Anybody know how many sales Backspacer had in Week #4? What about its Billboard ranking?

I believe after 3 weeks it was sitting at #16 on Billboard with about 280,000 sold.

    As posted in another thread:

Fourth week sales were just over 20,000. Looks like this will place "Backspacer" at No. 23 on The Billboard 200. (Note: Hits Daily Double lists it at No. 25, but that includes two Michael Jackson catalog albums ahead of it that are not eligible for The Billboard 200.)

So, the chart run so far looks to be 1-10-16-23, which means "Backspacer" is holding up much better than "Riot Act," but not quite as well as "Pearl Jam," at least over the first month. "Pearl Jam" was 2-8-10-17-22 the first 5 weeks; "Riot Act" was 5-36-67-90-100.

I always thought these numbers came out on Wednesdays. Anyways, it would be nice if Backspacer could maintain on the charts for a little while. It would be nice if another promotional wave would come, including a new radio single, Letterman appearance, and possible SNL appearance.

My girlfriend told me they took down the big Backspacer cardboard display at Target. With Target being the only big retailer and no more big displays, I'm afraid sales may plummet.

It is really stupid that they wait so long for it.
On one side, they are happy about the new record deal since they get $5 for each CD.
On the other side, their promo sucks, and leads to fewes sales.
    I don't get it.

release a 2nd single soon, and make some TV appearances!

The second single has been released to radio. "Just Breathe" debuts at No. 42 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart this week. "The Fixer" is still hanging in at No. 7 after 13 weeks.

"Backspacer" ends up at No. 21 on The Billboard 200. Those Hits Daily Double numbers obviously do not synch up with Billboard. "Backspacer" has gone 1-10-16-21 on The Billboard 200. Look for stabilization and upward movement as "Just Breathe" continues to get more airplay. It's currently the fourth-most played track at KROQ Los Angeles.

as much as I love Just Breathe, I think Got Some or Unthought Known would have made better second singles for Backspacer. JB is too much like the Into the Wild soundtrack which the rest of the public has already heard a lot of, at least it got a lot of play here in LA.

I disagree, Heleka7. The only song from "Into The Wild" that got radio airplay was "Hard Sun," and it was by no means some kind of smash hit. It got no airplay at CHR/Top 40, and it didn't even reach the top 10 at alternative radio. "Guaranteed" got some exposure when it was nominated for a Golden Globe, but that was a one-shot deal.

I have no doubt that "Just Breathe" has the most crossover potential of any track on "Backspacer." The irony is that, if someone told me that he liked "Just Breathe," the album I would recommend that he buy would be "Into The Wild," not "Backspacer." "Just Breathe" is not at all representative of what "Backspacer" sounds like. It's kind of a bait and switch.

  • The second single is a double A side. Stations have the choice to play either Got Some or Just Breathe as the second single depending on which song they feel fits their format. Old news.
  • One thing I still don't get is the numbers for the first week. The album came out on Sunday. Meaning only Sunday and Monday were in the first tallies. Now is that include in the "week 1 sales of 180,000" or whatever it was? Or was week 1 the first Tuesday-Monday FOLLOWING the release of the album.

The thing everyone is forgetting, is the band only has to sell HALF as many albums as the last couple of albums because they now get TWO TO TWO AND HALF times as much money, per disc! :)

Something is off with the reporting. The reporting period actually runs from Monday through Sunday. If "Backspacer" had been credited with its September 20 (Sunday) sales for the September 14-20 reporting period, it would have debuted on the Billboard chart for the week ending October 3. However, it did not debut until the chart for the week ending October 10. It seems that the September 20 sales must have been combined with the sales for September 21-27.

  • My friend that is going with me to philly 2 picked up the album yesterday. The guy behind the counter was impressed with her selection and jealous she was going to the philly show and stated "about time someone is buying that album". Apparently Target was expecting to sell much more.

Here in the Bay Area The Fixer sits at #12 and Just Breathe at #14 on Live 105 (kits) the Big Alt Rock station out here.

Just Breathe is gonna catch on big time...just you wait.
