Astronomy is like religion repellant...mind blowing shit
Horse shit. Astronomy buttresses faith rather well. The order of the universe is astounding. The absolute pinpoint, perfect calibration of gravity, for example, reduces one to speechlessness. Gravity is calibrated in such a precise manner that the slightest movement, in either direction, renders life on earth unsustainable. A gnat's cunthair, so to speak, of movement in one direction and we would be literally crushed. The same slight movement in the other direction and life cannot happen for other reasons i, admittedly, can't fully explain. That as well as many other astronomical truths serves as faith attractant much more than repellant.
the perfect calibration of gravity's pull allowing moons to orbit jupiter condemned a man by order of the catholic church who told the world the earth was the center of the universe.
what else have they told us for centuries?
i should add, astronomy has played a huge role in many religions and civilization's beliefs, not just christianity... the amazing things that happen in the universe aren't adherent to one single religion's belief.

i didn't say it was adherent to particular faith group. i didn't even mention Christianity (though i am of Christian FAITH)
*emphasis on faith as Christianity is a faith and not a religion. The fact that some religify the faith doesn't change that.
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
the burdern of proof as you put it must go as follows (this is not limited to religion):
1) in the event there is no proof to positively identify something's existence, it is up to the person who believes it to exist to prove it (i.e: God)
2) in the event there is proof positive that something exists, it is up to the non-believer to prove it does not. (i.e: gravity)
Since there is NO PROOF that God exists, it's up to the believers to prove it.
The only problem is, the theists feel that they do have proof (the "look around you" argument), and atheists disagree.
It's an endless argument.
We can say "have you seen God?". They can say "have you seen a molecule?". Blah blah blah.
"Endless argument" is correct. There is also no proof that God doesn't exist. Disbelief is still a belief. It is a belief in the opposite. Therefore i don't buy the "burden of proof" B.S.
Personally i don't feel the need to "prove" my faith. i am a thinker, however, and at the end of the day i feel there is more than sufficient EVIDENCE, both scientific and circumstantial, to support my theistic worldview.

I don't believe that puff the magic dragon exists, so you would call that a belief, or just a logical assumption? a disbelief is not a belief. I believe in science, I don't disbelieve in religion.

I'd just like to say that I don't believe you should ever have to prove anything about your faith. I just don't like it when people like Kirk Cameron spew this trash about "you can have your opinion, but it's wrong".
I am agnostic, so I try to respect everyone's opinion on either side of it, as long as they are respectful of everyone else's.

i guess we'll have to.
There is a problem with your analogy, however. i'm not sure there is a single living person on Earth past the ripe old age of 2 that believes that somewhere exists a magical dragon named Puff. On the other hand, a vast majority of the world's population holds some theistic worldview. i am one of them. Now, because i personally feel that my theism is substantiated with evidence, couldn't we say i'm simply making a logical assumption as well, and, therefore, mine is not a belief either? Where is the line between "logical assumption" and "belief".
Again, how are "i don't believe in God" and "i believe there is no God" any different. They are equivalent statements. No?
"If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice..."

What if atheists published a 50 page introduction to the bible?
Why can't Christians let people have their beliefs?
they feel it is their duty to "save" people.
man kirk cameron is such a douche.
i like how it said "due to the number of atheists not being cordial in their responses, all comments have been disabled." lol, they can present their side of things but refuse to allow criticism of their message....how typical...what a joke...
that it is.
Can you actually do that to written work, or did any copyright laws exist when Darwin published his works? Certainly anything in modern times you wouldn't be able to legally publish a person's work in an instance such as this without having permissions and copyrights?
Once a copyright expires, anyone can publish a written work...that is why you see so many versions of classic novels at the book store.....anyone can publish them without permission and without the obligation to pay royalties.

so you want me to show you evidence of something that doesnt exist??? one would imagine an extreme absence of evidence would be enough. but alas believers rely on their faith which requires no evidence.

to me it is just outrageous to believe that any loving god would not want as many believers as possible to join in the "salvation"
it would be very easy for this god to make his presence known....and no I don't believe that "look at all the beautiful flowers" is proof of god. Write something in the sky. Visit me in person.
Then I'll believe. Until then it makes more sense that it's all a myth....stories passed down from generation to generation
that the atheist/agnostic crowd is growing so much now is probably related to better communication and information via the internet

to me, this has to be one of the strongest arguments for the atheist/agnostics. Every single other theory and hypothesis and belief from a time period even as recent as 100 years ago has been debunked, so why would anyone believe a book that was written 2000 years ago?
People had no real understanding or proper perception of their world around them, so it makes sense that back then these stories would have been written. Same as hyroglyphs (sp?).

