personally with my youngest child im in 2 minds about how to deal with religion. shes 10 and she knows what i think. but she sometimes attends a kids club down at the baptist church. i allow her to go cause she wants to hang out with her friends. she knows i read the bible and she knows what place it holds within my personal cannon. she also quite often hears me make mention that God doesnt exist but she also comes homes with things her friends say. instead of telling her what her friends say is bullshit i ask her questions. i alllow her to search for the logic. in the end i know religion wont 'win' and it is this conviction which allows me give her the freedom to seek for herself.
thats nice to hear that you are letting your children make up their own mind once they are old enough. Which means they will be wise enough to see fact from ficton.

my wife and I are in a bit of a difficult situation...........she's catholic, I'm agnostic. So, before we got married, we had the discussion (MANY times) about what we would do if/when we had kids. I agreed that they could be raised catholic, but with the understanding that they would not be expected to follow it once they have the mature mind to make up their own. As my parents did with me. When I was 12, they just said "ok, you're old enough now, it's now your choice if you want to come to church with us or not". I stayed home that one sunday morning, and haven't looked back.
I don't go to Christmas mass with my wife and her family. I make sure the turkey in her mom's oven isn't burning the house down. In other words, I watch football and have a beer.
I obviously take part in my kids' Christenings and other sacraments, because it's important to my wife (and obviously, if they so choose to remain Catholic, possibly to my kids later on as well).

from what i gather most people dont have a problem with it and its people like kirk cameron and ray whats his face. This kind of people see it as their mission from god to force upon other people what they believe, i still do some of the christian religous things for my mother who still kinda believes in but only out of respect. I would not be the person that I am today without them. But anyway as I have said before I have issues with christians as they are trying to ram their bullshit down of throats, but when you ask them for proof they tend to hide say why cant you respect my beleifs and sometimes act like children.

i should add, astronomy has played a huge role in many religions and civilization's beliefs, not just christianity... the amazing things that happen in the universe aren't adherent to one single religion's belief.
i didn't say it was adherent to particular faith group. i didn't even mention Christianity (though i am of Christian FAITH)
*emphasis on faith as Christianity is a faith and not a religion. The fact that some religify the faith doesn't change that.
can a fair chunck of the book that christians worship be proven as wrong? if so that would make your christian based belifs wrong, therefore christianity is wrong. this could be done before we even look at the whole question of is there is, is there not a good.
earth is 6000 years old (i think sience can has proven that it is longer than that)
noahs ark (has been proven wrong all you need to do is find a documenatary on that)
earth is not flat
earth is not the center of the universe
we did not descend from adam and eve (big bang is what created the universe, though what was here before that is an unknown)
evolution seems to be a better fitting theory over creationism (my opion on this one)
chrisitianity seems to have bored a lot of its core from other religions (where the people that created to lazy to come up with their own religion or where they infuleneced by other religions)
i need to go and find more information to continue this post..
-i don't WORSHIP the Bible, or any other book for that matter.
-The Bible, as far as i'm aware of says nothing about the world being flat or the center of the universe.
-Anthropology suggests we DO all descend from common ancestors and the big bang could have very easily been the handiwork of an intelligent designer. There isn't proof positive or contrary.
Look, believe what you want. Its your business. All i'll say is, before you try to insult someone else's belief, know what the hell you're talking about. That's why i don't really engage in these types of dialogue in this forum anymore. 13 pages now of people ranting about a faith they have absolutely no knowledge or understanding of. Meh.

i might have my religions confused but I thought at some stage that christians did belive the world was flat and that where were the center of the universe. But I do have to agree with you that I dont really know what I am talking about and these 13 pages or so have drifted off topic.
I thought I had made myself clear that I dont really care what your beleifs are unless those said beleifs are being forced upon me. At this point I will begin to ask questions, to seek the truth and if i dont like it then i will seek to make them stop. Perfect example of this is the guy who wrote this intro to origin of the species, all he does is waste 50 pages (including index, apendices) . i didn't say anything about being persecuted. Not once. My only point was that folks here ranting about the foolishness and ills of Christianity know little to less than nothing about the faith. Period. i'm sticking to it. i didn't say i was being persecuted, just that folks don't really understand the faith they are complaining about. No blood, no foul. i just choose not to engage to deeply in such discussions anymore because of that fact.
Also, the way some Christians behave and what Christianity teaches are not, shall we say, always cut from the same cloth. If your problem is with the behavior of some Christians, then say THAT rather than trashing a faith you don't quite comprehend.

i understand the christian faith just fine. i was raised in it, studied it, all my family believes it. my brother holds the exact same beliefs you do... he's all about the bible, not very much into any one organized group. he's been heavily involved in that sort of thing for years now and he and i have sparred many times over this. you may not like what i have to say, but don't try to tell me i only think what i do becos i don't know what i'm talking about. i know damn well what i'm talking about here. and while you seem so incensed about being lumped in with other christians, you're not as different from them as you pretend to be. you still have, at the core, that condescending and self righteous attitude that the only reason we don't believe is becos we don't understand. we can understand exactly what it is you believe and still think it's a crock of shit. i have problems with the behaviors of some christians AND i have problems with the core tenets of the faith/philosophy/mythology of christianity and the bible. they are not mutually exclusive. i know the teachings just fine and they may not be as frightening or offensive as the behavior of some christians, but that doesn't mean they're right just becos others out there are worse.

