrong. Fingers crossed.

So looks like it comes down to the Yankees, Jays, Texas, Seattle, Nats and Cubs.

Seems that way. Texas is crying poor and I don't think they even made an offer to Wilson so who knows how involved they are of if they are just bullshitting. I know Daniels scouted himself a couple times.

I am really hoping the Yanks win. He would add a lot of depth to their young pitchers on a reasonable contract. The posting fee is nothing to the Yankees. Banuelos, Betances, Noesi, Nova and Darvish would be a very strong crop of young pitching to have.

Edit: Not terribly confident. There's a report that the Hippon Ham Fighters are very happy with the bid and there is a report the Yanks bid was "not huge" and that it was a last minute thing after a meeting today.

I wouldn't believe anything on Twitter until its actually announced especially when it comes to the Yanks. I agree we have a great crop of young pitchers and Hughes is only 1 year removed from 18 wins so hopefully he can bounce back.

I hear you, just makes me nervous after the fact since there is really no upper hand to be gained by BS'ing. Once things get out there though, it's a snowball, so who knows.

Just feel like Darvish would add a lot of flexibility to some of the prospects for a reasonable contract.

Word is yanks bid between 20-25 million which would be around what they bid for igawa. Very disappointed but pretty surprised at the rangers going that high considering several players are due big arb raises not to mention Hamilton will be a free agent after next season.

Agreed, sounds like they just put in a bid in case no one else did for the most part. Rangers have a good young staff, this is going to be a costly contract though.

Hopefully the Yanks turn their sights to Kuroda. There was also a report today that a couple teams are "kicking the tires" on AJ.
  • I dont love him but would take kuroda for a year. i rather see one of the kids win a spot out of spring training and than grab a starter at the deadline.

I like Kuroda a lot, his numbers will definitely jump in the AL East but he has been very consistent.

Oswalt will take a 1 year deal. I would be all over that.
  • I would love Roy for a year. I was at that game when Oswalt started the no hitter a few years ago. Brutal game left after 8.

Definitely, I would be all about him on a one year deal especially since he would be out to prove himself.
    $10-$12 guaranteed plus incentives...done.

ha, that sucks. That was rough. They used 5 pitchers, right?
  • It was 6 pitchers total. That game just sucked and I had no interest in seeing the stros celebrate which is why we left.
  • ESPN reporting Yanks signed Hideki Okijima to a minor league contract.

I'm setting the over under for games played by ARod at 90. I'm taking the under.

Just saw a report that ARod is off in Germany getting his knee treated. Something's not right. :problem:

Some specialist, Kobe Bryant recommended him, gona take a part from somewhere and stick it in his knee, help with the pain, hopefully it works, we need A-Man on his game this year.

At least they only owe him another 6/150. Ugh.
  • Hideki Okajima? What, Scranton needed a crappy japanese lefty to replace the outgoing Kei Igawa?

I hope ARod is healthy for the year as well...I just have a bad feeling. The knee, the hip...IDK.

what a disaster. I said at the time, and obviously still believe, once he opted out, they should have told him to hit the bricks. Nobody even makes hi an offer so Hank jumps at the chance to throw $300 million and a decade at him. I wouldn't be surprised if he maxes out at 100 games played the next 6 years. They need to move on, no longer build the lineup around him. take what you get from a broken down former roider as a bonus

  • Not a Arod fan but Yanks wouldn't have won in 2009 without him. That said they blew it resigning him to that deal bidding against themself they should've hard balled him.

No risk in Okijima, minor league contract and they need another lefty somehow. Don't expect much out of him though.

Yanks need Arod to be some form of Arod again. Whatever helps to get him healthy.

What is really pissing me off is that the Yankees are now apparantly a small market team and unwilling to upgrade on 1 YEAR FUCKING DEALS, because of budget issues. I understand the $189 million in 2014, I don't like it but I certainly understand where they are coming from. I do not like or understand the unwillingness to sign a good pitcher on a 1 year deal.
  • With luxury tax kuroda will cost 16-17mm I'd take him but not for that amt

With luxury tax, AJ is a $25 million or something pitcher and they had no problem with that. Why are we now hearing about luxury tax issues?

I am hoping for a bounce back year from Hughes, but relying on that plus Nova/Freddy having similar seasons is pretty iffy.

I could've sworn I read something back when Steinbrenner died that Hank or Hal - forget which one - had absolute no interest in owning the team and that the writer wouldn't be surprised if they sold the team in a few years or they had a penchant for wanting to reduce the payroll from where it's been - ie below the luxury tax/doing things completely different from his father.
  • the reason we're hearing about the tax now, and the reason they are trying to get underneath it, is because of the new CBA. If they stay over the cap every year, they will continue to pay 40-50% tax. but if they get under the cap for just 1 year, the next time they go over it, they will pay just 17.5% the first year, and it goes up a few % points every year

Yeah, there were rumors Hal didn't have much interest a long time back before he took over but that is pretty much put to bed now. It seems he's taken to it. Probably just the NY media trying to stir some shit up. They can't reduce payroll too much anymore with how much money they are making and the new stadium, just not possible. They certainly seem a bit more fiscially responsible and I understand getting under $189 mil for 2014 with the new CBA but I don't see anyway they are selling the team. Just not going to happen. Winning will always be a priority but I don't think they are just going to throw as much money at people like they did, which I don't necessarily have a problem with, just wish they would upgrade on a one year basis for next year.