can a fair chunck of the book that christians worship be proven as wrong? if so that would make your christian based belifs wrong, therefore christianity is wrong. this could be done before we even look at the whole question of is there is, is there not a good.
earth is 6000 years old (i think sience can has proven that it is longer than that)
noahs ark (has been proven wrong all you need to do is find a documenatary on that)

earth is not the center of the universe
we did not descend from adam and eve (big bang is what created the universe, though what was here before that is an unknown)
evolution seems to be a better fitting theory over creationism (my opion on this one)
chrisitianity seems to have bored a lot of its core from other religions (where the people that created to lazy to come up with their own religion or where they infuleneced by other religions)

like the second one, despite its holes. i've been feeling this a lot lately. lot of whining from the right these days... the country saw through the evangelical bullshit of dubya and beck, and now they're whining about how nobody respects their way of life... after decades of them trying to force theirs onto us.
like Kirk Cameron said..."now our children can't even pray in school"....like we've suddenly taken something away from them
children arent considered old enough or mature enough to make up their minds about God. theyre fed it from birth and so it really isnt a choice for them. these babies are baptised(or the equivalent) into a religion that they have no clue about. that they dont even know exists at that stage. and why do they need to??? a child isnt a christian child or a muslim child.. theyre a child of christian parents or a child of muslim parents. its the grown ups telling them what to think.
im quite relieved that my father was educated by the catholic system cause that enabled him to not give a fuck about educating his children about religion. which enabled me at the age of 11 to decide that there was no God. i no longer had to worry about spending all eternity burning in hell... i mean honestly what kind of psychological bullshit is that to lay on a child.
"your" children can still pray in school if they must. theres plenty of time for quiet reflection during the school hours. before school, during recess, during lunchtime. there just shouldnt be a designated time and a congregation of the student body for that to happen.

its a case of they need to brainwash the masses, and to make sure they can reach the impresionable youth. Where else are they going to get their next crop of memebers from. Alas I think their is enough proof to say that the religion that kirk cameron in this case is trying to push is wrong. Therefor he should give up on the fantasy and actually go on living life.

personally with my youngest child im in 2 minds about how to deal with religion. shes 10 and she knows what i think. but she sometimes attends a kids club down at the baptist church. i allow her to go cause she wants to hang out with her friends. she knows i read the bible and she knows what place it holds within my personal cannon. she also quite often hears me make mention that God doesnt exist but she also comes homes with things her friends say. instead of telling her what her friends say is bullshit i ask her questions. i alllow her to search for the logic. in the end i know religion wont 'win' and it is this conviction which allows me give her the freedom to seek for herself.

If I'm not mistaken, I think this is covered in the Bible. It says something about being faithful no matter what, with or without physical proof of his presence. They sure covered all their bases!

to me, this has to be one of the strongest arguments for the atheist/agnostics.
I think the Bible is the greatest fiction ever written.

just because something is great and unimaginable doesn't mean it is evidential that something created it...
then you could believe anything... the mountains are so high and so pretty, a herd of magical billy goats MUST have constructed it.
lots of people believed the earth was flat too.
exactly...they've gained followers by FRIGHTENING them with talk of hell and burning for eternity, etc. which makes absolutely no sense at all.

founds these atricles and I thought firstly you might find one of them funny, and the second one kind of brings up some of the points that have been covered in the past few pages.

can a fair chunck of the book that christians worship be proven as wrong? if so that would make your christian based belifs wrong, therefore christianity is wrong. this could be done before we even look at the whole question of is there is, is there not a good.
earth is 6000 years old (i think sience can has proven that it is longer than that)
noahs ark (has been proven wrong all you need to do is find a documenatary on that)
earth is not flat
earth is not the center of the universe
we did not descend from adam and eve (big bang is what created the universe, though what was here before that is an unknown)
evolution seems to be a better fitting theory over creationism (my opion on this one)
chrisitianity seems to have bored a lot of its core from other religions (where the people that created to lazy to come up with their own religion or where they infuleneced by other religions)
i need to go and find more information to continue this post..

like the second one, despite its holes. i've been feeling this a lot lately. lot of whining from the right these days... the country saw through the evangelical bullshit of dubya and beck, and now they're whining about how nobody respects their way of life... after decades of them trying to force theirs onto us.
like Kirk Cameron said..."now our children can't even pray in school"....like we've suddenly taken something away from them

children arent considered old enough or mature enough to make up their minds about God. theyre fed it from birth and so it really isnt a choice for them. these babies are baptised(or the equivalent) into a religion that they have no clue about. that they dont even know exists at that stage. and why do they need to??? a child isnt a christian child or a muslim child.. theyre a child of christian parents or a child of muslim parents. its the grown ups telling them what to think.
im quite relieved that my father was educated by the catholic system cause that enabled him to not give a fuck about educating his children about religion. which enabled me at the age of 11 to decide that there was no God. i no longer had to worry about spending all eternity burning in hell... i mean honestly what kind of psychological bullshit is that to lay on a child.
