You're right. I swear I hear Ed singing in that version of Fixer ... "If I'm out of sooaaaaap ... I just buy some more at Target!"

to be perfectly fair the commercial promotes both Pearl Jam and Target. It does - the Target logos are all over and at the end they make sure you know its only at Target.
If it was just for Pearl Jam it would say 'only at pearljam.com, Target and select independent record stores.'
It's a Target ad promoting Target and Pearl Jam. The Yield commercial promotes Pearl Jam which helps sony's bottom line but isn't promoting the Sony brand itself.
Dude, the worst part is the Target brand mark on the hand at the beginning. Definitely trying to insinuate that that is Ed's hand. Jesus.

I find it a bit amusing when people get all upset because Pearl Jam is 'sleeping with a corporate giant' (i.e. Target).

Do they know what that little Sony/Epic logo is on their copies of 'Ten' and Vs' is?

'zactly
It's Pearl Jam saying 'you can get the album at target with special content'. The bad thing is, that the marketing guy at target is saying 'we just became a lot cooler because PJ was willing tacitly endorse our brand.' The latter is what's shitty.

A label that you signed a contract with in 1991 is one thing. Partnering with a big box retailer that sells albums at discounts because they buy on volume is another (and are pricing other, local retailers out). Particularly when you have stood against such entities in the past.

heh heh, and i'm supposed to care about what a dude with the last name weiner has to say about Pearl Jam?
no thanks

Good to see that you're active on the Pearl Jam boards, kelly curtis.

So you're defending poor, little Wal-Mart now? The little guy always gets screwed!
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
i never gave a flying fuck about their brave stances against whatever, i'm not about to start caring about their supposed selling out now. Ed seemed a little too self righteous at times to me anyway. as long as the music is still good, i'm good.

I didn't see Wal-Mart mentioned anywhere in that post.

Hell no. Wal-mart is the same thing as target. I don't know where you get that shit. I think having target, walmart, kmart...any fucking retailer in your video/commercial is unseemly.
I didn't see Wal-Mart mentioned anywhere in that post.
Obviously, you don't really have an understanding in how this works. Wal-Mart and the other big box retailers are the only people who get screwed by the Target deal.
If you're whining about it, you're basically saying, "I wish I could buy this album at Wal-Mart."

"We fought our way through eight records at Sony and J to get ourselves in a position where we could cut a deal to get paid $5 a record, rather than $1.50 or $2." - Stone
Again I'm not upset about them giving Target the record because they should try to make as much as they can, but I am not going to listen to people saying this was motivated by doing right for us fans or doing something that was not based on a financial reason.

Guy, they are direct competitors at mass retail. If you don't understand that, I don't even know what to say. Target getting a PJ exclusive is a direct result, and attempt to counter, Wal-mart's exclusive deals. This is kind of common knowledge dude.

Right, but if you think Wal-Mart is the same as Target, in terms of corporate greed, etc etc etc ... that's not even close to being true.

What are ya saying? Wal-mart is a big, evil corporation so they get AC/DC and Target isn't so they get Pearl Jam? If they're in direct competition, then they must be pretty similar....like McDonalds and Burger King.

What!??? They battle over the same real estate in developing cities! Wal-mart makes higher level employees sign non-competes when they are hired that stipulate they can't go to Target if they leave, and vice-versa. They are cut-throat in their pursuit of the other's profits. If you think Target wants to make a little less than Wal-mart so they aren't as 'greedy', you are truly naive.

Target has a much better track record in terms of employee benefits and charitable giving, etc etc. But screw it. You're right. Pearl Jam are sellouts. Fuck 'em.
Now can we move on to something else? Please?
Arguing over something that happened like six months ago is really kind of ridiculous.

“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
What was always so cool about this band was that they did things on their own terms, without any real promotion. Especially not by jumping into bed with a huge co. like Target. Why didn't thay use this marketing ploy for No Code, Yield, Binaural, or any other album for that matter? It just put a bad taste in my mouth....
this IS doing things on their own terms, in the context of the music industry of 2009. They couldn't be doing things MORE on their own terms, and that includes doing a commercial with the Target logo in the back.
Nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with it at all. If Eddie was, say, pushing Target brand toilet paper in the commercial, well, that might be a different story altogether, but they are promoting their own product, not the store or the store's product.

Some people are forgetting the fact that the band is WITHOUT a record deal. They needed a way to distribute their music so it could be heard and not everybody has access to pearljam.com or an indy record store. I don't think the commercial is a big deal, its promoting the album not Target. Its not like they are selling Cadillac's or some other shitty product....
Times have changed, as others have said this is not the same band it was 15 years ago and if you still want them to be the same band you're gonna be sadly disappointed.