but your faith in this instance is drawn from the religous doctrine of christianity, therefore your faith and religion are one and the same.

the bible may not have said that the earth was the centre of the universe, but the catholic church condemned Galileo for his heliocentric view of the solar system...
and i think a lot of people believe whatever the catholic church tells them.... like its alright to live in poverty with 12 children raising them with no food on the table and keep having more kids... or that condoms make aids worse (says the pope)...

to play devils advocate here, it's unfair to call the whole post tripe.
pope Benedict did utter the ridiculous statement that 'condoms only aggravate the problem.' i mean c'mon, that from the head of the catholic church? his words influence hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. the catholic church have gotten so out of touch with reality. at least thats how i see it.
perhaps he's already living in 'heaven', and it's only the rest of us who are expected to face reality here on earth.

Doesn't matter!? How does it not matter? To say that Christianity/the Bible teaches that the world is the center of the universe, when it absolutely does not, and support that lame argument by saying the political arm of the Catholic church (the terms Catholic and Christian cannot be used interchangeably, by the way) condemned Galileo for hypothesizing otherwise, when Galileo himself was a Christian, is by definition, absurd.
Doesn't matter? Of course it matters. It renders the whole argument hogwash!

i agree with you here. the bible's pretty vague on the topic. hell, the catholic church has now come out and said creationism has no business being taught as science and there's no reason the two are mutually exclusive. but in any event, you're right that they're not interchangeable.
how's that for me not understanding shit about the christian faith?

I was under the assumption that christian and catholics are basically one in the same with only very slight differences. With the christian faith being born (for lack of a better word) from the catholic faith. This could be related to my lack of understanding of these religions or that I an enlighten enough to see them for what they are.

Meh.
i'd say you need more information.
i might have my religions confused but I thought at some stage that christians did belive the world was flat and that where were the center of the universe.
Though if you can help me become a more enlightend individual then I kindly ask for your help.

BTW. i don't really see what all the hullabulloo is about in regards to the introduction. They didn't change the book. Sounds like it was left perfectly intact.
bull fucking shit. maybe it doesnt apply to you in particular, but you cannot deny that a significant portion of american christian sects believe exactly what the people in here are ranting about. quit acting like you're being persecuted against and misunderstood. you're a rare minority among american christians.

Objection! Counsel is badgering the witness and, quite frankly, is full of shit, your honor.
i didn't say anything about being persecuted.
If your problem is with the behavior of some Christians, then say THAT rather than trashing a faith you don't quite comprehend.
is it we who dont understand this religon, or is it you that does not understand it?

i understand the christian faith just fine. i was raised in it, studied it, all my family believes it. my brother holds the exact same beliefs you do... he's all about the bible, not very much into any one organized group. he's been heavily involved in that sort of thing for years now and he and i have sparred many times over this. you may not like what i have to say, but don't try to tell me i only think what i do becos i don't know what i'm talking about. i know damn well what i'm talking about here. and while you seem so incensed about being lumped in with other christians, you're not as different from them as you pretend to be. you still have, at the core, that condescending and self righteous attitude that the only reason we don't believe is becos we don't understand. we can understand exactly what it is you believe and still think it's a crock of shit. i have problems with the behaviors of some christians AND i have problems with the core tenets of the faith/philosophy/mythology of christianity and the bible. they are not mutually exclusive. i know the teachings just fine and they may not be as frightening or offensive as the behavior of some christians, but that doesn't mean they're right just becos others out there are worse.
but your faith in this instance is drawn from the religous doctrine of christianity, therefore your faith and religion are one and the same.

and i think a lot of people believe whatever the catholic church tells them.... like its alright to live in poverty with 12 children raising them with no food on the table and keep having more kids... or that condoms make aids worse (says the pope)...
First of all you are REALLY reaching here. "Well, uh, yeah, but, um, yeah the Bible says absolutely dick about the earth being the center of the earth, but the political arm of the highly religified catholic church, at the time, condemned Galileo for his views of the solar system, so it really is the same thing, blah, blah,blah..."
Please.
BTW, you do realize, don't you, that Galileo WAS a Christian! Do you think at all before you post this tripe?
to play devils advocate here, it's unfair to call the whole post tripe.
pope Benedict did utter the ridiculous statement that 'condoms only aggravate the problem.' i mean c'mon, that from the head of the catholic church? his words influence hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. the catholic church have gotten so out of touch with reality. at least thats how i see it.
perhaps he's already living in 'heaven', and it's only the rest of us who are expected to face reality here on earth.
it does not matter that galileo's was a christian, he could have been a budist monk for all that it matters. What matters is the fact the the catholic church held these views.

This could be related to my lack of understanding of these religions or that I an enlighten enough to see them for what they are.

at times, different sects of christianity are more different than, say, the catholic church and orthodox judaism.
true but if you look at it they have borrowed a lot from other religions
